OT: 48 years ago yesterday Wichita Lineman was released...

What a song, what a songwriter, and what a musician and voice. One of the great combinations in music history. Will live forever...

Yesiree...no faux bro country there.

Growing up, my next door neighbor was "a lineman for the county". Tough, skinny guy with Popeye arms. After a couple of beers while sitting on his back porch he would start singing that song. It was part of the soundtrack of my kid-dom.

Actually I read Jimmy's FB post wrong. 48 years ago, it peaked at #3 on the charts. So it was obviously released earlier.

Here's the full concert w/ the SD Symphony for those that may want it (Same song, but the others follow):

Great song by Webb and amazing performance by Glen. My favorite by Glen is "Gentle on My Mind", now I feel old! Great guitar player... under appreciated.

Find a girl that looks at you like Crystal Gale looks at Glen around 1:50

I highly recommend the documentary "The Wrecking Crew," about the session musicians behind many of the biggest hits of the 60's and 70's. Glen Campbell was part of that group of incredible musicians prior to breaking out on his own. Here's the trailer:

Edit: It was on Netflix as of a couple of months ago, not sure if it still is...

In the book The Wrecking Crew, there is a very funny story about Glen, as a very young man, playing on Frank Sinatra record.

Jimmy/Glen together doing Wichita for the first time:

Gee. I wonder if it will be any good!?

He played the riff on Strangers in the Night I know...
You know the story? Glen was all charmed up, in his mid 20s, sure that once FS heard his guitar riffs, Glen would be offered a job touring WITH F and his band.

FS was in the booth singing, and Glenn watched his every move. When the song was over, FS was talking with the gun running the studio, and the both looked across the room at Glen. Both were grinning.

Soon as FS left, Glen hustled over. " I saw you guys talking about me. What did Frank say?"

" Frank wanted to know who the fa***t was who was staring him down."

I have heard that. Glen/John Wayne stories are good as well. Part of Glen's act used to be where he'd preface playing True Grit with "I'd never acted in motion pictures before. And every time I see True Grit I think my record stands." In other interviews he talks about how (for one reason or another) Wayne just really liked him and gravitated to him.
