A few weeks ago, I mentioned I was going to England next July to watch the final round of the British Open. (July 19). I arrive on July 11, and have booked hotels for the Open on July 18/19, leave for the States on July 20.

I have July 11-July 18 open, and had asked the Board for information on Iceland....and got some great info.

Now that everyone has given me great information on working out, I plan on being in better shape by then,:D:cool: so now I can consider doing a vacation at a warm weather/resort area, where taking off my shirt will not create angst and trepidation. So, a potential traveling companion has indicated Greece may be an option.

Looking for any information on Greece, taking into account I will have but a few days next July. Obviously, the historic sites are on the "to visit" list, but looking for any resort/beach areas also.

Thanks in advance.

Wife and I did Milos, Athens and Santorini a year ago. (My body woke me up in the middle of the night to stream the glorious 2nd half against ASWP)

Loved it and we will be back. If you are in the market for gorgeous beaches and great service, Santorini might be the best spot in Europe. Very steep, but worth it. If you want more details, my wife has tons of info I could route to you

Go the the islands and avoid too much time in Athens. Santorini is heavily visited but you can rent an historic cave villa in Oia, at the north end and avoid the crowds. Paros, Mykonos, Ios, are other islands to consider. I stayed in Paros and took a small ferry over to Anti-Paros where if you just follow the trail, a short hike will get you to a beautiful beach where your bathing suit won’t be needed. A food truck pulls up to sell sandwiches during the day and an old couple with a donkey comes by selling “grapes and melons”, assuming he wasn’t just commenting on the sunbathers. Watch the film Summer Lovers and you’ll understand what makes Santorini so beautiful. I prefer the smaller islands rather than Rhodes or Crete. Stay in the Cyclades if you can.

2017 family visited Athens, Santorini and Naxos, 3 nites each. Each destination was so very unique, it was like 3 different mini-vacas.
Athens is typical big city, loud, hot and noisy. But no regrets on taking in the historical sites. We stayed close to the acropolis and walked everywhere. Biggest tip I can give, if going up to the Parthenon, do it at opening. As lines get longer and longer as the day goes on. We entered at opening in the morn, made the climb, took lots of pics, etc. As it was first day in Athens, kids bitched about the early start, but on the way down, when they saw the literal mile long line of people looking like death waiting in the sun, I got lots of kudos.....
Santorini was amazing, we stayed in a small village vs the much busier towns of Fira and Oia(the two places with all the pics everywhere). They must be visited, but we enjoyed the solitude after Athens. We did the cliffside up and down walk between the two towns, about 9 miles. Locals thought we were whacked, but another must do.
For beach destination, We were undecided between Naxos and Mikinos(big-time party island), but went with the quieter Naxos. Stayed right on the beach, and for three days never ventured more than about a 1 mile in either direction as there were countless options on eating and drinking.
Lodging is quite salty, but once there were amazed at how reasonable food, drink, tourist attractions were. We took ferries between all destinations.
Be happy to share more info, Enjoy!

I’m going there In December for 4 days. In addition to seeing the Acropolis and other major historical sites in Athens, making a day trip to Corinth and the Cave of Lakes. And planning to take a ferry to Aegina. Also doing a walking tour and cooking class (booked both from Trip Advisor) in Athens.

Let me know how your trip goes...I made need some pointers from YOU.

Go to Santorini and Rhodes.

The Acropolis in Athens is worth seeing but that's about it.

Athens is great if you love history. Walk around the base of the Acropolis and there are little ruins right in the middle of the town. I agree with those who said get there early at opening- it’s cooler and less lines.

There’s a great rocky overlook half way up the trail to the Acropolis that’s a little off the path but gives great views for pics of the family with the Acropolis just above you.

(If you look closely you’ll see people in the clearing in the trees on the left. I think that’s the overlook we used for pics).

Santorini is one of those storybook places that are a must see. Incredible views. Just try to forget you’re standing on a volcano with a collapsed caldera under the bay. ;)

Mykonos is a big party island.

Monasteries at Meteora (might remember from an old James Bond movie)-

Rhodes and Crete have great history as well but they are further away from the mainland.

Greece is a great place to visit. Enjoy the trip.

Definitely do Santorini. Stay in Imerovigli instead of Oia. Way less crowded, we enjoyed sunset views much better from there. You can easily get to Oia as well as the rest of the island.

LOL - I won't get there until July 2020, if it works out - you will go before me if you are planning Dec 2019.
