4-year-old boy swept out to sea while walking with mom

"A 4-year-old boy was swept out to sea when a ferocious wave crashed into him and his mom as they were walking along a North Carolina beach, officials said.

The desperate mother scoured the waters off Kitty Hawk Beach for her son, but when another wave swooped in, she “lost sight of him in the surf,” US Coast Guard officials said in a news release after the Wednesday afternoon incident."

***visits to the OBX are a popular topic on this board; while this sort of thing could possibly happen in many places, the steep nature of the ocean-side beaches and strong rip currents along many sections of the Outer Banks do deserve extra caution.

A very sad story. I understand from an OBX local, the mother had the boy in her arms when the wave hit them.

Yeah. Ruined my day when I read of this, about noon today.
Do like me, pretend this stuff doesn't happen. It like Disney, i am just playing the role of someone who just read a really depressing post. Ok, time to make popcorn!

The Outer Banks are dangerous. My brother-in-law drowned there in 1990. He was 50-ish, in good shape, former airborne and very experienced in the ocean. The currents can be much stronger than in NJ, MD, DE beaches. I know that it does not apply to this situation, but many of the beaches do not have lifeguards. Always respect the power and unpredictability of the ocean currents.
