OT: Americans' Favorite Fast Food Chains

I love Arby's. Too bad the one we had in State College kept getting it's dining room turned into a parking garage by people who couldn't manage that turn driving south on Atherton St. and College Ave. I'm Jonesing for a roast beef sandwich as I write this.
Back in the day, Roy Rogers was the definitive downtown S.C. roast beef sandwich place.

I love Arby's too, but even the clean ones are bad now. The pressed beef seems dry, cold, and sliced too thick.

It's all about the sauce. I guess the reason they won't sell their sauces in supermarkets is because people would stop coming to eat at their restaurants.

I really don't like "fast food" as such. I feel very fortunate to have near me, here in metro Atlanta, a Willy's Mexicana grill. I go there at least a couple times a month to get Saturday lunch for the family. They have great burritos, made fresh to order, your choice of ingredients, nice bag of chips, a salsa bar...can't ask for much more. Can even get a "burrito in a bowl" if you're going Atkins. Perhaps a bit more expensive than "fast food" but well worth it. They also have salads, quesadillas, tacos...all made fresh. Now that's "fast food!"

I once got busy in a Burger King bathroom.

In N Out is overrated, I suspect it's due to the "only available in limited areas" mindset. They finally came to Texas this year, I went a couple times before realizing our local equivalent (P Terry's) is much better.

Signore - you're in Austin, right? What do you think of Freddy's burgers?

Rita's Water Ice - not sure if this qualifies as fast food, but it's good. Also in the ice cream (frozen custard category) Kohr Bros., although they have a limited number of stores. They do the classic orange and vanilla twist cone, also a peanut butter and chocolate twist for a break from the traditional. Even a cafe de leche. Almost anything from Wawa is good, especially hoagies and coffee. They bake their rolls fresh in the store every day, and the secret to a great hoagie is the bread. Also Dunkin Donuts coffee is pretty good, better than Starbucks IMHO. Einstein's Bagels is also pretty good for bagel sandwiches.

I've had Khors in Stone Harbor Nj many times and they are pretty good
I've had In and Out, it was ok. The price was right. Jersey mikes isn't bad, but too many good local delis to go to Mike's. Smash burger makes a great burger and a real good chicken sandwich. Prefer Qdoba and Moes over Chipotle

Bojangles seems to be a Southern thing but, somehow, Reading has one. Best fried chicken. Great fries, biscuits and dirty rice, too. Way better than KFC.

I like Long John Silvers, Arby's, and KFC. I also enjoy really good brew pubs like Elk Creek Cafe and Otto's, though I'd put Otto's a few notches bow Elk Creek both in terms of food and beer. And yes, I did say I like Arby's. I hardly ever eat fast food, but an Arby's roast beast sandwich is da bomb. And who does fish and chips better than the old pirate? And their coleslaw...heaven.

I don't see the Chick-Fil-A attraction. I found their chicken bland and dry. Bojangle's and Popeye's
I consider much better. I think Five Guy's is hands down the best burger chain and I've had
most except In and Out. Subs are best left to Italian delis. Even Publix makes a better sub
than any of the chains mentioned.

chic fil a is king, but the chickenshack at shake shack is damn close.

Best burger? Tough. Haven't seen whataburger which I liked. In and Out is my favorite though.

Not sure if it qualifies as fast food, but I want to give a shout out to Johnny Rockets, a predominantly southern chain that has a nice 50's style to it.

I've never been there. P Terry's is far from my favorite burger, but it's probably my favorite cheap burger and is comparable to In N Out. For a high end burger it's hard to beat Hopdoddy's but it costs $20 for a burger, fries and a beer there.

Whataburger's quality is good and they are better than most of the big chains like McDonald's and Burger King. You probably didn't see it here because it's extremely localized, I'm not sure if they have any locations outside of Texas.

Some of the favorites are obviously regional. I've never heard of Marco's Pizza, Moe's Southwest Grill or Firehouse Subs. I'm guessing that some of you have never had an In-N-Out Burger. (They're pretty good, I'd say.)

It's been a long time but loved TOGO's pastrami sandwiches. Twenty years ago they were to die for. Pastrami or hot roast beef but all the sandwiches were pretty good.

Had that at the airport yesterday. Surprisingly good for airport food. And they make if fresh there too.

My niece works at Moe's in the Cleveland area, but I have not been yet. I'll agree with others about Culvers. And no one has mentioned Tim Horton's yet. It's pretty good food--the only trouble I have run into was inconsistent service. I suspect that's common across the fast food spectrum (excepting Chik-fil-a). They are a sponsor of the Braves' AAA club near my brother. The foul pole has been renamed the Fowl Pole there with a cow climbing it....:D

I think Starbucks is everywhere, and Dunkin Donuts nearly everywhere. I'm wondering if you have Peet's Coffee Stores back East. Peets started in Berkeley, and they have some pretty serious ownage of the high end coffee market here in the Bay Area, and in the LA area as well, I believe. I love Peet's Coffee. Not sure they are operating outside California, though.

Unfortunately, Tim Horton's is not everywhere.

I thought they had the meats.

;)

Firehouse Subs sucks compared even to Jersey Mike's.

As far as fast food chains in general, the best is Chick-Fil-A, and no one else is even close. It isn't only because of the food. It's because they are spotless and the employees are polite and helpful. The food helps as well - pretty damn good.

+100 on the overall quality of Chick-Fil-A, Clean, Courteous and pretty good food.
I don't know who does their hiring and training but EVERY OTHER fast food chain could learn something from them. Looking directly at you Popeyes.

You'd like the town I live in where chains are shunned and independent food places are all the rage. I don't mind it per se but seem to result in restaurants costing more, in my town at least.

Years ago when I was in grad school I want to a professional conference in Chicago. The guy I shared a hotel room with was a guy from Romania that was from the same academic department I was in. So one time it was time to dinner and we went out to eat...in Chicago...and we came across a Wendy's and he wanted to eat there so I did. It really didn't bother me because I like Wendy's and I'm not a big foodie but I was cognizant of the fact that foodies would cringe at going to Chicago and eating at Wendy's.

I was in NYC once in my life, for about two days, and I wanted to see as much as I could so when it came time to eat I just wanted to eat. I didn't care about nice restaurants, I just wanted to get it done with (which resulted in my a few times just getting a hot dog off a street vendor). But anyway, one time I went to eat at McDonald's...in NYC. And the line was so long I went elsewhere.

I did find a small chicken wing chain in NYC named Atomic Wings that I loved. I check it out online now and then and they are slowly expanding but still mostly only in the northeast, where I'm not. I hope to eat there again sometime before I die.

With all the Pizza and Deli shops, virtually every other door, you go to McDonalds? SMH. LOL.

Sometimes you just have to get back to your youth. I crave a crappy Quarter Pounder about twice a year and the fries are still great.

Dunkin Donuts coffee is good as long as you either get it Black or put your own cream and sugar in. I don't know what it is with DD but they put waaayyy tooo much cream and sugar in their coffee. Maybe its a Indian/Pakistani thing? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

BB the problem is, not every place has those Pizza and Deli shops. I would love to go to a good Pizza or Deli shop, but they don't exist around me, so I am left with the chains!! FWIW when I go to Mc Donalds it is to get a soda (pop) and a hamburger for my dog!! He loves them!!

A couple of important distinctions: When we talk about Fast Food, there are different definitions usually defined by entree price points.

The lower tier Fast Food chains are defined by average quality and a fairly low cost menu. These include McD's, BK, Wendys, Arby's... average main entrée item cost < $ 4.00 per item.

The next tier is what the industry terms: Fast Casual https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_casual_restaurant

This is the realm of Chipolte, Shake Shack, Five Guys, etc. Different price point: $5 - $ 10 for main "entrée" item..

As you can see by this discussion, we are comparing apples/oranges. Interesting fact - the $0.99 Cheeseburger on a Dollar value menu costs the restaurant $0.94! The margin on this item is $0.05... this is why the beverage programs (soft drinks / coffee etc) are so important. Interesting fact #2 - typical fast food/c-store coffee... < $0.21 cost of goods (12 oz) - coffee / cup / lid....

For me, there's days when I just need a really quick, cheap burger as I'm heading to an evening meeting.... Mickeys does that.

If you ask for cream at Dunkin, they use Light Cream (18% Butter Fat). Half and Half is 12% BF. Most people like the additional BF and with Dunkin Coffee it does help to cut down on the "sourness" which is a typical of a light roasted coffee...

That Arby's was there when my sister started PSU in '73 and was there when I started in '85. Loved that place along with Roys.

Agree. And here is my issue with many, if not all, Fast Food places and especially Arby's. Stop trying to make everything. Find what you do and make best and stick to that.
Arby's has waaayyy too many different styles of sandwiches and meats.

Agree but the poster I was replying to was in NYC...

I will never ever go to Popeye's again. Maybe its a "city" thing but all of them around here have attitudes out the wazoo, plus the one time I went to the one on the way home from work they said they were out of Chicken. Not its in the fryer or it will be up in a minute but that they didn't have any. WTF its what you do.

Sig, agree with you re: P Terry's. Good breakfast sandwiches, good shakes, very reasonably priced too. Whenever I'm in Austin visiting my brother I hit there and hit Rudy's for BBQ. Know there are loads of upscale places for BBQ but Rudy's is fast and good enough that it satisfies my cravings.

Also a Culver's fan, their pot roast sandwich is pretty awesome. And still can't resist BK's original flame-grilled Whopper. Throw in Wendy's frosties too.

Does anyone remember Gino's? There were none that I knew of in NEPA but I was in one in Ocean City MD in the 70's and was totally blown away when I saw that they basically gave you a bun and beef patties and you could go over to their "fixins" bar and put whatever you wanted on your burger to your hearts delight. Gino's Hamburgers was a fast-food restaurant chain founded in Baltimore, Maryland, by Baltimore Colts defensive end Gino Marchetti and running back Alan Ameche, along with their close friend Louis Fischer, in 1957.
