OT: Another terrible rendition of our anthem*

Everyone wants to be the next Whitney Houston........instead of letting the Anthem be the star.

You would think by now the NFL/ MLB/ NBA etc. would tell them to sing it as it was written instead of butchering it while trying to be 'original'. If that's a problem- find another singer. ;)

I have a SIL who sings it at Pirate and Steelers game. She did a ball game a couple weeks ago. Internationally known mezzo-soprano, so you have to appreciate opera.....

She doesn't do too bad considering that. Not overly dramatic or drawn out. But, she is a true professional.

I don't think there is any pay for it. So, these pop singers do it for the exposure. I agree that many are terrible. No reason to drag the thing out.

The anthem at the All Star game, was so-so, IMHO. But the Canadian anthem was well done. Leo Welsh is a real pro--and perhaps one of the few people to do an anthem at more than one All Star Game in the same calendar year--as he did the Canadian anthem (with a couple of Mounties as backup singer) at the hockey ASG earlier in the year.

Let the stadium do a mass karaoke for the Anthem. Play some background music and encourage everyone to sing. Come on...lets try it! Please stand and gentlemen remove your hats.

Try it again, but with more feeling!!!

It's good Whitney had an musical arranger, a conductor, a full orchestra and was able to PRE-RECORD the national anthem so she could lip sync on live TV. Otherwise, she may have sounded like Ciara, too. It's a tough song. But, add in bad acoustics, no accompaniment, an attempt to "personalize" a well known song and, sheer nerves, it's no wonder we get so many, bad versions.

This one...
is good and was controversial...

Like this one too....

Good job by Marvin. He essentially did it straight. His vocal tones make it uniquely his version, without a lot of variation.

Jose sang a good song... but it's not the National Anthem. Love his ability to add depth and feeling to songs. Save that one for an album, instead of a public event, imo.

Tough song to sing. Everyone knows it and if the crowd is not singing along, everyone is a critic.

Best stadiums are where the fans are invited to join in for the singing of the National Anthem... and they join in.
