Considering a money market with check writing capabilities. I'm an old guy with brick and mortar experience up to this point. Looking at a short term holdings, 2-4 years. I see Citi and some others offering 2% APY. What questions should I be asking ? Is this generally "fool proof" , insert joke ? Help !

Ally Bank has been great for me. Their customer service is very good and they all speak English that you can understand.

Schwab Bank. No fees period. No minimum balance. They reimburse ATM fees so you just get cash out wherever you want, including overseas (no 3% overseas transaction fee that most US banks charge). The site is not beautiful but it works reliably. Bill pay works. Remote check deposit works very well via smartphone. And when I've had issues I've been able to get human beings on the line promptly.

And you automatically get connected with a Schwab investor account so it's relatively easy to move extra money from checking to money market or CDs. And did I mention, no fees for anything. We don't do investing with Schwab but they don't seem to mind and they never bother us with solicitations. Just very impressed with them.

By contrast, we still have a couple of old accounts with PNC and it is just nothing but trouble with those people. Every year, sometimes twice a year, they tweak their rules and send you 4 pages of fine print and then they start charging you some fee you never heard of. Schwab is such a refreshing contrast.

Barclays is easy to use as well. Same 2% rate. We do not write checks through them. After having our info stolen off of a check, we have gone almost exclusively e-commerce. It was a Citizens check. Luckily, we got reimbursed.

Ally keeps dropping their rates. Went from 2% down to a recent 1.7%. I went back to Capitol one at 2%. Checking, savings, and credit cards all available.
