My son and I are planning on being in State College for a few days next week and thought it would be fun to rent some bikes and cruise around town and campus while we're there. From what I can tell, it kind of looks like you can be fined for having an unregistered bike on campus. Maybe that's just for students, but the PSU website isn't very clear on that.

Anyone know if you can hop onto campus with a non-registered bike and cruise around?

I can see if you are a student you would have to have them registered but there are a lot of people in town that ride through
the campus. My buddy and I rode ours from the Shuttle parking lot on Ridge Road to the stadium and locked them up with
the other bikes right in front of the stadium. No one said anything to us.

Edit: I said Ridge Road I meant Rolling Ridge Drive.

Hey CF, checked with my grandson PSU grad & currently graduate student at PSU. He explained that you need to register the bike if you are parking it on campus, similar to having a car park permit. Jobie & friends keep their bikes off campus and ride the designated bike routes.

That's how I read the rules. So if we park our bikes at the HUB to go in to take a leak we could potentially get fined.

I work on campus and ride a bike. I wouldn't worry about registering your bikes for the couple days you're talking about. They don't regularly patrol looking for registration stickers and tend to ticket early in the fall semester if my memory is correct. What they do is leave a warning tag and then come back through a few days later to see if any of the same bikes are still without stickers.

So I'd be very surprised if anyone even looked at your bikes. If they did, they'd probably just leave a warning tag.

NO CF, If you are a student living on or parking the bike at classes you need to register. Visitors do not have to register.

I contacted PSU concerning you & family biking around campus & town. They asked if you are living in Center county?? I told them no, she told me you would not be required to register.

The registration is basically just for contact info and identifying bikes that are stolen or abandoned. Once or twice a year they do a sweep and tag bikes with expired registrations or that show signs of being abandoned (flat tires, etc.). As long as you use a bike rack and don't lock it to railing, street sign, etc. you will be fine.

As for renting, I do know that The Bicycle Shop does rentals:

I don't know if Freeze Thaw or Eddie's offer rentals or not.

I bike on campus often and my bike isn't registered, but I don't park it on campus. I love biking from Blue Course Drive along side of the golf courses. When I get to Atherton, to avoid crossing Atherton on a bike I ride down to the IST building. The portion that crosses overhead of Atherton includes a bike lane.

LOL, I guess they are too busy on Football Saturdays to worry about whether my bike is registered or not. :)
It is a great way to and from the stadium on football games, as long as the weather is good. It probably shaves
at least an hour off how long it usually takes on the shuttle.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Going to spend a day on Spring Creek fly fishing and a day on the bikes just touring around town and gown.

I live in Centre County and have biked to campus many times and chained my bike to bike racks on campus many times. All unregistered (I have several bikes). Never had any issues. To me, the registration is more for scare tactics to get you to register your bike. I have seen many bikes chained to the racks on campus that look like they haven't been ridden for 2 semesters or more. It is more to identify the owner if PSU needs to remove your bike from the campus racks in their annual sweeps. Some racks do get over crowded and it sucks if you cant use it because it's full. The bikes collected in these sweeps usually end up at the PSU Lion Surplus store if they are any good. I even bought one that still had the registration sticker on it for $10 several years ago.

Long story short(too late, I know), don't worry about registering your bike unless you are a student planning to keep it there during the years you attend PSU. Relax, ride, and have fun. There are tons of bike paths in and around campus.

Back in the 90's, I had my friends that came to visit park in the lot on Atherton across from Rec Hall. If they got parking tickets, I'd tell them to throw them away. The University police only have real authority for parking if you're a student. That is, unless they tow. (Or take your bike while unattened)
