just saw Nats are making him available to trade. I’m kind of shocked. Isn’t he a huge name? I’m just a casual fan, but is he playing bad this year?

The Nats aren't competitive this year and his contract is up at the end of the year. He's probably going to ask for the highest contract in MLB history, and they likely can't afford it so they're probably looking for some prospects in return rather than getting nothing when he walks at years end.

He’s a huge name, but he’s having a bad year (batting .220, though the power is still there).

The talent is immense, but he’s missed significant part of 3 of his 7 seasons, and his attitude wears me out at times.

Wouldn’t it be dumb to trade top prospects for a guy that could only be a 2 month rental? I expect him to be a Yankee next year.

They can afford him - Lerners are richest owners in baseball.

It would be dumb IMO. Fortunately for the Nats there are loads of dumb teams. However, there are also teams like the Phils who might think getting an audition will help their odds of signing him.

If they have the money AND he wants to stay there, you would think they would have extended his contract prior to this season. Perhaps they'll trade him then sign him back as a free agent. It's happened before.

Harper would never have been willing to sign before the season since he had all the leverage and really wanted to break the bank in free agency. Then this disastrous season happened

It is a bit shocking. Nats are disappointing this year, but still only 5.5 games back from Philly.

Harper is having a bad season by his standards, but it is not as bad as it looks. He leads the league in walks so his on-base percentage is still decent despite the low batting average.

The Nats should have traded Harper last off season and they would have gotten a treasure trove of talent. Now they are stuck with him, he will leave in free agency and they will get nothing in return.
If he gets the 400M contract many think he will, you have to wonder what that team is thinking. Don't misunderstand, I like Harper - a lot. A team with a short RF porch will have a 40+ HR guy. But IMO he needs to go somewhere that has other stars where he can just be one of many good players. Maybe Boston, LA, the Yankees, Indians, Cubs. A trade of Harper for Stanton might have made sense in the off season but not now that he would be a two month rental.

That's very unlikely. NY has plenty of talented young outfielders. They don't need Harper. If anything, the Yankees may look for a top starter, however, they are pretty rare. Jordan Montgomery has been out all year and will be out about 1/2 of next year. That has really hurt. Next year they may just go with one of their young guys. German and Loaisiga have shown great promise and there are more in the pipeline, such as Sheffield and Adams.

Trust me as an Islanders fan, if the free agent to be hasn’t agreed to a new contract and you are not likely a playoff team you trade the guy and get the most you can for him.
F’in Tavares.
