When last we spoke, my wife and I had harvested about a quarter of the massive tree fungus, sauteed a bunch of it in garlic and butter, and, with some friends, ate it for dinner. Great stuff!

We decided to get the rest this weekend, and found that some interloper had taken over half of what was left! Still there is a hell of a lot of it, and we got it all.

I was told not to wash it with water, just to brush off the tiny bits of bark. You don't wash it because it sucks up water like a sponge.

That gave me the idea to marinate the stuff in red wine, with a little minced garlic.

Sunday we will use the meaty fungus (!) to replace the meat in a huge vat of pasta sauce, and make dinner, plus several dishes to freeze for later. I WILL be on the scout for this stuff from now on.

Thanks for the help from this all knowing board!

I had somebody steal a couple wasp nests from my shrubs in the front yard a few years back when the design stores had the prices up around $150 or so. Sheesh!

Did your son-in-law do his duty and eat the first bite? How long did you wait to assess his reaction to the "chicken?"

Did this stuff grow at the base of a tree? I ask because you said it soaks up water like a sponge, and if it will soak up water, it will presumably soak up other fluids as well. Let's hope no dogs happened by that tree before you harvested this stuff.

All part of the foraging process. Even a French Bear ought to be aware of this.

You need to mount your tree camera to determine your “competition”. Whoever it was will probably be back in the next few days.
