OT: does anyone use Apple Pay?

Apple pay is actually old tech. For 15 yrs I've a little wand on my key chain. At Exxon I just wave the wand in front of the pump, it turns on the pump and bills my cc attached to the wand(not physically but for billing purposes ) works great I love it never had a problem

I like the Apple Pay feature, where your $ charge appears on your phone screen. I see the AMEX charge on my phone before the restaurant server comes backs with the signed invoice. 100% credit card monitoring. Does not work for my bank check card, which is disappointing.

Like it, safe?

I see Starbucks uses it. We go to Starbucks twice a week after work.

Iirc ...

Like that it only records the transaction number for a specific purchase.

So, if someone hacks into your retailer's database, all they get are transaction codes, which can only be used for one purchase, which you already used. So, hackers can't get your personal credit card info.

Plus, you have more privacy at the retail transaction level. Your iPhone recognizes you via your fingerprint and allows your transaction. Others can't use your Apple Pay. You don't have to show anyone your card, with your name. CC number, security code, etc. So, there is less chance someone can steal your identity and card info.

Any comments or updates are welcome...

I used it I used it yesterday at trader joes. It's great! More places are taking it now. It's as safe if not safer than any other way to pay. Can't wait till I never have to take my wallet.

The only problem with it is that cashiers rarely know how to ring you up when you use it. I used to use Google Wallet whenever I had an Android device and the clerk never knew what it is or how to take my payment. I always had to explain what it was, what I was doing, and I usually had to help walk them through pushing the right button on the register to accept it. This isn't even mentioning the fact that every time you use it they start asking you all kinds of questions about it because it's pretty cool. You start to get tired of explaining how it works and how cool it is after about the 4th-5th time.

Honestly, I just stopped using it after a while because it was more hassle than it it was worth even though I think it would be really convenient if it was widely used and clerks new how to use it, too. I have an iPhone 6 now but I've only tried to use it once and even though the store had a POS system capable of processing the transaction with Apple Play they had it blocked.

A lot of merchant services like Visa and Mastercard are trying to get their own services like this into stores and they make deals with retail chains which means that while they develop their own service like this they can't accept these payments through Apple Pay. It's why Google Wallet was also blocked on all Verizon Wireless phones that ran Android, because Verizon was developing their service they wanted on all of their cell phones. You had to root your phone and install Google Wallet as a .apk manually because you couldn't do it from the Android Store.

It's safe. I am kind of in the business.

The problem with Apple Pay is changing consumer habits. Its still just as easy to whip out the card as it is to pull out your phone. Hence, people continue to do what they've always done. Couple of things coming that may change that:

  • Starbucks is a perfect example....you can put your starbucks frequent flier card in Apple Passport, or whatever, and do the transaction and freq flier card at the same time. Convenient. Same is true with Subway and several other freq flier cards.
  • Apple Watch is nice because you don't have to pull out the phone. you can just bring up the card on your watch. Not huge but helpful.
  • Companies are working with states to image drivers licenses. Once done, you will no longer need to bring a wallet. You'll just use your phone as a "mobile wallet."
It will be a slow climb but eventually "apple pay" or similar will be the standard.

I don't use it, mainly because I have a few months left before I can upgrade my iPhone. I don't think we're quite there yet with this kind of tech being the norm. It's not a wallet replacement.

I'm actually leaning toward using one of the so-called bridging products, like Plastc. A credit card with an e-Ink screen (like a Kindle) and you can load all of your cards onto that. Then you only have to carry one card. I think it's a pretty cool product.

I've slimmed my wallet, made by Dash, down to my Amex, Mastercard (if a place won't take Amex), debit card, driver's license, and health insurance card. Everything else I load into an app -- I'm using Stocard. It's gone so well that I'm not sure if I'll do Plastc or not.
