In your opinion what time is the earliest someone should be out doing yard work with loud equipment on a Saturday morning in a residential neighborhood?

6:00 AM! If you are concerned about waking your neighbors, you will have to cater to the lowest common denominator (you know, the guy with the newspaper in the driveway at noon). So, either get on with your day or allow the biggest slug on the block dictate your entire Saturday's activities. Anything in the middle is a compromise between your personal taste and your neighbors!

We must be neighbors. Somebody in our neighborhood had a tree service mulching at 7:00 am. Normally I wouldn't care but with a one-year old who rarely sleeps it was quite annoying.

Sorry, but that is just rude. 6 am is absurd. There are plenty of good people who are not " the lowest common denominator" that would like to sleep past 6am.

I don't do anything loud before 8 at the earliest, but that's just me being courteous. Most people simply don't give a damn.

I do the quiet work early and machines don't get used prior to 8am. Having said that, I live in Dallas where it can get very hot during the summer, so I don't take it personally when people try to take advantage of the "cool" morning hours.

I cut over 10 lawns in my neighborhood once a week (split them across the week) - ditto my brothers (and we would help each other out regarding scheduling, etc...). We always used the rule of thumb of 8am and if we were going to try and work earlier, we'd always check with the owner to make sure they didn't have a problem with it (and usually we would do "gardening-related" items that didn't make a lot of noise first). I believe this all falls under the category of the fundamental Western Ethic of "The Golden Rule" - e.g., treat others the same way you would want to be treated.....e.g., "consideration".

BTW, this same "rule" was taught to me by my parents regarding calling a friend's household by phone.....e.g., you really shouldn't call someone before 8am or after 9pm unless it is a real emergency or they are "expecting your call". I've had kids texting my kids well into the wee-hours of the morning to the point where their parents had to be told it was "unacceptable" and they needed to get control of their kids or not give their kids a phone (e.g., parents are responsible for the things their kids do with phones when they purchase and pay for the phone in question).....this was "news" to some parents which blows my mind - effectively, their attitude was that their kids are "entitled" to act however the he!! they please and they are not bound by the rules of mutual-consideration implied by "The Golden Rule" (e.g., they lack "culture" or in the words of the "Ship of Fools" they have a "culture problem"....go figure!).

imo you cant tell a commercial guy what time they can start, most people are just happy they show up at all!!! So telling them to wait or come back you may never see them again

I was building a fence a few years and my neighbor complained about the noise at 2.00 in the afternoon because that's when he daughter took a nap. You can't please everyone so do what your conscious tells you. I would not use power equipment before 8:00, except special situations.

Call your local police and see what the ordinance is. Most communities have rules for this.

Simply not true - most municipalities have "City Noise Ordinances" that these "Commercial Services" (e.g., contractors) are bound by and they know the rules. They can be fined in most communities for violating these ordinances.

Wow, 6am and 7am seems a tad early to me to disturb neighbors, many who have kids. I would never run any loud equipment before 9. So if your neighbor does loud work at 6am, I guess it's okay for you to go out and do loud work at 2am. Some people are morning people and some are night owls. I'm not sure one is any better than the other.

9am on weekends, 8am during the work week. I have a one year old and she's always up before or around 8, so we're up anyway. But, as a courtesy to others, I wait until 9am on weekends so folks can sleep in or whatever if they want.

I live on a very quiet residential street. With my windows open one spring Saturday morning about 6:00 AM my neighbor was wrestling with an aluminum ladder against his home for some time. The banging and clanging echoed through the neighborhood. It woke me and pulling on my pants I walked over and asked him to cease and desist. It was after a Friday night Happy Hour, too. Anyway, I general wait until 9:00 AM before mowing or snow blowing, but would not be opposed to a neighbor starting at 8:00 AM. And, I like rise by 6:30 AM but may be up anywhere from 5:30 AM to 6:30 AM.

Just as a story, my neighborhood (whole county I believe) has a 7 AM start all week. About 6 months ago, a 20 or so story building was imploded on a Saturday, about 2 miles, as the crow flies, from where I live. Although I knew it was happening, you never want to be woken up by a loud explosion at 7:02 AM on a Saturday.

Not before 10am. I'm apparently the 'lowest common denominator' and like to sleep in on weekends. You have all day- no need to be waking the neighborhood at 7am or 8am (you rat bastards know who you are). ;)

There are ordinances, most of which apply to residential neighborhoods.

Being a landscape contractor, I won't start equipment until 7:30a at a residence. For commercial properties, I'm on site before the sun comes up.

When I'm at home, I mow at 7am. That's so I can hurry up and do what I have to do before my neighbor wakes up and starts following me around. Even if I do wake him up, by the time he gets dressed and maneuvers his way to the bottom floor and out the garage door (he's handicapped), I'm already done and back inside before he can get to me.

I have very few residential customers strictly because of the hassle. Even if the customer is cool, the neighbors may not be.

You certainly came to right place to seek advice in etiquette. I'm going with 9:00.

Yes. Plenty of it on display in the post which shall not be named. I think I'll bump it again later.

My neighbors better have a good reason to be mowing before 8am. I'd say its definitely asshole territory to be runni g power equipment before 8am on a weekend.

8am but I would not do it before 10am. Some towns also have ordinances on the books.

Here's one thing to remember before complaining about one day where you couldn't sleep in. Just be glad your neighbor is actually doing work on their house/property.

Ever live next to someone who did nothing with their yard, including cutting the grass?

I'd be willing to get up a little early if it meant not having to look at this.

It's not an either/ or. I'd rather sleep in and have the neighbor properly take care of his lawn at noon. ;).

I don't get people who buy nice homes like in your picture and then don't take care of them or clutter their places with junk. Have 2 'hoarders' in the neighborhood just down the street from each other who have so much junk in their garages and driveways that their 8 cars (total) need to be parked on the street. The worst is a house on the corner right at an intersection on the main road into the neighborhood which makes 2 opposing cars unable to drive down the street on their respective sides of the road. Causes such a mess and lots of near accidents (vision impaired from jungle yard until you turn and 2 cars are suddenly nose to nose) but they don't see a problem spilling their property into the street. ;)
