In the past I have layered the firearms in Rigs grease including the barrel. Let them sit in silicone gun socks for 5 years and then clean and reapply grease. No regrets.

I have since bought Eezox and Brownells Rust Prevent 2 and Renaissance wax.

Btw- I will say the Renaissance wax has been awesome on my knife collection and leather collectables. After talking to "people" I treated my Pennsylvania long guns with it. Figures crossed.

Cleaning a greased gun is a pia, and am looking for something easier to apply and remove. What do you guys use?

I don’t have a collection that needs this kind of attention. I just have working guns and clean before and after use.

Renaissance Wax is great. One caution: like all waxes it will build up. Before re-applying, you should remove the old coat. Easy to do with Dawn Platinum. If you don't want to do this every time, eventually you'll need something like lighter fluid.

I was told 10-12 years of protection with Ren wax at 30-45 relative humidity. At 5-9 years wipe with mineral spirits and reapply. I have only used Ren wax on 4 long rifles as an experiment. The rest get a very very light coating of 0-30w on the iron every three years.

Sounds like a reasonable regimen to follow. Definitely not overdoing it. Ren Wax produces such good results on metal, that some folks think more is better.
