How do you like the area? I'm thinking about possibly taking a position there. It seems like only one area has a decent school district, but that isn't much different than where I am now. Any pros and cons would be great.

TIA

It's a "land-locked" island. You go 5 minutes in either direction, you are in Southern Georgia. When I lived there, I had an expression I told all my friends back in PA. "In Tallahassee, ALL CONVERSATION LEAD TO FSU FOOTBALL"

Weather wise, it's an arm-pit...rarely do you get wind. The Summer months can be excruciatingly humid.

Hot, young women aged 18-25. All immature, btw.

I would never live there again. If you are a Southerner that BLEEDS Garnet and Gold, it's a dream. Anyone else, you will hate it. St George Island is two hours away (beach).

Let me know if you have specific questions.

Heat and humidity I already know all about living in NOLA 15 of the last 20 years. Summers suck, winters are great and I get that. I don't care about the bar room conversations or how the co-eds behave to be honest. I'm looking for someone who has raised a family there in terms of the schools and things to do for families. It seems like the nicer area in terms of raising a family is southeast of downtown.

One word...Killearn.

That's where upper suburbia lives. IMO, stay away from South Tallahassee (regardless of what Aerosmith says) heading toward Crawfordville or Wakulla. Again, if you are a Southerner, you may prefer that than Killearn.

If I had wife, kids...it would be Killearn. That's in the Northern part, btw.

Heading East is Monticello. I think Ted Tuner still has a home there. Nice, but very Southern and local. Some live there and commute to Tally.

West, you are heading to Marianna. Not much there.

IMO, your safest bet is buying in Killearn. As far as schools are concerned, Killearn has the money, so those school districts are better. There was a school, John Paul II, IIRC, that opened around the time I was leaving that was getting rave reviews. Leon High School is the oldest, but antiquated.

Did you know Tallahassee was the only Southern Capital never seized in the Civil War? If not, you'll hear all about it from the locals. Don't forget to participate in their Civil War reenactment every year.

I felt stale, there.

The southeast area is growing (Southwood is designed to be a village onto itself) but a lot of people live in the northeast (Killearn). To me, Killearn is a bit too far out of town. I have lived in Tallahassee for twenty years now and have enjoyed living here. While I don't have children, my friends who do, speak highly of the schools. Being a college town, there is a lot going on. FSU has very good programs in theater and music, so there are plays, concerts and even a vibrant opera scene. Recently completed Cascades Park downtown has a nice amphitheater for concerts as well. We have ACC basketball and a college baseball team that usually contends for the College World Series. Nearby St Marks refuge provides great hiking and bird watching, as does Wakulla Springs (complete with manatees and alligators). The white sands and emerald waters of St George Island (peaceful and relaxing) is only 1.5 hours away and Panama City Beach (more active) is 2 hours away (just don't go during Spring Break). I think Tallahassee is a great place to live. If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Oh, I forgot to add that there is also an active Penn State alumni association which gathers to watch the football games at a local sports bar.

One litttle known fact that might be of interest for your family. FSU actually has a circus that is run as a student organization, the Flying High Circus. They do some touring as well as some performances in their circus tent near the stadium. They have a summer camp program for kids.

If you're gonna visit, definitely July/August. So, you can experience the daily shower and intense humidity afterwards (reminder, NO WIND). For a small town, traffic sucks. And, that's during the summer and worsens in the Fall.

If you can handle July/August weather, then maybe you will be fine.

Peace!

No different from where I'm at. If you don't like humidity, you're on the wrong coast.

Plenty of pros and cons. The pros all play for Florida State football and otherwise you'll essentially be surrounded by cons; some ex-...some not so ex-.
