would be my top 10 also. pretty interesting to note that 2 of the top 3 are located about as far from the center of the country as possible, and the top 7 are all situated well away from the core cities (virginia at 7 is the lone exception... but once you get outside the dc rush, it's a pretty nice place to be). as for the bottom feeders... no surprise there.... and i LOVED seeing california at 44.

I wonder what the criteria was?
For me take away LA/Hollywood and CA is awesome.
San Fran is a little too congested for me but once you get out side of it its beautiful and San Diego alone should
put CA in the top 25. LOL.
I'd also move AZ, NM and UT up higher but I love the SW.
MD is getting dragged down by Baltimore and PG and Montgomery counties but again once you get to
the Eastern Shore or Western MD its a really nice state.
I like VA but I'd move CO above it. (and not for the obvious reasons but it helps).

Most Rutgers fans live in 2 states, New Jersey and the state of denial. :)

New jersy will forever hold that spot. It's just become a running joke around the country that it's ingrained into people's thoughts. Shows like 'Jersey Shore' and behavior of Rutgers fans don't help the rep. ;)

I'd like to know the criteria as well. If $ was no object, Manhattan puts New York in the my Top 3. And California at 44 is a joke. Political bent aside, California has anything and everything. And I'm with BBrown - the SW is gorgeous. Nevada at 40 is laughable.

Oh well. I'm sure these publications put these lists out there just to irritate people and drum up hits.

I recently caught a lot of flack for calling NJ the worst state in the country. I think it's time for an apology!

Illinois is sure getting little to no love. Having Chicago alone should put it above Michigan with Detroit IMO. Not sure how Indiana ranks ahead of Illinois either ? That said, if you didn't live near or close to Chicago then I understand Illinois being rated near the bottom.

South Carolina above CA and NY. Too funny.

This is just a poll about what people think. Southerners (and ultraconservatives) loathe NY and CA because they are progressive and too elitist/liberal/open-minded. So, people are taught to hate those States.

NJ has a bad rap. Talk to people about Philly who have never been there, and they will say disparaging things, too. Why? Because that's what they've read/heard.

I grew up in Jersey. Trust me, it deserves the bad rap, particularly the people.

It's a two way street...elitists on the coast hate fly over country..it's filled with inbred rednecks, ya know.

Like every place NJ has its good and bad parts. My wife and I live in NJ in a part where there are beautiful farms, wide open spaces, beautiful homes and absolutely 0 stereotypical guidos like you see on the Jersey Shore(actually nearly the entire cast is from Long Island). It gets tough being totally defined by some ignorant or downtrodden people/place. It's like when penn state shows up in "worst fans" polls. A lot of. Penn Staters live and thrive in NJ and its become a majore feeder state for our top level recruits that we cheer for. Sort of wish it got a little less attention on this board, but what can you do? I hate rutgers as much as anyone else and not one student from my NJ high school class went there.

Have to say the LIST is really "piss poor". But I do not know who was asked and what the questions were? Actually, many of the "top" listed states have no population ! I wonder why, since they are so great, no one lives there? Wyoming ?????????? After shooting some animals it's time to "shoot yourself in the face" from BOREDOM !!!! But, to be fair, IF you ask the 12-13 people that actually live in Wyoming, they might be happy :)

ha! If NJ is so bad why is it one of the richest states in the union withsome of the highest property values in the nation? Hmmmm

Northern NJ is an extension of NYC, that's why.

Kinda like Northern VA (which has a few of the richest counties in all the US) is an extension of DC.

I have to agree on NJ being pretty decent. The "biggest" problem for NJ is the lack of identity. North Jersey = suburb of NY and South Jersey = suburb of Phila. Tons of PSU grads North and South.

Philly and New Jersey are awesome. How in the world could anybody vote on this with any objectivity. You would have had to visit every state and multiple cities in that state. Crazy. My brother drove through South Carolina once and told me it was like a third world country in spots. He has been all over and SC is ranked higher than Jersey. No way.

While I agree Detroit is a dump, just having a big city doesn't make a state great. Given the choice to visit Indiana, Michigan and Illinois, I would pick Indiana first, and Michigan second. But that is purely based on the breweries in those states. IMO, there is really nothing I ever need to go back to Illinois for.

Love southern NJ - have a condo in WIldwood Crest - North Jersey and South Jersey are very different just like the East, West and the Central part of PA. I do love SoCal though and California should be much higher on the list.

I would expect this sort of opinion from someone who wants to play Pitt. I grew up in the Philly area, and have been to 49 states, and nearly every major city in the country. Jersey is easily my least favorite state, and I don't have any love for Philly.

I'd be happy to trade being ranked a consistent No. 50 for some friggin' rain.

Somerset and Hunterdon counties in NJ are ranked 3rd and 4rd wealthiest counties in the country. The mid region of NJ is considered a wealth belt. It's a beautiful area and jobs are plentiful. However other sections of NJ are awful and deserve criticism . But don't dump all of NJ into one category.

I suspect the rankings might be rated on a "Which state(s) do you hate the most?" question. Not many people have a reason to hate states like Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Maine, etc; ergo, they don't get many dislikes. NJ and some others at/near the bottom have reputations, deserved or not, as does Hawaii at the top. I lived in Hawaii for nearly six years, and it would not be in my top ten states.

oh it's you again. I guess you went to all the cities and all those states also. you're wrong as you always are. you're wasting my time. again any reasonable human being would know that there could never be an objective way to vote on this. but that would be expecting you to be reasonable. now you got your shot in on me like you wanted to do so I guess its on now. you just couldn't leave sleeping dogs lie. now in your world somebody that wants to play pitt is wrong about everything and you are right about everything because you don't want to play them. stop being such a reactionary to other people's opinion.

I'm voting for South Dakota.

What exactly has SD contributed to this country, and more importantly, what have they done for me?

Why this list is full of crap:

You can't get anymore America then New Jersey. It is America good, bad or otherwise. New Jersey is real and here is why...

Frank Sinatra
Count Basie
Joe Pesci
Robert Deniro
John Trovalta
Danny Devito
The Edison Electric Company ( the real company ).
Biographical Studios ( which created Hollywood, CA )
AT&T
The Strip Mall
Barbie
The Honeymooners
The Twilight Zone
Atlantic City and the Flying Horse off Steel Pier
The Jersey Pine Barrens ( where, if you lucky, you get to die ! )
Cherry Hill the home of the world's best Pizza
Stone Harbour ( where I lost my virginity ) This has value, so f off
Cape May and Avalon ( cooler by a mile )
Hurricane Carter
Campbell's soup and the Jersey Tomatoes

Surf and Turf ( with a Pittsburgh Steak )
The Clam Tavern and the Mussels Marinara

RCA
Wildwood ( Childwood ) in the summer of 1976 listening to the Boss

And this just off the top of my head...

Uh... can't you read. I clearly said I "have been to 49 states, and nearly every major city in the country". Why would you ask a question I already answered? Probably for the same reason you can't seem to type a sentence that isn't riddled with grammar/punctuation errors. (Here's something I learned in 1st grade, new sentences start with a capital letter) See, I don't have to take shots, you shoot yourself in the foot.

You ASSUME again that I am wrong, despite having a much broader experience base. Surely the place you happen to live just happens to be the best in not only the country, but the world! That surely makes sense! Actually in my world, someone with a naïve view on one topic, that isn't supported by nearly anyone else, most likely has a naïve view on other topics. But you wouldn't understand such a simple concept.

You're wasting your own time trying to keep up, so don't yell at me. Your posts never add any value.

Whoever ranked Wyoming number three hasn't spent much time there. It has Grand Teton and Yellowstone but most of the state is dry, featureless prairie and the weather is awful. For whatever reason it is very windy up there and especially bad in the winter. The wind can blow a constant 20+ mph for days. There is a reason nobody lives there.

I am dictating these posts so don't worry about whether I have a capital letter in there or not. you did it again cause you're just a wise guy who runs from the argument and has to use straw man tactics to prove that you are smarter than everybody else. you started it and I could care less what you think about me not having a capital letter where it should be or not. you have been everywhere like Johnny Cash and I could care less because it doesn't make you any more of an authority than me because nobody can be everywhere. so Mr man of the world get it through your head I don't care what you think you bring nothing to the table that I have not seen before from wise guys. you jumped on my case on this thread so you'll have to eat what you have to eat now. I am not going to take you as an authority on anything because your judgement is almost always off base. I say almost always because even you probably can't get everything wrong. now keep up your pompous attitude instead of learning how to articulate your position. you are always focused on the wrong stuff. anybody that makes a statement like everybody in a certain fan base are bad people is not a reasonable person and is not a critical thinker. you don't reach the criteria on either of those important skills. also I don't assume you are wrong I know you are wrong. there is no way there could be an objective poll because even you couldn't cover enough ground for it to be objective. and also because you are non credible due to your outrageous statements claiming every pitt fan is bad or even the majority of the fans are bad. those statements make you not credible or to be taken seriously on any issue.

SEPATOPTEN, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Kids these days can't even type their own damn message board posts. What kind of crappy device are you using that can't capitalize letters, spell correctly, or use proper punctuation?

Anyway, enough of your distractions. New Jersey SUCKS, and apparently a lot of people agree with me.

Having lived in Hawaii for a year, and being a Haole, Hawaii would be my CLEAR #50. The most dangerous place I have been in the world outside of a war zone.

I am using a Samsung galaxy 5 and I don't care whether I'm capitalizing or not. you're obsessed with it buddy. keep making noise. I guess you haven't noticed that plenty of people have agreed with me also about New Jersey. save me your Elmer Gantry act. it's another one of your Straw man tactics to get off topic. you ain't playing with a little kid here son. I've said what I had to say wiseguy. all of this because I had a different opinion than you. isn't that a shame. maybe we could make this a rap where we insult each other and whoever has the better rhyme wins. oh god help us all and please take mercy on my soul. PLEASE. I like Jersey you don't. what's the big deal? grow up and show some maturity. and for gods sake stop the strawman tactics. it exposes you. now make sure you complain about my capitalizing again. your just another complainer.
