OT: Going to Reading Terminal tommorrow...

Hershel's Deli has good brisket, pastrami, fresh made rye bread and usual Jewish Deli fare.

-Bassett's ice cream
-Cannoli
-fresh hot pretzel
-sausage from Harry Ochs
someone usually plays the piano, and pretty well
And maybe drop a few pennies in the pig at the food court

I think you are referring to Martin's sausage. Ochs has been gone since Harry died and the Terminal and Nick Ochs had a major disagreement over terms of lease.

Termini brothers bakery for cannolis.

The older women who work there used to be the most miserable people on the planet. Used to go to the terminal nearly everyday for lunch and do my weekend shopping on Friday there. A co-worker and I decided to split one of the Termini strawberry shortcake rolls they used to have.

Asked the woman if she could slice in half and put into two boxes - she said no.

Asked her why and she said we might not like the way she cut it and she couldn't have a cut one.

Told her we would cut it, she said no.

Asked her for two boxes so we could cut it back in our office, she said no.

That was just one story. They were miserable.

Who has the best Roast Pork Sandwich? DiNic's?
What else do you guys recommend?
Thanks.
Reading the short article linked below, I posted my first two tough choices of the 10 listed. I am HUNGRY.

Prosciutto hoagie
Carmen’s Famous Italian Hoagies
Hoagies are a Philly favorite, but when you combine one with fresh prosciutto and a choice of mozzarella or provolone cheese, it becomes that much better. Served on a famous Amoroso's roll with fresh veggies and a pickle, this one was an easy choice to kick off the list.

Original rotisserie wings
Dienner’s Bar-B-Q Chicken
On any given day, the line at Dienner’s can be about a half-hour long, but once you get your hands on their rotisserie wings -- some of the city's most tender and flavorful -- you'll know why. The only thing you won't know is whether or not to order 'em by the pound... which you can totally do, by the way.

Everyone talks about DiNick's roast pork... it was voted the best sandwich in America. Once I tried the pastrami sandwich at Herchel's Deli (right next to DiNick's), I can never go to Reading Terminal without having Herchel's pastrami sandwich and a chocloate egg cream. I have even discussed plans with people to go there and we get one pastrami and one roast pork and two of us would split to get half of each... nevertheless, I still end up choosing a full pastrami sandwich from Herchel's. I guess if you don't like pastrami, or prefer the more complex balance of the roast pork and broccoli raab in your sandwhich, maybe you would mix it up or choose otherwise. For me, the pastrami is just so wonderful, and paired with good rye bread and mustard so as to accentuate the pastrami and not compete for top billing. Thinking about it makes me want to jump in the car and head to Philly!

By the way, don't get the pastrami sandwhich to go and eat it hours later. Even if you reheat with love (saute with a dash of H2O, as opposed to a microwave), it just isn't the same juicy, tender delight that it is soon after it is served.

I was going to mention the wings. I used to go to the Amish place that was right next to Dienner's which is also great. The Apple Dumpling turnover at the Amish place was another item worthy of mention too. I loved Dienners and so did most of the Philly PD as well. They were always there for the 1 lb lunch special.

Termini Bros cannolis are legit. They also have other very good baked goods--I had a fig bar the last time I was there; it was out of this world.

Flying Monkey's cake is disgusting shit, but their other baked goods are fantastic. Highly recommend the cookie dough brownie, anything smore's related, and butter cake. FM makes their own graham crackers and marshmallow, by the way.

Basset's Ice Cream is very good. It's a worthy Creamery rival.

DiNic's pork with peppers/broccoli rabe is a must.

Beiler's Donuts are way overrated.

There's also a good place near the seating area that serves all things turkey--including full Thanksgiving dinner-style things. Love that place too.

Many thanks. That is a great idea and what we are going to do.
And the Egg Cream sounds great.

Lots of good ones here.
Dinics is my favorite sandwich
Hershels pastrami sandwich, close 2nd. Get it with a fried egg on it.
Pearls oyster sliders
Meltkraft grilled cheese...yes grilled cheese
Original Turkey stuffin cranberry sandwich
Termini brothers Cannolli
4th street cookie

2 that I actually found to be overrated...
Beilers donuts
Dienners bbq

I like to go with 3 or 4 other people and split everything so you get to try more.
I mean face it....you eat the Dinics sandwich, you're not gonna have room for pastrami

go hit that area around Christmas time

we take the train into the City
take the kids to see light show at Macys, the animated show at Comcast Center, grab a bite at the Terminal ... good time

Herschels for a grilled corn beef with cole slaw and Russian. Rye bread.
The Pennsylvania store for chocolate dipped pretzels etc for the ride home.
If you do go to Dinicks the spinach is better than the broccoli rabe. Sharp provolone is a must.
I eat at Both Herschels and Dinnicks about once a month.
A cup of coffee from Old City coffee is great too.

No cannoli for you!

This is sage advice. I've tried it twice. As great as it is at Hershels, when you get it home it's like you got it from a different restaurant for some reason. It's not bad, but Not worth taking home

Already posted by others: Pearls for raw oysters, DiNics roast pork, Termini Bros. cannoli and sfogliatelle with an espresso! Oh course, for me post open heart, I can only do one of those at a time spaced out by a year apart.

Dutch Eating Place for breakfast, then forget the donuts and get the apple pie at Beilers Bakery. My father in law says its the best.
We also stop at both Downtown Cheese or Valley Shepard for some aged cheeses.

Across from DiNic's is Hershels. Best breakfast cpsandwich around. Any of the slow roasted meats with egg and cheese on a biali with LTO.

The owner played football for Temple back in the 79s and had been recruited by Joe. Great guy, fond of Wayne Hardin, Joe as well. They opened the stand as a tribute to an uncle who owns a deli in NYC and is a holcaust survivor. All the kids that work there are friendly and the Brisket, turkey, pastrami and corned beef are to die for.

I also live DiNic's, who doesn't. Slam some sandwiches, Bassett makes great ice cream and the selection of meats, cheeses and everything else there is spectacular. Enjoy.

Well, BBrown, how did it go? I'm obviously living vicariously, here.

LOL. On my way back to bmore.
@Ranger Dan was absolutely correct my buddy and I split the pork w/greens and provolone cheese. It was excellent, then we went next door and split a pastrami. I went traditional with Russian dressing and cole slaw. It too was awesome. I think my favorite is whichever one I was eating at the time.
It was a zoo though and really crowded. One thing about the shops though. The workers are incredibly efficient and polite.
Afterwards we walked around the historkic district. A beautiful day to be in Philly.
