The State of Paranoia
I'm planning on getting a new grill this season and since it seems others have posted numerous other household recommendation threads I'd give it a whirl myself.

Last night I found out that there was a recall on the Stok Island grill I've used for the past 6 years (over 600 incidents of the regulator leaking and catching fire) and the wife won't allow it to be used again. Looking for something average size, propane, and hoping to spend not much more than $600 - but beyond that I've no knowledge of best brands or things to look for or into. Not looking to smoke meats, but would like to get into grilling vegetables more often. If my thoughts on price are out of whack let me know b/c I haven't shopped for a grill in years.

My Char Broil has been serving me well for 10 yrs. go to the website and build what you need in your budget.

Get something w/ some griddle flexibility. Griddled burgers > grilled burgers. Great for sliced rib eye and breakfast too.

How often do you grill? Will the grill sit out in the weather? How many people do you typically serve when grilling?

Keep in mind that grilled vegetables take up a large surface area when cooking so you'll probably need a grill larger than you think.

I just grilled a bunch of asparagus this morning for omelettes! Yum!

If you have natural gas available at your house, consider getting a natural gas one. All you need to do is hire a plumber or hvac person to run a line and you'll never have to deal with propane tanks again. You might even be able to get a conversion kit for your current grill and eliminate your current problem since all of the potentially leaking innards get replaced. Also, I like to keep a 2nd charcoal grill nearby for those special occasions.

Only grill with charcoal now that it is just me and Mrs. Fac left in the house. Have a Weber Genisis gas grill that I keep out of the elements and it looks fantastic for being 15 years old. This was great when grilling for the family when I didn't have as much time. The charcoal chimney sure made grilling with charcoal great and with out lighter fluid.

I just bought another Weber Summit. My old one was 10 years old and working perfectly fine. I’m fact, I sold it for $700, half of the original retail! I simply wanted the new features.

I leave my grill outside in the harsh Minnesota winters (as I type this, we are in the middle of a snowstorm) without any problems.

I buy all of my electronics and appliances from ABT in Chicago. Great customer service, reliable, free shipping and no sales tax if you live outside of Illinois. I ordered the 470 propane. They knocked $150 off the price for me. Tell them “your buddy” got that deal recently with ABT and they’ll give it to you.

This is THE grill to buy. Pricy, but they last and have significant resale value. You won’t regret it.

I SECOND the price and service of ABT.

My parents started going there in 1963 and I can’t begin to list all the stuff I’ve bought there over the years. But two years ago it was a four piece Samsung package for the kitchen and last year a new Samsung washer and gas drier.

They are competitive price wise because of the volume of business they do. And they earn their repeat business because of their Customer Service.

The latest Consumer Reports has a huge section on grills that might be of help to you.

I'm a big Weber fan. They price protect their products so the big box isn't going to save you much if at all...maybe $20 or so. But Ace, as ClarkstonMark mentioned, assembles and delivers. They carried my grill around the back of my house and placed it on the patio right where I wanted it placed, and then fired it up to be sure everything was working fine. I hit the guys with a tip.

My suggestions are Weber, Weber, and Weber.

Genesis is the floor, and Summit is better if you have the cash. Spirit is a no-go because they are not made to the same standards of quality.

If you go for the Genesis, spring the extra few bucks for stainless steel grates.

The Weber I bought 24 years ago is just as good as it was the day I bought it. About seven years ago I replaced the grates, but that was only because I wanted cast iron. I think I have replaced the igniter twice. There wasn't anything wrong with the old grates, in fact they are hanging on a nail on the garage wall in case I decide I do not like the cast iron ones, which is not very likely.

When I want the charcoal flavor I use a park style grill that I mounted on a roll around cart, and I use charcoal, not the briquettes.

Both my grills are stored in the garage and rolled out when I need them. I clean them after each use.

I ascribe to the principle that big and fancy with all the bells and whistles isn't necessarily better. Define what you want it to do and then buy the best quality that accomplishes that. Buying cheap gives you a momentary satisfaction and the problems do not appear until later, however buying quality provides a satisfaction of confidence every time you use the product.

Weber Spirit or Genesis, get the cast iron grate. Excellent for fish, veggies and all meats.

After reading posts about this for several years here on this subject, took everyone's advice and got a Weber Genesis E-330 two years ago. They were all right. Even cooking, great searing all on porcelain coated cast iron grates.

I don't even think you get momentary satisfaction buying a cheap grill. Trying to cook a steak, chicken, or burgers on a grill that doesn't get hot enough and is totally inconsistent depending on where you put the meat is not satisfying at all, just frustrating.
I get that not everyone can spend $500+ on a gas grill, and 80+% of America probably grills on a sub $200 Walmart grill, I just don't know how they do it.

Good point.

My Genesis’ lid is heavier than most whole CharBroil grills.

Raised this question 3 years ago. Wanted to be in the $500 range. On recommendations, bought a Broil King at Lowes. Had the features I wanted. No regrets. $400 delivered, set up and haul away the old one.

Weber is the way to go. A bit pricey, but it cooks like no other grill I have ever owned. Last grill I had, a Sears gas grill that was still going strong after 16 years out in the elements (under a quality cover) but needed to have the burner element replaced. The new universal replacement parts had a different diameter fitting and would not work with the old grill parts.

Another case of planned obsolescence as the previous time universal replacement parts that were used they fit perfectly. No OEM parts or replacements are available, so out went the $160 Sears grill and in came the 10X more expensive Weber. After 4 years of use, it was well worth it and I hope never to have to ever replace it. With Weber, I don’t ever expect to have problems getting the right replacement parts if needed, unless the company is bought out and they change things.

I am looking for a new grill, too. Checked out Weber per this board's recommendation and came across this. Portable Nat Gas grill? Sounds like a good idea but it seems perplexing. I've got a Nat Gas outlet that's unused. I'd like to use it, but how does the connect/disconnect work with a portable grill? BTW, this seems like a darn good price...

Gas line should be near the grill, and then just get a flexible gas hose to connect the two.

Weber Genesis is a bit more, but you won’t be asking this question again for a long time.

Weber Genesis ain’t what they used to be... sprang for an E330 a few years back and it’s not nearly as well made as the bulletproof Genesis Silver C it replaced... looks sexier, but performance is merely adequate compared to the old unit... Weber covers are shitty now compared to the heavyweight units from a decade+ ago... Me thinks me know what’s going on here #screwtheconsumer #brandequity

I had mine for 7 years and it was still incredible. Maybe they aren’t as good now?
