OT: I guess you can file this one under "Actions Have Consequences" (Little League)...

If an arbitrary punishment, I would think it's a bit much. If a clear violation of rules with a set punishment, no issue for me.

No problem with this at all. Hopefully they learned a lesson that actions have consequences, especially on social media. Hopefully their embarrassed parents have some additional consequences when the get home.

File under, not my kid, the offending coach knew up-front that they were going to do this. It was an in your face, how do you like me now. They didn't like the host teams tactics in the field and reacted win a disgraceful way.

Now if they all did "hands up don't shoot" they'd probably automatically be awarded the championship

The Atlee Junior League softball team was removed from the World Series championship game on Saturday after posting an inappropriate photo on social media.

The photo in question was taken moments after Atlee defeated Kirkland American in the semifinals on Friday.

Here’s a look.

“After discovering a recent inappropriate social media post involving members of Atlee Little League’s Junior League Softball tournament team, the Little League® International Tournament Committee has removed the Southeast Region from the 2017 Junior League Softball World Series for violation of Little League’s policies regarding unsportsmanlike conduct, inappropriate use of social media, and the high standard that Little League International holds for all its participants.”

As a result of the disqualification, Kirkland American was given Atlee’s spot in the championship game.

Atlee manager Scott Currie was clear in stating that the photo reflected poor sportsmanship, but wasn’t convinced the post was enough to “justify the disqualification.”

“Somebody got a hold of it. I guess they ran it through to Williamsport,” Currie said. “Williamsport decided to disqualify us.”

Coach Chris Mardigian added that the photo was in response to the treatment Atlee players received from members of the Kirkland American team during their visit. Kirkland serves as the host city for the tournament.

That may explain his team’s actions, but it doesn’t justify them. It’s a truly unfortunate way for a team’s memorable journey to end. But it’s also a good lesson on the importance of making good decisions and acting responsibly at all times.
Unfortunate situation that is well grounded in Little League rules. However I am troubled by the selection of a cheating team who likely is the source of notification to Williamsport to take their place. Better solution is disqualify and give byes moving forward.

I agree with their disqualification. I made mistakes as a kid (nothing serious) and when I did, I paid a price. No one tried to explain it away. No one said "kids will be kids". I learned lessons I never forgot. Hopefully these girls learned one here.
I agree. Actions have consequences......accomplishments have rewards. When did this turn upside down?

bottom line: the cheaters snitched and won, even though they lost on the field

great lesson for our country

Not sure how you got so off track here. The sign stealing was dealt with w/ suspensions for the player and the coach the following game (which they obviously lost).

If you think LLBB is ok w/ kids flipping the bird in their uniforms in the dugout, then you don't know much about LLBB.

The sign stealing is irrelevant.

I have no problem with them being booted from the tournament. It is a great chance for them to learn an important lesson about the danger of social media without lifelong negative consequences.
I agree. But letting the other team replace them? No.

There's some coaches who carefully scan other teams for rules violations and then turn them in if their team loses. I know of a couple of state championships in Ohio overturned because of very minor violations(one girl had a very small amount of lace showing--no joke). The coach who reported her got his girl moved up a spot.

a game should not be forfeited for actions after the fact

has nothing to do with LLBB. has everything to do with the world we live in.

for some reason, people are ok with the cheaters advancing as long as they ratted out the other team after the fact

We did the same kind of stuff when we were young but we didn't have social media, camera phones, and video cameras everywhere to record everything. Put everything we did when we were younger on social media and let's see how respectful we look. Kids do stupid things...it's in their nature and it's not a new phenomenon...it's been that way for years and years.
Yes and no. Kids need to be hyper aware of social media and what it really means to post things for anyone to see.

Sure, when we were kids, we did the same stupid stuff. But we didn't get called out on it because we didn't do it for the local news media to report on. The girls taking this picture and posting it on social media is akin to your team of yesteryear winning the league championship and posing for a picture for the local paper with your middle fingers up. Would you guys have done that? Of course not. And if you did, don't you think there might be repercussions? Of course there would be.

Heck, even if you would have done that for the local newspaper photographer years ago, it wouldn't have seen the light of day because responsible people acted as editors (i.e.- filters). People have no filters anymore.

Bottom line, that picture does not represent the values of Little League. If they were to go on to win the entire LLWS Championship, that photo would be attached to them. It wouldn't go away. LL did the right thing.

Which is why I suggested that the offending players be tossed from the next game or the tourney. Has no bearing on the outcome of the (previous) game. If their team cannot field the requisite number in the semi, then the semi-final opponent wins by forfeit and moves to the final.

terrible lesson to teach our kids

Actually, it s a valuable lesson they should learn early - regarding both personal and group behavior and the subsequent public notification of that behavior. Actions have consequences. They were informed of the rules in advance and still chose to act as they did. That was their action, and this is their consequence.

A terrible lesson to teach kids would be to have been to do nothing at all.

This. Fortunately there was no social media or cell phones in my youth. I have a PSU buddy who likes to tell his kids and anyone who will listen how responsible we were compared to today's youth. Somehow he forgot his stoner days sleeping til noon and missing all his morning classes on a regular basis

It is a great lesson - be better than the gutter dwellers. 90% of the time, who gets the unsportsmanlike conduct flag in a football game? The one who retaliated. All these girls needed to do is smile and walk away...their "revenge" should've been to advance at the other team's expense. Instead, by emulating the cheaters, they get booted. I agree with the posts that both teams should be out, but make no mistake, they're both on equal ground and one didn't have to be.

What is this world coming to? Was it appropriate? No. Was it good sportsmanship? No. Was it worthy of disqualification? Of course not. They won on the field. They're kids who got caught up in the moment. It was a teaching moment for sure for their coaches and parents, but disqualification is over the top.

I'm sure the snowflakes who lost to them feel better. To some, including the snowflakes, that's all that matters. Total bullshit.
What is this world coming to? Why are you protecting the snowflakes? Why shouldn't the snowflakes be disqualified for breaking little league rules? Are you afraid the snowflakes will have their feelings hurt now that they are disqualified?

As a parent if your kid did that to say my kid.
And my kid came over and punched your kid in their smug face and beat her ass. Would you say "hey you deserve it for being a cu-t" or whine and layer up?

It sucks when everything has to be policed by an "authority" because people aren't allowed to handle it themselves.

You are worse than the kids.

in the context of a singular action, perhaps

in the broader picture of what actually happened, horrible lesson.

like I said, lie cheat and snitch, you advance. I don't want every team to follow the Patriot way of doing things

How am I crying little punk based on the example I gave?

I don't have kids i was using it as an example.

I just assumed they were all WVU fans supporting their team. Seriously though...it's just stupid young girls giving a screw you to the other team. I guess I just can't get too upset over kids doing dumb things.

What about kids who have scholarship offers pulled because of social media? They earned the offer on the field right? Limiting things to 'on the field' sort of marginalizes the spirit of good sportsmanship.

Stupid is as stupid does. post the wrong thing and you are GONE whether it be in school, work or life.
