In what ways have you changed over time that you would have never imagined?

This came to me today because I used to love to read the Sunday newspaper sports section at breakfast. I looked forward to it. A nice breakfast, a cup of coffee and the Sunday sports section. Now, I don't even get a Sunday paper or a newspaper at all even though I easily and still could.

Another would be not caring about the Pittsburgh Pirates. I grew up a diehard-Pirates fan. I despise Nutting so much that if it took the Pirates to go winless for five consective seasons to get him to sell the team, I'd take it.

A third way would be my following the NFL and the Steelers. I used to watch both games on Sundays and the Monday Night game and never miss a Steelers game. Now, I can take it or leave it and don't miss it at all if I didn't watch it.

And lastly, my love of all things Penn State. With how the Board of Trustees threw Joe under the bus so that their shenanigans and shady dealings would go unnoticed, my love for all things Penn State has dissipated.

I would have never imagined any of those things.

Bottled water sales.
Internet, both the good and bad elements.
Cell phones.
Digital pictures, then really the obsolescence of stand alone cameras.
Hi-def large screen tvs.
High performance cars with ungodly horsepower and yet great mpg
Electric cars.
The loss of Cassettes, CD's and the digitalization of music.
The current cost of college.
Air travel service quality like a meat packing service.
People paying $5 or more for a coffee.
The Stones still touring.
3 years or so of pre-school before actually starting Kindergarten
The size and speed of the current pro athletes.
-Really the loss of kids playing more than one sport. No neighborhood pick up games. The amount of money parents spend on travel sports team.

Just of few of the things to come to mind .

There are other changes in my life that I wouldn't have thought, but with respect to your comments on sports, I'm pretty much with you. Regarding the University, except for the athletics, my feelings border on detest. On second thought, scratch that. It's something even worse, I've become indifferent.

I can empathize with your lost interest in the Pirates. For me, I've lost interest in baseball. Over time, free agency had a major impact on my interest and the changes in the game. I supplanted baseball with hockey. Hockey is so much more exciting to watch on tv. I do, however, enjoy going to a baseball game, having my 2 dogs and a brew. On a warm summer evening, it doesn't get any better.

People get more cynical as they get older... myself included.
What I have noticed is that I have less tolerance for stupidity and less willingness to learn from idiots.
I'm trying to change both. And yes, some of that was sarcastic but the point remains.

Regarding PSU, that cynicism remains. For me the decline started when Joe hung on too long. The passion started to fade when I'd watch us rotate Bolden and McGloin. It was so obvious, to me, that Bolden was not going to be the guy and yet we kept starting him.
Then there were the games where the team was just plain awful.

Of course, Joe held on until it was too late. Like most people who do that, it ended badly. I am furious with the University for their treatment of him, hence the Rally For Resignations which myself and four others created.

The University? Well I created a scholarship in my parents name. I also started another program.
The scholarship, I get letters each year from the recipient. Some are so downright awful I'm shocked. One year a woman, who received the money, blabbed on and on about how she was doing her sixth year at PSU so she could learn more. The fact that my scholarship money was wasted on a student who should have graduated two years prior was infuriating.
This years letter, it was quite good... and my parents called me to say they felt the same. So maybe things are getting better.

OK... so yes, I rant more as I get older too...

Since you asked...

When I was a young man I thought I had unlimited time. Time to learn, time to explore, time to love, time to forgive...a whole lifetime of time. Then, one day I woke up, and I was sixty, and I realized the hourglass of my life was running out. So much time has passed without my notice. So much time had been wasted. And so, I resolved to change. I would waste no more time. Sadly, while I have much improved, I still waste far too much of each passing day. I must always remember the words of John Greenleaf Whittier... "For all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these, 'It might have been'."

I was young and liberal and thought the world revolves around me and my generation. As I approach 70, I am far less liberal and recognize that I am just a pimple on the universe and while my generation caused monimental changes in our society, only a small percentage was for the good.

Great question.

Stopped drinking (never an issue, but it no longer works as advertised) stopped smoking but mostly I stopped caring about things I can't change. All this has led me to being a man who enjoys every day with my family and their kids. If anyone would had told me as a child that I'd be living like I am (I'm comfortable, not rich) I wouldn't have believed it. When I tell my family I don't want anything for Christmas or a birthday I really mean it. I'm truly blessed!

I'm a lot more patient about the crap that doesn't matter (traffic, slow service at a restaurant, etc. )

I mostly avoid the news when I used to be a news junkie. I still like football, but losing no longer makes me nuts and winning doesn't change my outlook on the day.

I like people less, and dogs more- and I never liked people much to begin with.

My view of American Society has dramatically changed.

When I was younger I did not understand how people could become Branch Davidians. I can now see how it happens. 2018 was a shocking year for me in this regard.

Wish I could say this observation is limited to a political party, to those without formal education, or to those of a certain economic status.

Good question.

I used to be a Yankee fan and a baseball fan. I knew all the players on all the teams. Now I'm just a Yankee fan.

I used to live and die with the NY Rangers. Of course there were only 6 teams. Now I don't even pay attention to hockey.

Young body --- now old body with a new fake knee and slightly broken back.

Worst change of all, when I was young I would want to get to the mountain to catch first chair and race to catch last chair. Now it's effort to get to the mountain even though I know I'm never sorry to be there. Brain now says (remembers) one thing and the body doesn't always agree. One thing that hasn't changed is I still love the bluebird days.

In conclusion: Getting old sucks!

I used to be a dyed-in-the-wool Republican. Have become more liberal as I've gotten older and don't identify with any political party.

No longer practice any religion. Don't have a problem with religion, just prefer my own brand of spirituality.

I'm trying to change both.

Have you considered testing your resolve to change on the test board? :)

For the first time since probably around 1980 or 81, I didn't attend a PSU football game all season. Would have a few times, which is to say I had the opportunity but I blew it off due to bad weather. There was a time that wouldn't have stopped me one iota. Not that important to me anymore. Definitely not sitting in the rain or the cold.

Got fat. Used to run a lot recreationally which took care of that. Still do occasionally but not enough and I hate walking, although I force myself to do some. I like the waist/age ratio mentioned above so I'm still good there.

Took a volunteer job that paid nothing, and took a job that pays next to nothing simply because it's fun and I like doing it. When and if I get tired of it, will quit without any hesitation or some misguided sense of obligation. No longer care to be a card-carrying member of clubs or organizations.

Very interesting read so far.

One thing for sure is eating out even occasionally at expensive restaurants. I see no utility in spending gobs of money for food that I can do just as well in many cases at home. Previously, I tried to keep up with and go to many of the new hot spots. No more.

I like driving more in general but I’ll avoid participating in events and gatherings if I know I have to sit in traffic getting there and coming back. As such, I despise going to center city Philly after going there everyday for 30 years plus.

I used to like debating or arguing more I guess, I now view it as a waste of energy since you rarely change opinion or get desired results.

Sports related, I don’t like the never ending reviews of plays but the inability to review certain other plays. So, in some cases you want to ensure you get it right, but in other cases you don’t care?

I read much more and talk much less.

I don’t give a crap about politics....just whoever is in charge preserve the democracy until I’m dead.

There’s only faith, family and happiness, nothing else really matters.

I don’t yell anymore....ever. Mostly ever.

One thing I will always look back on with much fondness - The Penn State toss sweep.

If we are a society of made up (closed) minds (as I am seeing), then what is the course for the democracy, or will we even have a democracy? I struggle with the idea of happiness in isolation, i.e., being unable to share or change the views of those around you.

To me it seems brainwashing is alive and well. All it takes is a seed set in a certain direction that is consistent with an ingrained bias, then it can spiral out of control. That's what characterized some things I witnessed during 2018, hence the Branch Davidian comment. And what troubles me is that I cannot walk away from those with the closed minds. They surround me in friends, family, and community.
