And if he doesn't?If Tucker wins out, wins the Big Ten title and gets to the playoffs he will have done more in three years as a head coach that James Franklin has done in 11.

I will say this for anyone knowledgeable about horse racing - a contract of this magnitude based on the little data we've seen has the potential to be like college football's version of the Green Monkey (RIP).At least one of the guys said to be footing the bill for this is a billionaire, former basketball walk-on, and gave $32 million to Spartan athletics when his company went public. Not sure about how wealthy the other is, but it doesn't sound like this would come out of MSU athletic revenue. If they have the money and can do it, more power to them.
Yup re one of the joys of college football: ya don't what the next season brings. And if he doesn't?
Isn't that the joy of every seasonal sport?Yup re one of the joys of college football: ya don't what the next season brings.

Good timing on Tucker's part. He's about to go 0-2.I agree. This is a ridiculous contract from MSU. Tucker’s record-
College:
2019 Colorado- 5-7
2020 Michigan St- 2-5
2021 Michigan St- 9-1
Total- 16-13
He got $5.5 million annually for 6 years at MSU (double his Colorado contract and apparently over $1 million more than Dantonio was paid by MSU). That’s after a 5-7 year at Colorado.
1.5 years into his $5.5 million 6 year deal MSU has now upped it to $9.5 million per year for 10 years.
Clearly MSU was worried a higher program like LSU was going to take him away and they panicked.
And speaking of horse racing: one job most of us would not want:I will say this for anyone knowledgeable about horse racing - a contract of this magnitude based on the little data we've seen has the potential to be like college football's version of the Green Monkey (RIP).
May happen.Good timing on Tucker's part. He's about to go 0-2.
My belief coaches salaries would appear as a topic of discussion here on this board based on the (Detroit) freep.com article, and say, subsequent ESPN articles.Isn't that the joy of every seasonal sport?
A question for you though - what is the purpose of posting Mel Tucker rumors on a PSU board this week?
If Tucker wins out, wins the Big Ten title and gets to the playoffs he will have done more in three years as a head coach that James Franklin has done in 11.
But I thought I read that Franklin wanted to be the first A-A HC to win a natty. How you gonna win a natty if your goal isn't to get to the playoffs? Would be quite the thing if Tucker achieved that milestone first.Penn State's goal isn't to get to the playoffs.
I feel like there is a bubble coming in college sports. the money being thrown around is rising like crazy, NIL is here, etc..and only so much there. At a certain point things are going to burst.
Where are we at as a society when the football coach makes 65x more than the average college professor who teaches 99.99% of the students. Just seems like we are misplacing some important things here.
Hmm interesting, is this a new wave of coaching contracts. School can give the head coach a 5 year contract at a million a year and then can get a wealthy donor to give the coach 10 million a year on their own?At least one of the guys said to be footing the bill for this is a billionaire, former basketball walk-on, and gave $32 million to Spartan athletics when his company went public. Not sure about how wealthy the other is, but it doesn't sound like this would come out of MSU athletic revenue. If they have the money and can do it, more power to them.
A large university like MSU has many esteemed PhD's, doctors, scientists etc. in their employment. Doesn't it strike you as odd that far and away the highest paid employee is the football coach? Probably followed by the basketball coach. MSU is not alone, it is that way at every major university.Kudos to Coach Tucker.

Sorry, thought you'd get my drift. We don't want to just be in the playoff - we're Penn State. We expect to win the thing if we get in. At least that's how it used to be.But I thought I read that Franklin wanted to be the first A-A HC to win a natty. How you gonna win a natty if your goal isn't to get to the playoffs? Would be quite the thing if Tucker achieved that milestone first.
I'm assuming you're talking about the horses? That doesn't sound fun.And speaking of horse racing: one job most of us would not want:
being a pee tester.
One of my surfer acquaintances here on the coast happens to do that when Del Mar is running. They just held the Breeders Cup at Del Mar., so there he was.
I didn't get into the intricacies of his job, yet good to have that info available, and other track info at the ready should I want it.🤔😉

Great point. I love hearing when people in academia and public education start talking about how much they value education. Follow the money.I feel like there is a bubble coming in college sports. the money being thrown around is rising like crazy, NIL is here, etc..and only so much there. At a certain point things are going to burst.

Yes and no re odd. Yes re we are not alone.A large university like MSU has many esteemed PhD's, doctors, scientists etc. in their employment. Yea re the ponies.I'm assuming you're talking about the horses? That doesn't sound fun.
Anyway, for those who don't follow it, the Green Monkey was a horse that ran a really fast time while up for sale as a 2-year-old. That sparked a bidding war between a Sheikh and some Irishmen. The Irishmen finally "won" with a bid of $16 million. The Green Monkey took a while to make it to the races, then raced 3 times, never finishing higher than 3rd.
At least you're consistent, I'll give you that.If Tucker wins out, wins the Big Ten title and gets to the playoffs he will have done more in three years as a head coach that James Franklin has done in 11.
When did Franklin say the play offs or national championships were not his goals. But I thought I read that Franklin wanted to be the first A-A HC to win a natty. How you gonna win a natty if your goal isn't to get to the playoffs? Would be quite the thing if Tucker achieved that milestone first.
Your response is hard to follow. I was merely pointing out that coaches salaries today show what we really value. No, MSU is by no means alone in that regard. BTW, I sat next to Mel Tucker at a baseball game once. Talked to him for about 2 hours. Nice guy.Yes and no re odd. Yes re we are not alone.
Pick a school: everyone wants a winner. And am sure those who can afford to give so much money, have run it buy their CPA's/tax accountants, as back whenever,
Read somewhere where in the EU, in one country, their favorite sport was Tax Avoidance. 😉
And I also believe when one makes it big via an IPO, they've other charities with which they $hare, and yet don't receive the publicity.

Problem is there’s a mini bubble in university academia too. Most big professors aren’t teaching students. They dole that out to lowly teaching assistants. . You’re right though- sports has become too disproportionate at many universities.I feel like there is a bubble coming in college sports. the money being thrown around is rising like crazy, NIL is here, etc..and only so much there. At a certain point things are going to burst.

Bottom line: contractual agreement is what the market agrees apon/ will bare.Your response is hard to follow. I was merely pointing out that coaches salaries today show what we really value. No, MSU is by no means alone in that regard. BTW, I sat next to Mel Tucker at a baseball game once. Talked to him for about 2 hours. Nice guy.

Really you forget the Big Ten championship Franklin won.If Tucker wins out, wins the Big Ten title and gets to the playoffs he will have done more in three years as a head coach that James Franklin has done in 11.

Let's not count the eggs before they're hatched. Meat is ranked ahead of Sparty despite losing to them!! Now that alone should tell you something. If not, then go back to sleep. Sparty must beat Ahiya and PSU, and Ahiya beat Meat in order for Sparty to get into the Big Ten Championship game. Then of course, Sparty must win the conference title game. That's a long row to hoe for an upstart coach with a team which consists of mercenaries.
Regarding the contract extension all I know is Michigan State is not on the list (see below) and therefore, it has very little margin for error in regards to sustainability. Unlike PSU. I say good luck to them. They're going to need it!
The highest-grossing football programs in college football are...
In college football, like in life, money doesn't solve every problem -- but it does give you a head start. FootballScoop has obtained financial data for everyfootballscoop.com
I hear ya but Tucker is at $9.5 million/ year right after Saban at $9.75 million/ year. He’s now the second highest paid coach in the country and his career record is 16-13.Hate to tell you that looks a lot like what we have seen at PSU. We have up CJF's contract after just about every double digit win season.
I see the 10 million dollar coach is getting his doors blown off. Heading toward the worst loss in MSU history?
The portal team. He can’t do that year in, year out, which is why I was surprised to see such a ridiculously high contract come his way. Guy hasn’t proved he can recruit and build a team and he’s going to be the highest paid FBS coach?!Yeah, talk about falling back to earth with a thud. To think that just a couple weeks ago he was the flavor of the week. The world bowed before his brilliance...though his head coaching record was strictly mediocre before this year at Michigan State.
May happen.I see the 10 million dollar coach is getting his doors blown off. Heading toward the worst loss in MSU history?
So predictable. They should have let him go to LSU.I see the 10 million dollar coach is getting his doors blown off. Heading toward the worst loss in MSU history?
