The centerpiece of Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Park in Lake Ronkonkoma has been smashed to pieces by vandals.

A photo shared on Facebook shows the black granite stone broken into numerous pieces at the park located on Lake Shore Road. Suffolk County Police say a report was filed Thursday. No arrests have been made.

"The Fourth Precinct is assigned to the case," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said in a statement Thursday night. "We encourage anyone who may have information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. A Crime Stoppers fast cash reward of $2,500 has been made available."

Murphy, a Navy SEAL from Patchogue, was killed in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings in 2005 at the age of 29. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in protecting his comrades.

Can someone explain LJ’s tweet? He’s offering a cash reward to whoever desecrated the monument? Did I read that correctly? Nevermind. I see in the thread on Twitter it’s a cash reward to whoever finds out who the culprits are.

I imagine the reverse. Cash award to someone turning in the perpetrator.

Odds are this is the work of dumbass teenagers with zero perspective on who or what type of person Murphy was in life as opposed to someone with truly disrespectful intentions. The true memorials to Murphy's Service can likely never be tarnished. They currently patrol The Pacific Ocean, stand resolute in Calverton National, and live in the hearts and minds of his friends and family. The best punishment besides payment to replace the stone, would be to educate the perpetrator(s) on who he was and the true price of his sacrifice. A learning experience could carry more long term weight than community service/short term jail time.

Yes agree. Most likely some kids who are just vandals. Probably not a lot of thought went into smashing this monument with the pole or pipe they had in their hand.

Shameful. You just make a new monument, bigger and better (and vandal-proof).

LT Mike Murphy is still an American hero. And the vandals are still assbags.

If they catch them, they need to spend a stretch in the State jug. No free outs. They need to be permanently disabused of the idea that they can pull stuff like this. Having their parents pay a fine for them won't get it done.

14 year old kid arrested for vandalism. No motive was given.
The motive was asshole in the first degree.

The problem is, what do you do with a little creep like this? You can't jail him. You fine his ass, the parents pay, and the only thing the kid learns is that his actions have no consequences.

He'll be doing armed robberies at gas stations soon enough.

Shame LJ acknowledged the mistake in offering the reward to the perp.

I guess I gave LJ too much credit. I thought there was a certain genius to convincing the perp to walk himself up to your door asking for his reward....”yup, I’m the guy that did that!” CRACK!!!

Have him (assume it was a him) post on Facebook what he did and let social media do its thing.

I'd have him meet one on one with Murphy's Immediate family. Let them explain in detail who he was, the cost he paid, and the effect it had on those left behind. Just throwing a 14 year old kid who did something stupid into a juvenile center for an act of minor vandalism is simply going to harden the kid and set him on a road toward an institutionalized mind set.

I like the idea of a few months of Saturday's spent working in The VA or with a veteran's agency of some type that another poster mentioned. There's an opportunity to correct behavior moving forward instead of heavy handed punishment that fosters resentment.

He's fourteen years old. Yes, old enough to know better but many people, me included, have done mean and stupid things and have grown to recognize them as such. If he's as bad to the bone as might be feared we'll find out soon enough but now is not the time to get heavy handed.

Force him to watch Pitt football games

(Don't lie - I know a lot of you were thinking it).
I did think of that, but I am a Constitutional follower, including the 8th Amendment

The Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution states: “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”

"Cruel" would be forced to watch Pitt. "Unusual" would also be someone watching Pitt.

He would not qualify for a free drink for staying for the whole game.
