My fellow Penn Staters, the election for alumni Trustees ends on May 3, 2018. Although I chose not to seek re-Election, I want all of you to know that I wholeheartedly endorse the candidacies of Alvin DeLevie, Brandon Short and Rob Tribeck.
My experience of the past six years gives me a unique perspective on the qualities required of a candidate to serve effectively as a Trustee today. First, all Trustees must be engaged. Engagement means more than simply showing up for photo opportunities. If that were true then anyone could travel to Harrisburg and claim they are working on much needed Board reform only on Penn State Capitol Day.
Second, Trustees must be willing to challenge the Administration. In fact, the Non-Profit Corporation Act encourages Trustees to independently verify the veracity of the information they receive from the Administration.
Finally, priorities are what you do and not what you say. The University has experienced great turmoil over the past 6 1/2 years. Where have the candidates been over that period? It’s not enough to say that you haven’t stood by idly. I can say with much certainty that Alvin DeLevie, Brandon Short and Rob Tribeck are not Johnny come latelys to the fight for our great alma mater. They have my unwavering support.
And remember, every vote counts. Let’s send a message to the Penn State Administration that the alumni are committed, engaged and persistent in our fight to right the wrongs of the past. Let’s make this year’s voter turnout the highest totals yet.
