OT: Mardi Gras Advice

We have the opportunity to go to Mardi Gras this year. A friend was invited to be on a float during Bacchus (supposedly one of the biggest parades) so he asked us to join him in NO for the festivities. I had no idea there were so many parades. We're planning on hitting several parades and events.

Who's been? Input/advice?
First thought: how old are you? The French Quarter is hard to take if you are sober or older than 30.
I attended three years when I was in my twenties and loved it. Vowed to never miss it while I was single.
The parades are great. Some of the marching bands are incredible - Southern, Jackson St.
It is better to stay outside of the French Quarter, but near enough to walk there.
My wife and I visited NO last spring and Bourbon St. is still for the young and stoned or drunk.

Definitely older 😂 so we’re not into Bourbon St anymore.

We were there for a Bills game years ago during Halloween. We said then that NO during Halloween made Vegas look like attending church.

Our friends are older too and know the areas to avoid. I was wondering how the parades are different than Bourbon St. maybe they aren’t. 🤷‍♂️

Lived 5 blocks from the parade route for 10 years and attended parades every night. Had tons of family & friends come in over the years.
Daytime parades are more family friendly than the big Weekend night Parades. Bacchus and Endymion are the two huge weekend parades. Bacchus is Sunday evening in New Orleans and Endymion is Saturday evening in Mid-City. Attached is a link to all of the parades. Of course, weather plays a big factor if the parade will be enjoyable or not.

Thanks! We’re going to do both of those parades and maybe some others. We’re staying in or near Metairie at a place that’s along one of the smaller parade routes. We’re also going to Rendezvous after Bacchus. Shaq is the King and supposedly ZZ Top will entertain.

The group we’re going with is pretty seasoned and will take great care of us. I’m told they rent a lockable porta-potty every year. Apparently a luxury at these parades 😂

You learn something everyday. Never heard of lockable porta-potties for rent -- sweet. Going to send to Kraft; can make a fortune at FB parking lots.

I have an ex brother in law who is a Garden District trust buster and former head of Louisiana Republican Party.

Never been to Mardi Gras but the traditions and social connections/ strata are deeply woven into the power structure in Nawlins.

His bachelor party was in a private room upstairs at Antiones. I've never seen anything like it and never will again. Unreal. 5 star food, blue blazered Vandy grads throwing drink glasses into the burning fireplaces. Live entertainment around and on the table.....

The dirty underbelly of that city is right on the surface. Always pay heed and be smart. Tourists are marks....had a buddy get mugged and beaten, and my parents witnessed a "Kung foo fight" near their car in a parking garage of someone trying to stop a car jacking.

Be safe.

Enjoy!

Been there many times. Don't take children. Many think it's just a big party! Wrong. Every type of evil you can think of. I'm sure there are many with weapons!

Uptown area during are generally safe for children. Nights are probably ok also. Stay away from the downtown area.

Your right. But when people think of Mari Gras, it's Bourbon St, Toulouse, etc. And if you have an attractive wife or girlfriend, men will surround her and begin chanting at her to take off her blouse. That's how people get beads! (Except at the parades)

It the quarter the woman doesn't even have to be pretty, just has to have boobs.

Like others, I've been there several times on business but not attended Mardi Gras. Its not my thing. And I am no fan of Bourbon Street. However, the restaurant scene is fantastic. My favorite is Pascal's Manale (LINK) which is located in the Garden District. You can take the street car there from Bourbon Street. The other place is Cafe Dumond. (LINK) They have the best beignets and chicory coffee. It has been a while since I've gone so things have changed. Of course, if you are into the jazz/blues the music is great as well.

I once saw a guy shooting drugs into his arm on Bourbon Street and nobody cared. One the way back from Pascal's after a business meeting on the cable car, a really hot gal struck up a conversation with a co-worker. She worked in an all-night bakery and invited us over for drinks, finger food, and coffee. She was really good looking so we all thought that was cool. She got off and the driver turned to us and said "guys, you know that is a dude right?" Kinda put a damper on the festivities. Lastly, the last time I was there I stayed at the Ritz Carlton. A co-worker and I walked up and down Bourbon Street as it was a Monday Night and other was an NFL game on. A guy passed us with a newborn baby in the basket on a bicycle. The guy looked like he was down and out and the baby couldn't have been more than a couple of months old. My friend and I considered calling child services but there were hundreds of people that saw him and nobody seemed to care. Later, we saw the bike leaning against a wall in an ally way. The guy was smoking a cigarette and the baby was still in the basket. It's always bothered me that I didn't do anything. But that is NO, I guess.

The WW2 museum is supposed to be worth the time to visit. (LINK)

Other than that, I've got nothin.

I've been to Mardi Gras multiple times. I prefer going earlier in the festival (i.e. Bacchus is the Sunday before Fat Tuesday) rather than right at the end. In fact, I'll be there in a few weeks to partake in some of the earlier festivities.

The weekend that you are talking about (in this case first weekend of March) is pretty insane (I've been that weekend twice). Flight/hotels/restaurant booking will all be pretty outrageous, so if you don't already have those....good luck. The Quarter is NUTS that weekend. I'd actually steer clear of it (or at least steer clear of Bourbon St). Just a mass of people (think the worst crowd control you've ever seen at a sporting event or concert). Sometime you don't get to pick which direction to walk because the crowd is just pushing you.

Alternative areas that will be less insane (but still very crowded) are Frenchmen Street (two blocks of bars all with live music), and a few blocks of the CDB (e.g. there's a strip on Tchoupitoulas that has some good bars) or you can head uptown (there's some good stuff on Magazine in the Upper Garden District/Irish Channel neighborhoods).

I'm not a big parade fan -- some of the HS marching bands are pretty good and some of the floats are creative (although less so in the bigger parades; but there are smaller parades that are pet themed or Star Wars themed or NC17 themed). Getting a good spot to watch is tricky -- people basically tailgate in "their" spot many hours before the parade (lawn chairs, coolers, etc). If you are doing that, suggest finding somewhere that is nearish to a bar, so when you have to use the restroom, you can go in, use the facilities (buy a beer to go of course) and then head back to your spot. If $$ are not object, you can look into ticketed seating on grandstands or balconies. I've never done that but it's a thing. What would be awesome is if your friend knew someone having a house party along the parade route and could get you an invite (would likely have to show up with booze and maybe some food to share). That way you have a built in home base (with restroom) and would be fighting the entire masses of humanity along the parade route. I had the opportunity one year and it was the best experience I had at a parade.

And of course be safe in crowds (pickpockets) and in talking to random people on the street (google "common street scams" before going).

Please report back if you end up going!

The parades are different than Bourbon Street. Parades (especially if you move away from Canal St) are far more locals than tourists. No one is flashing their "equipment" for beads. People are still drinking, dancing, having a good time, but the parade route isn't crazy (unless you are right near Canal St (border with the Quarter).

WW2 museum is very good if you are a history buff. Good rainy day activity (as is the Aquarium) although both might be crowded if it's raining that weekend.

Also, suggest trying to get restaurant reservations ahead of time. "Winging it" that weekend doesn't work very well.

Great stuff. Thanks for sharing. We’ve been to NO a couple of times. Bourbon St was something to see as a younger person. Definitely not my style now so I hope to avoid it.

The WWII Museum is still on my list of places to see. I don’t know if we will be able to do it this time either since we’re with a group of friends.

Friends of friends live there and will hook us up with everything- including the lockable porta-potty along the route for Endymion. It will be cool to experience the streets for Endymion and how that will differ from Rendezvous after Bacchus. We’re supposedly staying at home in Metairie along the smaller parade routes.

Have you (or anyone) been to Rendezvous? I see videos of it but not much detail about it.

LOL @ "every type of evil"

I bet you are fun at parties.

It's a great time. Just be safe
I've been told I bring the party with me, but not wife swaps or drunkenness and orgies! If that's what you like more power to ya buddy!

That's true, but if accompanied by an attractive wife , do not be surprised if people are feeling her up in the crowd!!!

Just because you don't like something doesn't make it "evil"

Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola

Some practical advice - watch your step. NO has the worst sidewalks and most pot holes anywhere. And probably the most ortho doctors who specialize in ankle injuries.

Dabo's dad fell while in New Orleans and died from complications from surgery so I read.

Went to a party during Halloween in the Quarter probably around 1983 -1984. Was invited by a gay man who was related to my cousin (BIL). So, my cousin, his older brother (Nam Vet - body like a biker dude), me and the BIL go to Halloween party in the Quarter. We were in the Quarter bar hopping. Upon entering the apartment, a guy dresses as Wonder Woman puts his hands inside my vest and rubs me up my chest. I grabbed his hands and said, "Not Me". His makeup was done perfectly as he was probably one of the prettiest "women" I had ever seen at that point in my life. Ohhh, what could have been. ha-ha

There are a few places like that, Vegas comes to mind, that are pretty incredible. However, NO has that really heavy humidity and smell that just makes it feel dirty. I always feel like I need to take a two hour shower after coming home from NO. I don't get that feeling from Vegas or anywhere else.

Yeah, when walking through the French Quarter, your shoes actually stick to the street from all the booze. Feels like glue.

The stickiness is not the issue. The puddles of yuck (the locals call "gravy") are more disconcerting. I usually bring old shoes if I'll be out in the Quarter.

If you possess a CCP, that is reciprocal, have it.
