The airline magazines always have a top 10 steak restaurants, that I believe is based on their paid advertising dollars towards this list. Therefore, those restaurants are not based on truly a poll of bests that we can really count on. Therefore, since I love a good steak restaurant, I am listing MY favorites. Please let me know your thoughts:

1. Peter Luger's - Brooklyn, NY - (Clearly the best IMO, the bacon may be better than the steak)
2. Ruth's Chris - any location - (hot melted butter on anything is great)
3. Smith & Wollensky - the original in NYC - (can't beat the quality and quantity, can also get a 3 1/2 lobster)
4. Elway's Steak House - Denver -(I don't like Elway personally, but his steaks are pretty darn good)
5 .Fogo de Chao - Atlanta, Dallas - (just went last night for father's Day- Brazil at it's best - better than it's soccer team)
6. Capital Grill - Best Filet Mignon compared to any of the top 5 above.(Even without the butter)
7. Barclay's Prime - Philly - Best Steak house south of New York
8. Bob's Chop House - Plano, TX- best of the best in Texas
9. Gibson's Steaks - Chicago - pretty good steaks and huge desserts!
10. Bones - An Atlanta old style steak restaurant in the beautiful BuckHead area

I've been to Ruth Chris and Gibson's both are very good (Duh!) Both are better when a natural entity is buying!!

Wolfgangs has passed Lugers in the past few years I believe

Mastros (I went to the one in Scottsdale) deserves a high spot on the list as well

No Delmonico's?

I was never impressed by Lugers. Thought it was overrated. Like the Emperor with no clothes and no one would say anything.

Ruth's Chris is good, as is Sparks, and Bones. Capital Grille also very good. My favorite, however, is DelFriscos.

Del Frisco's is good. Not quite as good as Capital Grille.
Bobby Vans was my favorite when in DC.
Manny's is currently my all time favorite in Minneapolis, MN

Ruth's Chris is excellent
Will try Smith and Wollensky ASAP!

I have been to Luger's and I for one really enjoy it. And the comment about the bacon being better than the steak may very well be appropriate.

Would also add, based on my own experiences (no particular order)

1. Ruth's Chris
2. Olde Homestead - 9th and 14th in NYC.
3. Del Frisco's - Philly.
4. Shula's- Miami.
5. Barclay's Prime - Philly.
6. Gibson's - Chicago.

I'll take the Palm, Sullivan's, and Outback. Sparks is way to expensive even by NYC standards. Club A (I think that is what it's called) in Manhattan is also really good.

Not necessarily in order....

Peter Lugers ( Brooklyn vs Long Island) , Delmonico's , Old Homestead , , Del Frisco ( Texas) , Murray's , Keens , House of Prime Rib ( SF) , Cattlemans...

I like the Prime Rib in Balto. rates right up there (INMO), with Ruth's Chris.

Regarding your selection of Bones in ATL, I always thought Chops (now called Chops Lobster Bar) served the better steak. Bones wins on atmosphere, though.

Chops and Bones very similar, but I always thought the food overall at Chops was better than Bones, steaks, seafood, sides etc

Without a doubt the best steak I have ever eaten was in Cottonwood Falls, KS.

I travel a lot, and no overpriced city steakhouse even comes close.
I had a grilled steak in Montana while on a Dinosaur Dig. Saw the rancher slaughter the cow, him and his hands put on chain mail gauntlets and leggings and butcher it, and choice cuts were put straight on the grill. That was a July 4th to remember and about the best steak I ever had. Maybe not as tender as those that have been dry aged, but tasty as hell.

If you are including chains, how could you list Ruth's Chris but not Morton's?
Ruth's - lots of butter poured on top of fat, yummie!

Mortons is good, and the quality is consistent across locations. I had forgotten about Chops but they are good as well. I also, to my surprise, had a really great meal at Shula's in Manhattan.

The Chop House in Chicago, Sullivan's, Morton's Fogo de Chao.... would like to try some others on the list.

Bobby Van's might be the best Steakhouse in NYC so not sure how it didn't make the list.

Apparently none of you folks have been to Argentina. Chicago is also woefully under represented in this thread.

Any of Jeff Ruby's restaurants, though for atmosphere, I think I'll go with the Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse in downtown Cincinnati.

I've eaten at Fogo de Chao in Atlanta and in Baltimore and I think my son said it best, "This is what meat is supposed to taste like."

Morton's is good, but I had a bad experience with their service once and that's why it didn't make my list. If I had to add a few more based on forgetting about them, I would add Berns in Tampa, and Manny's in Minneapolis. A few of you listed Bobby Vans in NYC, but I hadn't been there yet. I will try it next time there.

Actually I think the ones on the airline list that I've been to are actually pretty good even if somehow linked to paid advertisement.....
haven't been to any of the top ones in NYC.

I am in military and been stationed around country/world for last 25 years and love a good steak....some of mine:
1) Ringside in Portland - probably favorite steak and service combination.
2) Grill 225 in Charleston - great ribeye
3) Charley's in Tampa
4) Grey Moss outside San Antonio - wood fire cooked prime with great romantic outdoor seating
5) Ruth's Chris - like the consistency from store to store
6) Dicky Brennan's in New Orleans - and their fish restaurant has awesome blackened redfish!
7) Delmonico in Las Vegas - steak was good but my service was not and it was loud
8) Texas de Brazil - San Antonio - great if you like Brazilian style

one's I wouldn't recommend:
III Forks - Dallas - steak average and my service was poor (may have been waiter dependent)
Bohanon's in San Antonio - loud, steak good but cramped quarters and service average

Gotta love the burger at Morton's! Crazy price but good when just sitting at the bar.

Ruth Chris is so OVERRATED! Serving a high grade piece of meat in a pool of butter and served on a piping hot plate that only continues to cook your steak past your ordered temp is just wrong.

Also think that McKendrick's is better than Bones and Chops in Atlanta.

Plaza III in Kansas City is phenomenal. My son's best friend's Dad owns Elways (with John), I will pass this on to him.

As a a self proclaimed "foodie", I rarely order steak in restaurants. Can cook an equally good one on the grill for 1/3 rd the price. I think Steak Houses are the lowest rank in the restaurant themes.

Anyone with me?

Not really. I do agree that a great steak can be grilled at home, the level of steak you can get at a great steak house doesn't compare to what you get at a grocery store. Great dry aged, prime rated steak makes a huge difference. And if you were to buy the quality of steak as a top tier steak house, you're going to pay for it.

I can't believe how many chain steak houses you guys reference as being the best. I can think of a few steak houses locally that put the chains to shame. Surprised I haven't seen Mastros yet. Current favorite...the bone in ribeye at Bavette's in Chicago.

Gotta try Kevin Rathbun's in Atlanta too. Located in Inman Park....Excellent steak

SInce you are a foodie, and like to cook great steak on the grill...
You owe it to yourself to purchase some beef from Bryan Flannery.
Yes they are expensive. And you have to ship overnight.
But he has some sales, will probably have some incentive before July 4.
https://www.flannerybeef.com/

You really should check his beef out!
