OT: My Top 10 steak restaurants in the USA?

latest

As a a self proclaimed "foodie", I rarely order steak in restaurants. Can cook an equally good one on the grill for 1/3 rd the price. I think Steak Houses are the lowest rank in the restaurant themes.

Anyone with me?

Most good places dry age the steak which adds a considerable amount of flavor. You can do that yourself of course but you need a few weeks to prepare.

Two of my favorite in Brooklyn are:
St Anselme -- probably too hipster for most but they beat Peter Lugers hands down.
Prime Meats - I brought my dad here and he said it was the best he has ever had

Gotta try Kevin Rathbun's in Atlanta too. Located in Inman Park....Excellent steak
OzonePitt: If Rathburn's reaturant is as good as their sandwiches they sell at the Braves games in Tuner Field, I can imagine how good the steaks are. Their sandwiches are the best by far at the stadium!. I will try this. Also, I have been to McKendricks as another poster mentioned. Yes, it was very good, but a bit overpriced.

Raises hand.

Plus, not very interested in choking to death while in public. Kind of unbecoming.

Me!! As I noted those places are places to go when a natural entity is buying!!!

Anyone ever been to a "grill your own steak" restaurant? We went to one once for a work function, the place was also a terrible microbrewery. Long story short, you pay extra to make your own meal, you probably mess up the steak, and you go home stinking of charcoal. I'm not surprised it went out of business. When I eat out, I want someone to cook my food for me.

Yes, I went to one in Fond du Lac, WI many years ago, when I was selling stuff to Mercury Marine. I am pretty sure that place went out of business as well.

If you have a good butcher I absolutely agree.

My perfect grilled steak

1) 3 inch thick porter house. On plate combine equal parts kosher salt and coarse ground pepper, thyme, rosemary, sage. Oil steak lightly and press all sides into above mixture

2) Heat grill to very high (hand over fire for two one thousand). Grill on one side for 7 minutes. Flip and grill other side for 6-7 minutes.

3) Take steak and place it upright on the T bone Grill vertical like this until thermometer reads 120-125'F. Remove.

4). Rest for 10 minutes. Slice along both sides of T and cut into 1/2 inch strips (against the meat grain) . Steak pieces will be rare to medium...Perfect for 4-6 people

The Chop House in Chicago, Sullivan's, Morton's Fogo de Chao.... would like to try some others on the list.

Chop House in Chicago; you have to be kidding. Was told it was the best in the country; could not say it was the worst because it was lower than that.

Most of the top ten list was pretty good, but the best place to get steaks in the U.S. is Indianapolis. Not even going to list the possible places that are in this fair city, but by far the best is St. Elmo's. Three great things about the place: steaks, service, atmosphere!

I've been to Peter Luger's twice and didn't get what the big deal was. Best steaks I've had are:

Del Frisco's NYC
The Palm in Las Vegas (been there many times, and it's usually not great, but this one filet I had was amazing.)
A buffalo steak my dad cooked
A NY strip at Eddie's in Great Falls, Montana. Great flavor.
Nine in Las Vegas (I think that's the name)

I actually forgot about St. Elmo's in Indy. I ate there with my son, but I have to admit that being there with my son was more memorable than how good the steak was :)

Hell, i ate there with my beautiful & wonderful wife, but i still remember that first steak i had there; the shrimp cocktail was excellent also.

The airline magazines always have a top 10 steak restaurants, that I believe is based on their paid advertising dollars towards this list. Therefore, those restaurants are not based on truly a poll of bests that we can really count on. Therefore, since I love a good steak restaurant, I am listing MY favorites. Please let me know your thoughts:

1. Peter Luger's - Brooklyn, NY - (Clearly the best IMO, the bacon may be better than the steak)
2. Ruth's Chris - any location - (hot melted butter on anything is great)
3. Smith & Wollensky - the original in NYC - (can't beat the quality and quantity, can also get a 3 1/2 lobster)
4. Elway's Steak House - Denver -(I don't like Elway personally, but his steaks are pretty darn good)
5 .Fogo de Chao - Atlanta, Dallas - (just went last night for father's Day- Brazil at it's best - better than it's soccer team)
6. Capital Grill - Best Filet Mignon compared to any of the top 5 above.(Even without the butter)
7. Barclay's Prime - Philly - Best Steak house south of New York
8. Bob's Chop House - Plano, TX- best of the best in Texas
9. Gibson's Steaks - Chicago - pretty good steaks and huge desserts!
10. Bones - An Atlanta old style steak restaurant in the beautiful BuckHead area
I would add Bern's Steak House in Tampa and Flaglers in Palm Beach.

I haven't been there since the 90's, but it was good then... better than Outback at least. It may be resting on its laurels now, but I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.

Any of Jeff Ruby's restaurants, though for atmosphere, I think I'll go with the Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse in downtown Cincinnati.

I was going to mention The Precinct in Cincy...the best steak I have ever had.

Jeff Ruby's in Louisville is also very good.

That shrimp cocktail is great. The horseradish nearly burned me to death, but I like that.

I've had Chop House too. That was very disappointing.

Best steaks I've had were at:

Del Frisco's in Manhattan
Pappas Bros. in Houston

And an honorable mention to Doe's Eat Place in Bentonville, AR. That place was a gem. Always enjoyed Morton's, too.

St. Elmo Steakhouse in Indianapolis.

I like EB Green's in Buffalo. Not only do they have great steaks, but they have the legendary Jackie Jacko playing the piano on most nights. JJ is an unbelievable talent; although he's up there in age and didn't sing the last time I was there.

The Prime Rib in Baltimore. Have a pre dinner Martini at the bar with the Ghost of Johnny U. Feel the room come Alive with a classic jazz trio. Great rib eye, solid sides, reasonable wine list. The original, tucked away in a location that will surprise. Park underneath in the garage and take the back steps up....

Foots go west, where the beef is raised.

Chop House in Denver right near Coors Field and Johnnys in Omaha, NE. Last one is old school, like a trip to the 1950s.

Rutgersal: 8 of your 10 choices are in the NYC / NJ areas. I know some of the better steak restaurants are in NYC, but venture out a little more :)

Unknow to many, but The Pine Club in Dayton Ohio is one amazing place. Was once highlighted in Fortune as the top grossing steak house in USA. Don't be so anti Ohio to not try it if ever in that area.

One more vote for St.Elmos in Indy and Berns Steakhouse in Tampa. How about El.Gaucho in Aruba.
