Any suggestions for economical but safe parking?
Overnight in financial district. 10 days at JFK.

Thanks but coming to NYC by car
OK, still, as others have said below, find a place to park the car just outside the city and uber the rest. Perhaps park at the hotel or where-ever you are staying and Uber/Lyft from there. NY is the only city where I'd make that recommendation.

So, I gather you are driving in, and then staying in the Financial District, and then driving out to JFK and heading out somewhere for 10 days?

Try a website called Spot Hero for parking rates for your anticipated times you will be in the financial district or near JFK. Don't forget to factor in the cost of tolls - if you come in through Lincoln or Holland tunnel you will pay $15 to enter, and if you use the Battery tunnel to get out on the Belt Parkway, I think that's another toll (or that could be coming into the City). So, take those costs into account.

Another option near JFK is to look for local hotels that will allow long term parking, and they will shuttle you into the airport. Sometimes you have to stay there, some places - -they don't require it. They may be cheaper than Spot Hero options.

Look at parking at Marriott LaGuardia Airport. LGA is about halfway between tunnel and JFK. Parking will be about $35/day which is far less than Manhattan. Safe and covered as well. You can Uber into city from there.

Good suggestion. Also, Battery toll is $9.50, each way.

If you’re coming from the west, and I assume you are, or you’d be coming from Long Island and probably know the deal, you can park in a couple of garages right in Journal Square, a half-block from the PATH, and take the PATH train to the Financial District. You can probably park 24 hours for under $20, and the PATH is a 11 minute ride ($2.75) to FiDi. If you’re looking to save money.

JFK -- Numerous off-site parking lots and shuttle services -- just search online, it should be $11-14 a day if you pay in advance (I think the airport's own long term parking is $18 a day).

I wouldn't park at JFK and transport back into the city -- the trip is close to an hour and will cost you more than what you'll save on parking in the financial dist.

When you drive to JFK, just be aware the traffic can get incredibly bad, and if it's bad, it can take you 90 minutes from Manhattan easily. Leave plenty of extra time -- better to have to kill time at the airport than the stress of getting there late.

I also would not take Uber or taxi from Manhattan to JFK. The traffic can get incredibly bad and the trip can be 90 minutes or more if it's bad. If you're on a schedule to make a plane, sitting in a taxi when the Belt Parkway is a parking lot is not good for your blood pressure. Go to Penn Station and take the Long Island Railroad to the Airtran station at JFK -- should get you there in 45 minutes or so. Subway is cheaper but so much slower (about an hour) it's not worth it, since you still have to pay for the Airtran shuttle ticket.
We're arriving by car from the west and plan to visit the Financial District, Freedom Tower, etc. Spend the night there and head to JFK for a 10 day overseas trip.

At this point I'm probably going to park in a garage near the hotel ($32) then head to JFK after lunch for a 4:50pm flight. I've seen off site parking options like Econopark for about $100.

Years ago.....I am talking circa 1973, before cell phones/satellite radio, etc....when my family would travel overseas from JFK, my dad was paranoid as hell about missing planes because of traffic on the Belt Parkway....which would make his blood pressure go through the roof.....so, for 930 PM flights, we would leave South Jersey at......8 AM. Just so we had enough time to deal with traffic. My mother would claim he was crazy for having us leave so early.....until the one year, roughly 1976....when a nasty accident took out the right lane and the shoulder, near the (then) Mobil gas station....held us up for three hours, in the summer on the Belt Parkway. But, because we had left so early, we made our flight with plenty of time to spare, but all the other travelers on the Belt who were stuck in traffic missed their flights, and there's was much angst.

My father had a smile on his face like the cat that ate the canary....and he never got tired of telling the story that....my mother had to admit he was correct.

Today is my late father's birthday and I have been thinking about him....this thread reminded me of this story.

There are plenty of parking deals for JFK on Groupon. I parked at a place called Smart Park which worked out fine.

Good story.

The internet says that the drive from Wall Street to JFK is 45 minutes. I plan to allow 2 hours. Leave Wall Street at 12:30, arrive at off site parking before 2:30, flight at 4:50.

Anybody who thinks NYC cant be economical has never used spot hero

FWIW, I used to travel frequently to the Fin District and always used the hotel valet. I parked in a garage on my own once and it actually cost more then the hotel valet. Then again, the company was covering it. Made some personal trips with family and it is worth the extra $$ to me to not worry about the car and where to park. At JFK, we used AirPark a couple of years ago, same thing, just handed them the car and keys and hopped in the shuttle to our terminal. I go for stress free these days instead of being over concerned about price. I don't want a nice trip ruined by the hassle and stress that can come along with worry about parking the car, etc.

Of course! It's free until you get ticketed/towed

Many years ago (about 45 to be truthful), I was going to be in NYC for a month. I parked my car in the street and would dutifully move it every day due to the alternate side of the street parking. After about four days, I got towed, evidently because my bumper extended over a no parking zone. That turned out to be a blessing. I simply left the car at the impound for the rest of month before paying the ticket/towing fee and heading home. Those fees were much less than it would have cost me to actually park it in a lot. That may not be true anymore however.
