OT: Pat Devlin Released by Chicago Bears

Prior and Devlin must have been same skill level. Both cut before camp starts

... and blames it on the Bears coaching staff.
What is the Downingtown Disciple up to nowadays? Humble bragging on some other message board?

Coolest Fish's best running gag was getting under Marsh's skin. Always cracked me up how riled up he could get Marsh to be.

Kid earned an NFL paycheck for 3-4 years. If he' s done with the league , then he did better than most.

That's the reality of it all. Just like the jump from HS to College. Not all the HS guys with stars become stars in college. The best college teams average 3 pros a year. The best. And that includes not only guys like Devlin, but guys like Joe Iorio who dressed for one game in his NFL career and did not play.

I don't have a hate-on for Devlin, but he's like a lot of other guys that have streets named after him (One Way). He bailed on Miami. He bailed on us. Then tore it up at 1-AA, but never made a mark in the NFL. He did draw a paycheck though, so good for him.

Clearly Joe and Jay picked the right man to play up here.

MCE was a Joe-hating bore and is not missed in these parts.

Some people need to get over Devlin transferring. How long has it been?? You're starting to sound a lot like Pitt posters.

I often wonder that myself. He's not active on FOS or 24/7 either.

Ever since Anthony Lubrano called him out, by name, a couple of years ago.....he's been quiet. I'm not complaining at all, but Marsh's hatred and obsession about certain things always made me wonder.

PD and DC both handled it well IMO. PD like at any other school in the country with a QB ahead of him bailed which is fine and completely normal. He never spouted hate or did anything out of line. He wanted to get on the field and only had so many years to do it.

The problem was with the D-town family and faithful that attacked DC for 2 straight years and never once gave tipped their cap to him. I remember MCE from the plotit days and he probably was the most valuable poster there. Great breakdowns, intelligent football posts, and he actually used to love Joe. I think it got way to personal for him when DC got the nod and man did it ever sour the guy and some others surrounding PD. It may have been the worst case of little league parent syndrome I've ever witnessed.

I always thought it was more than the Devlin situation that got MCE hating Joe.

I was around during the plotit days as well and was also in an E-mail group with Marsh called The Ball State Club. He was an incredibly knowledgeable and valuable poster.
He went off the deep end after the '99 Minny. game. After that he was a Joe hater and it culminated in the Pat Devlin/Darell Clark duel.
After that he became a total D-bag. Although he was not alone in his D-baggery, there are still a few around today who took great pleasure in
tearing Clark down and never giving him or Jay (yea I know it was hard) any credit.
Pat Devlin didn't and doesn't deserve some of the bashing he's taken on this board. If he ever said anything bad about his time at PSU I never heard about it.

What some of you seem to forget is that Joe admitted he mishandled the Devlin situation a few years after it all transpired. Hindsight......

I think Joe handled it just fine. The better man played and the other guy sat.

This happens all the time. It's nothing new. Guys get beat out every day in camp and practice. Then they have a choice - deal with a changed role, or transfer somewhere else to play. Nothing wrong with that.

Likewise fans get behind their hometown boy and are loyal to the bitter end. That's fine too - but when you never let up about how dense the coaching staff is, it's obvious you're not a Penn State fan, you're a Joe Blow fan.

Yeah, correct about the Minnesota game. 1999 was when I became a regular and Marsh was the king of the board, in a way that doesn't exist nowadays. An extremely knowledgeable poster, you learned a lot from his posts. Then, yeah, he started making things personal, his posts started losing what made them exceptional. After that he was just another mean guy with an opinion, to him everyone had an agenda.

LOL -- Man, it was so easy to push his buttons. It's rare in life that something that fun is also that easy. I miss MCE.

Joe "admitted" he probably should have played Devlin during the Iowa game, and maybe gotten him some more mop up duty. That's it.

While Marsh was a polarizing figure, he contributed a lot of information to this board. I think he was one of those posters who made the board more entertaining. There are certain posters on this board (and on most boards) who like crush dissent by personally attacking people who hold different points of view rather than argue the merits of their positions. It appears that Marsh got tired of being attacked for not holding the majority view on this board. IMO, the loss of him as a poster to this board his not insignificant. I liked reading his posts even if I disagreed with him.

As for Devlin, IMO, Joe Paterno made the right choice when he started Clark. I think Devlin made a mistake by leaving but it was his life and his choice. He has cashed a few NFL paychecks so I am happy for him. I think he would have been drafted if he had played his senior year at PSU.

One of the things that made the old board special is that we'd have regular visitors like Anison and Dayton Buck, both great posters. Anison, especially, was a real valuable poster and helped this board rock. Then they both got chased off, pretty much. It's not just here, I used to go to the UM and OSU free rivals boards and get a good thread going and you never see them there any more.

Agee. I never had a problem with either Anison or Dayton Buck.
And speaking of valuable posters that were run off none more so than "Ed" (at least I think that was his name) He was awesome but 47 Ronin had a real problem with him...actually lots of people had a real problem with 47 Ronin. LOL.

I tend to agree, the Clark / Devlin saga is ancient history given what has happened since. Both were good college QB's and it became trench warfare to try to discuss them. Then the "Joe hater" accusation was trotted out imo to vilify those who disagreed w/ some of Joe's actions. My wife disagrees with some of my actions but doesn't hate me. I strongly, vigorously disagree with the word hate being tossed around. Hate is a vile word describing the most vile, angry, frustrated events multiplied into one emotion. I have trouble thinking more than a few people actually hated Joe and those few were likely located in State College, not on message boards.

That said yes there are always some who do hate other poeople for a variety of reasons. To do so over one decision involving a game or sport is a shame. I can remember more than a few offensive calls that I disagreed and thought Joe was off base but I did not hate him, it was his job to do so.

The word hate is best left off the vocabulary list for most of us.

Have I hated? Absolutely but I also had to resolve it and get on with my life. A life devoid of hate is a much happier life.

This is not a lecture but some thoughts from a person who suffered great

Did he play in the league long enough to get the pension? If so good for him.

There is no minimum number of years played to be eligible for an NFL pension. Believe Devlin has two creditable years, which would make him eligible for a pension of $940/mo at age 55.

Not really. Was only on the active roster at Miami for two years and another that was split between the practice squad (most of the season) and the active roster. Was on the Vikings' practice squad for about half a season. For his cup of coffee with the Bears, Devlin got $1,700 week.

Ha! My shameless flattery was enough to drag the Colorado Kraken out of his lair!

Have a good summer Fish.

Hahaha -- I still scan the board every now and then, and click on the topics that look like they could be polarizing and lead to "exciting" discussion/debate. Seeing "Devlin" in the subject line is going to get me to at least click and read. I just don't post as much because it doesn't seem as worth it anymore. {sad face} But anyway, if someone takes the time to mention me by name, and I see it, I'll want to show some appreciation with a response.
