The Pens are not playing the shutdown hockey that they carried into the playoffs last year, but they continue to win. The 4-3 OT win over Boston makes them 20-7-3 and on a 7 game win streak. I'm not complaining but if these guys match their offensive production with a renewed stifling defense, look out .

The top 5 teams in the Metropolitan division are down right, sick now

Pace of these streaks is unsustainable to say the least. I still don't think the Pens are playing anywhere close to their best hockey (particularly in their own end) but has to say a lot that they're sitting atop the league standings just past the 1/3 mark.

I don't get too much into following the NHL save for the Pens until college football is over but look at the Blue Jackets and Rangers and wait for a falloff. Flyers are intriguing team right now.

There may not be for the Jackets. Torts has done a great job here. His emphasis on conditioning has meant that the Jackets have ruled the third period--when it used to be the other way around. But this kind of streak will be tough to sustain for all of the division teams.

We'll get some more insight when the Jackets get LA, Pittsburgh, and Montreal at home next week. I'll be at the Pens game--and was at the 10-0 win over the Habs.

They're all going slump at some point, and it's improbable that any team can sustain shut-down hockey for 6 months. The question will be which teams are able to turn it on in April. Right now is just posturing to get into the tournament.
