OT Penn State is a life long journey

I was on the Penn State campus for 3 days last week. I had a startling realization. At 77 years old, I graduated before most of the parents of the current students were born. Being a Lion is a life long journey. It raised me from childhood poverty to a successful career & life.

Doubt that you'll find many impoverished, or even lower middle class, students on the main campus these days.

Great to hear Mary. I still consider the choice to go to Penn St as one of the key/ best decisions of my life (if not THE best)

Expect you would still see a lot of them at branch campuses in poor areas of the state. Which is part of what a State university system is supposed to offer. Everyone does not need to go to Main Campus, was never true and as long as they keep doing at least a decent job should never be true.

I think the whole 'Make University Park an elite campus' was a mistake, but as long as they maintain the rest of the state system it will be ok. Only PA and Wisconsin have such systems.

Not so sure about "a lot" at branch campuses either.

I am in the same boat.
In the 50s you could work In the mills for the summer. If you worked the hours offered you could earn enough to cover a years expenses at dear old State.
Didn't have much of a summer but the long term goal was worth the effort

WE ARE PENN STATE.
also very greateful for the opportunity and life it enabled me to have.

When I attended Ogontz campus in the mid sixties, everyone I knew there that was seeking a Bachelor degree or beyond was required to transfer to the Main diploma factory after about two years.
All those colleges in the Phila area, and it was my cheapest option, which pretty much made it my only option. But I never considered our family to be impoverished.

I agree. Thanks Mary. I am 77 and started at PSU in 1962 - pre-Paterno, at least as head coach. Returned after military service in 1970 to finish my senior year. Doctorate from NYU, but still have only a PSU sticker on my car. State College and PSU are my personal Oz, and route 80 the yellow brick road! When things are difficult, I return to PSU for some emotional rejuvenation. WE ARE!

"I think the whole 'Make University Park an elite campus'"

You 'think' this was a mistake? PSUs ranking is in the toilet and the tuition is blowing out.

Neither of those are good.

That is concerning. I do not understand the drop in academic standing.
They have the tuition for $'s for sure, some large grants for research, and state funding. I don't think it is funding - more likely leadership and the lack of a solid goal of academic excellence. As much as I love the football at PSU, academics far transcends football. Something is not right.
