The entire front office is meeting Bryce in Vegas this weekend. What are the rumors in your town on this? Nats fans in the DMV seem to be ambivalent about his possible return.

He's a generational type player. Probably the only player I would take over him is Mike Trout, and that is in no way a knock on Harper. They both remind me a lot of Barry Bonds, they're that good.

How many long, big money contracts go to 26 year olds with at least 5-6 years left in their prime? Signing a 30 or a 32 year old to a big money, long term deal is very different than the situations with Machado and Harper.
Thus far, zero.
That said I think phl is a bad combo for Bryce. He can be dour, and he can run cold. Phickle Phil phans could turn on him quickly and things could go south fast.

I want him as a player, of course, but not the payroll. Mike Trout on the other hand I’d be willing to pay a little more. Still not market value though.

How about a guy wanting $40M per toughening up a bit? Mike Schmidt was unjustly booed for years. Did he snowflake up? No. He toughened up and he turned the fan base.

Trout is worth it. Harper is not.

300 million can make the club very good from top to bottom. He will continue to just hit into the shift

This is a Pete Rose type of signing, love him if he plays for your team, hate him if he plays against you. Big difference is on the field, Pete played every play like it was his last play he was ever going to play. Today players play to preserve themselves for the long term. The money is that large a role. I would rather wait till Trout becomes available and add other pieces. Better player and personality on and off the field. Machado is a cancer, Harper better clubhouse person yet both coast at times. When you head straight to the clubhouse after hitting a popup in the infield, not professional. As a fielder, I would let it land and walk it over to first base. I know I'm old, just play the game like Chase Utley.

I still can't get over Phillies fans booed the greatest third-baseman of all-time.

I dunno, I could be wrong. But I watch about 140 nats games a year, and it’s just something you hear down here.

Bitchy yes, but carcinogenic, nope
Good description. I think his whining is touched on from time to time by the media. Probably another reason he won't take questions from the media.

I think the attraction with Harper is that he's a power hitter who bats lefty. A guy who can deliver 45-50 homers per year and 100 RBI's. But 300 million is ridiculous. How did Giancarlo Stanton work out for the Yankees? How's Albert Pujols working out for the Angels with that 240 million Guaranteed contract. I feel that the Phillies could do much better than B. Harper. You can build a great ball club with 300 million.

Stanton hit almost 40 home runs and had 100 RBI last year, and had a 126 OPS+ and was 4.0 WAR. The Yankees are getting what they’re paying for, at least this season.

Didn't he hit 57 HR & 125 RBI's in his banner year? I'm not saying they expected the same production but I bet they were expecting 45 HR and 115 RBI's with significantly better production in the post season. With Yoenis Céspedes constantly hurt there were trading rumors of trading Stanton to the Mets for Noah Syndergaard. I'm glad Fred Wilpon said no.

Stanton was better last year btw. 38 homers and 100 RBI hitting nearly .270. Also 4.0 WAR
He does strike out a lot but so does Bryce.

A guy who can deliver 45-50 homers a year and 100 RBI????? In 7 years he has been over 40 home runs once...42. He has only hit over 30 twice in 7 years and he has only had over 100 RBIs one time in 7 years. Harper was a 1.3 WAR player last year. Bryce’s defense also took a dive, he was negative 24 defensive runs saved in right field. (That number is close, going off memory)

Manny machado might be a clubhouse cancer but his offensive numbers are crazy consistent every single year. You can count on what Manny will give you every year offensively. I would feel more confident in his long term return with the bat and he is an elite third baseman, pretty good short stop.

The only players i would feel comfortable giving that kind of contract...Trout and Betts.

Dudes a diva. Money well spent on others. Don’t touch him and let go to LAD. Perfect fit out there!

This is not specific on Harper, but I look at a contract like this $40 mil per year , $300 mil in entirety and I can't help but think if $40 mil per year is worth the WAR#, if you go out and use that $40 mil on other players. Isn't the idea to win a championship, and not just a marquee player to sell tickets??

For example, let's say Harper's WAR# with the Phillies would be +8. Those 8 more HYPOTHETICAL wins are costing you $40 for that season. So is that better than maybe going out and signing a really good LHS for say $18-20 mil per season who could slide into that #2 slot between Nola and Ariatta PLUS getting a solid Catcher for maybe $15 mil per season. What if a LHS and an improvement at Catcher gives you a WAR# of +9. Is spending $35 mil on those guys ..... and NOT being tied into 10 years on either ...... a better move that spending $40 mil on any one single player and being tied into 10 years ????

The intangible that people miss about Harper is his marketing value. He is absolutely a face of the franchise player who brings people out and sells jerseys. You build campaigns around him.

I think the Nat's interest is legit. At minimum, it drives up the price for the Phils. As a Phils fan, I want Harper over Machado.

That sounds like a great plan but problem is executing it. #2 starters don't hit the market very oftern. The Phillies tried to sign Corbin and it didn't work out and almost everyone here said the Nats overpaid. There's about 3 good catchers in the MLB today and the Phillies don't seem willing to meet the price tag on Realmuto. So do you want Keuchel and Grandal or Harper?
