OT: Phillies Nostalgia Day & Trivia Question

Following the Phillies last Spring Training game today, I returned to the Mecca of Spring Training for me- Jack Russell Stadium.

Ran the bases, threw in the bullpen, sat in the dugouts, and let the memories wash over me of countless days spent in the greatest stadium I ever had the privilege to watch games in. Had about a 2 hour conversation with the person who looks after the facility talking about our collective Jack memories and the special people who played there. Some REALLY cool stories.

Here is a fact and then a trivia question. 80 Hall of Famers played at the Jack and 11 players elected to the Hall wore a Phillies jersey while playing on the hallowed grounds. Name the 11 HOF’ers who donned the Phillies pinstripes who played at Jack Russell.

This is it with one correction. Pedro never wore a Phillies jersey at Jack Russell. He did appear as a Red Sox in Jack Russell. So, the list is the 11 stated above without Pedro.

Some other trivia about Jack Russell.

Willie Mays appeared as a 41 year old during his last Spring Training season. On the other extreme, a teenaged Johnny Bench appeared in a MORNING game held against the Phillies. Drysdale and Sutton pitched at Jack Russell, Koufax did not. Larry Doby played there, Jackie did not.

In reviewing the list of those who played at the Jack, one HOF’er made me scratch my head. I could not figure out Ron Santo. I forgot that Santo’s last season was as a White Sox so that he played in 1974 at The Jack.

Another Jack trivia that is the source of some debate. After playing 4 songs at the Jack and being shut down by the local police, The Rolling Stones retired back at what is now called The Fort Harrison hotel. Later that night as Bill Wynam will say, Richards laid down Satisfaction. Keith says it was written in London but others including Bill Wynam say that Satisfaction was written in Clearwater.
