Crow bar for shows not a drinkery
I think the new tenants will do a good job even though nothing is announced beyond the fact they intend to have a restaurant/bar business take over both locations.. With the Herlocher folks stating that the building will not be torn down and rebuild, the feel and atmosphere of the location should remain pretty decent.. Lets be honest..the Skeller was a fun joint, no doubt, but if you had one bar to go to and only one bar to go to for the rest of your days.. not a whole lot of folks would have chosen the Skeller.. at least I know I would not have.. It is sad that an older establishment is going away but sometimes change is good.. we shall see..
Lets raise the funds and make it a wrestling hangout
I'm sure Spyker is in for $500. Only question is whether the other patrons will let him in, or if he'll have to sit outside, looking down through the windows, like he has to at practice. So let's play this idea forward..... the board raises money to buy the Skeller. Then we host the first ever PA Fight Night in our new basement dive bar and invite all the PA D1 wrestling coaches. There are a bunch of them so it would be a packed house with coaches, media and fans. Cael decides this is beneath him so he sends Nico in his place. Nico attends and delivers an F-bomb laced tirade in front of the media.... This definitely moves the needle from 'having fun' to 'having a BLAST!'
Don't frequent the college bar scene anymore, though have fond memories of the Skeller starting over 40 years ago. Initials are on one of the tables somewhere!! Hope it "survives" this situation with no changes. Didn't realize some of the historical facts...pretty cool.

Correct, senior on Main Campus, 1977. Mrs. Roar appeared in 1981. And your "pegging" isn't too far off...spent more time studying than hitting the bar scene. It was weekends only on occasion, or Wednesday night oldies at the Saloon when I could. Hit all the bars noted in this thread, also the Brewery, for Suzie Wong's egg rolls, and a beer...not nearly as much as I'm sensing from others in this thread...as far as hitting the bars, even now .Never would have pegged you as an inscriber . . . Those must have been pre-Mrs. Roar days.
Strongly suggest, no driving and drinking...seriously. Can't help myself, safety and health is a thing with me.got 8:30 reservation for spats tonight. Trying to get to town early to do some shopping and break a glass at the skeller for old times sake.
Ill try to get some 3" binder material to report back.
You misunderstood. The bottle opener is a tip for the waitress. You are lucky you got out alive.I wasn't a student but went to a lot of football games the 1980s and stayed over for the night for the bar scene.
Remember the free gift at the Skeller if got a case of Rolling Rock ponys.
A bottle opener.
I'd like to know how many people have whacked their head on the pipe going down the stairs at the Phyrst.
Seems to me they had a bar band called Phyrst Family.? Did a lot of sing along 60s and 70s songs.
Anyone know if they still play at Phyrst.?
Spent a few nights at 4am having breakfast at the diner. 82-85 for me. I'm not old like some people.Heard today that Ye Olde College Diner might close too. Grilled sticky's, 2:00am or thereabouts, 1974 through 1978. Local staple!! Anyone remember Gus's Cheesesteaks??
Queen Bee used to sing there on Sunday Nights. Good times after a hard weekend of drinking.Just breaking balls. The only times I went there were for bar tours, beer selection was good...I think. Dont remember bands there.
If I was doing basement bars, it was Dark horse, Skeller or the Phyrst. In college I was in a different bar scene than I would be now. I think I put a floor on the MBNA building courtesy of the former G-Man and Big Easy. Tall Red Bull and Stoly Raz was like a drug starting thursday and ending Saturday.
RU post game we stopped in the Phyrst, skeller, cafe, adams apple, grill & Pickles. Reminding me that Im as good once as I ever was.
When the buildings where being sold, no potential buyers where allowed to look at current leases. The Skeller has been signing 1 year leases since the 80's. The current crop of buildings being sold goes up and includes the Chinese Restaurant. Those business have been working on multiple year leases. I have heard there where some rumblings about selling the name Skeller but that as well fell through. Sounds like to hard headed business men not able to negotiate decent terms for both parties. In the end, fans of the Skeller and Spatz lose out. Personally, I like the Skeller (maybe not as much while in college) but I still walked in every time I was up. I proposed to my wife on the nittany lion, then went straight to the Skeller for a shot. 16 years later we had our last drink in there in December. So we had our 1 more. That pretty much covers it. They should have negotiated on a new lease before buying the property. If they couldn't come to terms don't buy the property. However, no matter who the buyer ended up being sounds like the Skeller and Spats were going away in any case.

I have bought plenty of apt buildings in my life. It makes zero sense to not allow the leases to be viewed. How can you verify income? It sounds like this deal was guided in one directiin from the beginning.
Loved Tonya Brown, may she rest in peace...Queen Bee used to sing there on Sunday Nights. Good times after a hard weekend of drinking.
Can't say I have and agree with you. Giving you first hand information from 1 of the store owners in this deal. Not suggesting the deal was right or wrong. Only thing I know is I'm losing a place that I have some very good memories in like so many of us on the board.I have bought plenty of apt buildings in my life. Maybe. That would certainly be ideal, but the buyer's realtor should be able to assess the commercial rental market anyway.100% agree. Anyone that would even consider buying a commercial building without looking at the lease or leases is well, I'd like to be kind, but that is just idiotic.

Good chance the realtor doubles as the property manager for comparable downtown bldgs, thus has access to those leases to "survey the market."
If you view it as a long term buy, and you have enough money to belong to or join the Downtown State College oligarchy, then an initial period of suboptimal revenue probably isn't a no go.

You guys have local breweries in town?
