OT- Snake bites

I was golfing yesterday with my BIL and dad. I was helping my BIL look for his errant tee shot when I heard him scream behind me. I turn around to see him doing a dance and a 6’ black snake slithering away.
I don’t care for snakes, so I kinda made a grunting noise as I asked him, “Did he scare you?” He shouted “He bit my leg!”

Sure enough you could see the bite mark on his calf. He wasn’t sure if he stepped on it or not. He never saw it before he felt its fangs.

Anyone else ever get bit or know someone who was bit by a snake? I’ve had lots of encounters with them but this was a first.

Fortunately for your friend Black snakes do not have fangs they have backward facing teeth. The best way to deal with any snake bite is not get one. If you're in PA, the two venomous snakes you have to worry about are Copperheads and Rattlesnakes. Copperheads will bite you out of pure meanness and at least Rattle snakes will mostly warn you they are there, usually but not always. You can get an infection from non-venomous snake bites so hydrogen peroxide in that instance is your friend. Thankfully reptiles cannot get rabies.

if you search X, you'll find about 20 of those snake/golf pranks. In a few the victim gets hurt trying to get away. I'd never do anything like this but they sure are funny.

I used to place rubber snakes throughout the house.
Wife finally got tired of getting "surprised" and threw them away.
Still married, 32 years.

Black snakes are not poisonous, so I'm told, nevertheless I'm staying away. Here in FL, just a few days ago, one at about two feet was crawling across our patio, set moth balls out to keep them away, also used moth balls for the toad problem, did nothing.

Black snakes are very valuable in terms of their role in rodent control. They are constrictors and will eat mice and rats. Farmers would purposely catch them and put them in their corn cribs and other grain storage areas to help control rodents. But the bite could easily get infected as puncture wounds are the most difficult to disinfect.

You forgot one of the poisonous snakes. The massasauga is also poisonous.

This will sound strange but my MIL sprinkled cayenne pepper to keep snakes off the porch in Florida and she says it worked. 🤷‍♂️
