OT: Suggestions for things to see & do in Portland area?

Multnomah Falls is great. Less than an hour drive from the city and a nice 30 minute hike to the top.

Spent 6 days in Portland a couple of years ago.

Day 1 Columbia river gorge
Day 2 Drive to the coast
Day 3 - Drive down to wine country
Day 4 - Mt Hood.

All were easy day trips with plenty of time to spend at each. Made it back to Portland in time for a nice dinner out. We stayed at The Nines in Portland which was very nice and walked to every restaurant.
So the good news is that 1, 2, and 4 are already planned, as are longer trips to Crater Lake and Bend. I'm looking for more stuff to do right in the city and immediate surroundings vs. more day trips.

THIS. I was going to suggest looking for "Brunch Village" so you can stand in line all day for marionberry pancakes.

...Or the nice restaurant where, before you order chicken, you can ask the waitress for the chicken's birth certificate, and documentation (with photos) of the chicken's happy life growing up on a beautiful farm.
These sound like legit Austin restaurants! :D

Tgar's restaurants suggestions are all very good. Apizza Sholls and Pok Pok also very good.
If you give me more specifics on what you like, I can give you some more suggestions.
If you don't have a place to stay already, my neighbors have a nice Air BnB that is separate from their house (1BR), in a great neighborhood close to downtown.
Feel free to PM me as well.

Oh, and this...

Thanks for the Airbnb offer, I'm already setup with a place to stay. As for food I try to get whatever is good in the area. For example, I love Italian food but wouldn't expect Portland to be known for that, instead I focus on that in the northeast. I've heard there's lots of Thai in Portland so I'll likely check that out, as well as popular food trucks and I'm always a fan of a good steakhouse. I definitely plan to hit some breweries and craft cocktail bars.

Look at the link I included. EEM is a thai/bbq fusion restaurant. I actually haven't been able to get there yet, but it is getting great reviews. And has very good cocktails. Pok Pok is the other big thai place, but there are plenty of average to very good mom and pop type places too.
For steakhouse, Tgar was right on - Laurelhurst Market. Plenty of brewries - but research their specialties first.

For walking/shopping/eating - explore SE Division st (from 25th to 35th), NE Alberta St (15th to 35th), NW 21st St, North Mississippi (good food carts at intersection of Skidmore St), and SW Hawthorne (30th to 50th).

Lastly - a nice was to explore the city .... http://library.oregonmetro.gov/files/trailtramtrolleytrain.pdf

I'm a porter and stout fan so I will focus there. I know Deschutes has a lot of those but I will stop there in Bend instead of in Portland.

As of this past Sat, EVERYONE is a fan of Stout! And, in time, I think we all will be a fan of Porter, too!

We were going to take one of the tours that goes underground and shows some of the shanghai tunnels. After talking with everyone we met, we decided they were pretty much a rip off with little factual information. More made up stories.

I'll throw in my 2 cents after several trips to the Pacific NW.

One night in Portland was fine for us. Last year we loved the Oregon Brewers Festival. You won't see a beer fest like that on the east coast.

For the most we liked Portland, but they have a serious problem with homeless. The public parks looked like camp grounds. It was bad compared to cities on the east coast.

If doing the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood, I highly recommend spending a night in Hood River. You can go clockwise or counterclockwise to reach your goal. Hood River is a great town on the river with many solid breweries. I really liked pFriem Brewery.

If you can make it down to the Yachats area on the coast, do it. Cape Perpetua is one of the nicest spots on any coast in North America.

Mount Saint Helens is so worth it on a nice day.

Heading to MSH from Portland on the west side:

Going to MSH from Hood River on the west side. Drive is much more dicey.

Crater Lake is a hike from Portland, but awesome on a sunny day.
