probably the most underrated Kubrick film. A cinematic masterpiece that gets unfairly maligned for having such a powerful first 45 minutes. Of course, the back half of the film cannot hold a candle to R Lee Ermey's toxic mania. But such a brilliant examination of dark humor of the Vietnam conflict.

I remember watching this film a few months before I entered boot camp. We were still under the old "Vietnam era" rules. Fun times.

"this is my rifle this is my gun. this is for fighting this is for fun."
"it looks like the best part of you fell from the crack of your mom's @ss and wound up as a stain on the mattress."
"Texas?! Holy $hit only queers and steers come from Texas and you don't look like the latter."

there are at least 20 brilliant quotes from Gunny Hartman alone . . .

Best opening scene of a war movie, all-time?

1) R Lee Ermey's monologue in Full Metal Jacket
2) George C Scott's speech in Patton
3) Omaha Beach landing in Saving Private Ryan

Whenever I watch any of the 3 above, I think for sure it is that one, until I think about or see one of the other 2.

If you want to test her bravery as well as her love for you, take her to a showing of A Clockwork Orange. That may be Kubrick's ultimate masterpiece. Reviled on its release as a glorification of sex and violence (ironically, he got death threats for that supposed reason), it is instead a profound meditation (like the Anthony Burgess book, which it follows closely) on what in classical philosophy is called the Free Will Theodicy: Can man be considered good without free will?

TRUE STORY! I dated a very lovely and intelligent woman at Penn State for a few months. I thought she was "the one". Then I took her to see Clockwork Orange during a special screening at The Forum. BIG mistake, lol

followed up by my next big mistake in choosing the next film, an art house darling known as The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover . . . in the words of Rick Perry: "oops"

The one major liberty the movie took was the rifle in bed and live ammo that Pyle had. In reality, never would have happened, all ammo accounted for before and after shoots.

Best part? "Choke yourself".

You really need to reconsider your idea of a "date movie"! Or is it a "screening" tool?

If the date with your G/F goes well, please remember to give her the common courtesy of a reach around...

(just kidding)

Probably not. She may have to explain a few things to you. Some of the most 'worldly knowledgeable' women I've met and know were from small towns... and many with very strict religious upbringings.

Tener, you are probably better off without her, but "The Cook, The Thief, ..." may have been a bit over the line, even for "The One".

What a FVCKING shock...yet, ANOTHER war thread. And, you're taking your girlfriend?

That's the difference between you people and me: you take your gf's/wives to WAR movies; I take my ladies salsa dancing.

And to think the (ahem) High and Mighty LionJim has "me" on ignore. You can't make this sh1t up if you tried.

I'm giving you an ironic "like"

Explains why we don't see much of Modine anymore, unless he has other problems besides being a bad actor.

I'd call it romance in that context, though it'd be more believable if the boys were at least half-whacked.
wasn't he just in 'Strange (er?) Things" which got get reviews? I loved Vision Quest!
