Played tennis this morning with my PSU friend.

He reminded me of today, being the anniversary day.
Back then he drove there in his '61 Chevy with a couple of co-eds.
He recently ran down the e-mail address of that weekends girl friend.
He e-mailed her a few days ago.
No response yet.

A fun college road trip memory for him.

FC anyway...
Despite all the organizers' troubles, the Woodstock Festival got started nearly on time. On Friday evening, August 15, Richie Havens got up on stage and officially started the Festival. Sweetwater, Joan Baez, and other folk artists also played Friday night.
so to re live....

Watch some of the videos and notice how thin every one is...er.....was. And that is true of other old concert clips, old western movies, even old family Super8s.

People were much thinner before junk food, fast food, high fructose corn syrup and more. Thats a big reason why our healthcare is so expensive...terrible lifestyle habits!

the thing I notice is almost 100% of the men, have on long pants. Very few in shorts, and some that are, you can tell were cut offs.

I just turned 75 last Saturday (Verifying my street crede) . What stood out to me in looking at the old videos and photos, are how clean cut most people were. No body tats, very few men with facial hair . A lot of attractive women, who didn't look like they had been camping in the rain.

The reason Richie Havens led off the concert was that he was the only artist there. Everyone else was stuck in traffic, which is why they had to get the helicopter.
Yup. Iron Butterfly couldn't make it and they sent a telegram asking for a helicopter from LaGuardia - they were sent a response, which if you look at the first letter of each sentence, spelled out "F*ck You" o_O

And in a reminder that getting old can be a bitch:

There's that and they also had less entertainment options that involved sitting on their asses all day.

Not sure if this is true or not, but heard that a bunch of players on the 1969 team were looking to travel to Woodstock for the concert, and when Joe found out about it, he changed the practice schedule to keep them from going. Their first game was against Navy on Sept 20, so its not like they were in the throes of game preparation, but would have been in fall camp, or close to fall camp, anyway.

My parents live about 20 miles from Bethel, NY in NEPA. I went to the museum a few years ago. I thought it was fantastic. Looks like thousands are heading that way this weekend.

Very good documentary currently on Netflix about Woodstock. A special moment in history, that will never be repeated.

That’s a beautiful area and I agree about the museum. Very well done. In the recollections book I read a few regretful stories of people who got really close to the concert - some within 2/3 miles - and turned around because of the traffic and weather report. Oh man!

You look up that bowl from where the stage was and it really is a fantastic natural ampitheater

It started with Richie Havens....

By the way tickets were $8/day. I believe all the performers played for free except Hendrix, who was paid $3000.

They were paid. Some demanded the cash before going onstage. It was a financial debacle for the organizers at first, but the cash has been rolling in ever since

The museum is great. It's also a great concert venue. Mostly lawn seats and they let you bring a cooler. You have to rent chairs.

They talk about that in the Woodstock Saturday YouTube. I’ll link tomorrow

Cool. I’m going to check out the Netflix doc tonight. The 40th anniversary doc was really good and convinced me to go to the museum - though I was a mere tot of 22 months when the concert went off.

In the 40th anniversary doc, the camera lingered on an absolutely gorgeous girl shown about to get on a truck and leave the concert site. I don’t think she was famous - just some girl. I’ve always wondered what became of her. (No pics)
