OT: Tom Seaver has dementia.

Wow. That’s terrible. One of the best ever on the mound and a great ambassador for the game. Sad. Personally dealing with an aunt with Parkinson’s and Demetria and am too familiar with the loss and sadness

In those days the Mets had an extremely talented and young starting rotation of Seaver, Koosman, Ryan and Gentry.

Ryan was not part of it. It was Jon Matlack instead. At the time, Ryan was a .500 pitcher at best. He would strike out 14 and walk 12 in the same game. He was expendable and that is why they traded him then. Of course that trade came back to haunt them down the road.

Bob Murphy & Lindsey Nelson, what a pair! I bet I was at Shea 20+ times in '69, and countless times before that. Add the Jets & the Knicks both making noise then and I was in my glory, but who wasn't as a NYC kid in the 60s :)

Rheingold!

Lol. Yep, official beer of the Mets. My beer is Rheingold the dry beer. Yankees had Ballantine.
I grew up in Brooklyn and was a 10 yr old during that championship filled year for NYC. Would never imagine at that time how few championships our teams would win since (other than the evil empire in da Bronx, and even they sucked for many years). I thought winning like that was how it was supposed to be. 1986 helped a bit as Mets win WS and we win the MNC. I wonder if I’ll ever see either again before I die.

Terrible news! My heart goes out to Tom Seaver and his family. I hope the Wilpons do the right thing and replace Jackie Robinson with Tom Seaver at Citi Field. I have nothing against JR but he was not a NY Met, Tom Seaver was a the Ultimate Met.

Indeed. My favorite and greatest Met of all time. It was a shame that Dick Young pretty much forced Seaver out of town.

Here’s my top 3 NY Mets ever. 1. Tom Seaver 2.Gary Carter 3.Mike Piazza. I still believe Yogi made an error playing Seaver in game 6 and Jon Matlack in game 7 in the 1973 World Series.

I think you’re wrong, Matlack was later. Yeah, Ryan wasn’t accomplished then. I wasn’t referring to their performances then, just the sheer talent. The four of them were within a few years age of each other.. Gentry was a disappointment but he showed signs of greatness. The other three are obvious, obviously. They were the starters before the ‘69 team.

I thought it was Ballantine beer, the beer with the ten minute head. Have you timed it lately?

Sad news. Prayers to his family

Question for those who saw them both in their prime (I saw them both later in their careers):

Seaver or Carlton .... who ya got?

Carlton was more dominant, I think, though you’d take either one every 4-5 start and smile.

The rotation of my youth - Koufax and Carlton, Seaver and Gibson. If it was a 5 man rotation, then I’d add the Dominican Dandy as well.

I am so saddened by this news of his dementia diagnosis. Tom Seaver was truly my idol as a boy and a young man. I was influenced by him perhaps more than any other sportsman of my (our) time. I knew he was having difficulties, but for the family to announce this and that he won't be making any more public appearances means it must be fairly severe at this point.

This season the Mets will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the '69 Miracle Mets World Championship and I know Tom will be honored in a special way, but it won't be quite the same without him being there.

We all grow old, but it pains me to see this great athlete and competitor suffer in this way. My prayers go out to Tom, his sweetheart and long time wife Nancy, as well as his family.

Tom was nicknamed "The Franchise" and if anyone deserved that name, it was George Thomas Seaver.

Edit: Sorry guys. I didn't see that this news was already posted below. @Tom McAndrew

Matlack was not on the '69 team. The top 3 were Seaver, Koosman, and Gentry. All 3 were special. Gentry's career was ended not long after by an arm injury.

Yeah, I fixed it above. the 4th starter was Jim McAndrews if I'm not mistaken.
A damn shame that Tom didn't play his whole career for the Mets. External factors came into play. I remembercrying the day they traded him.

Quick story. Was at Shea the night Dick Young died. They put the news up on the outfield scoreboard between innings. The crowd rose for a standing ovation as we saw the news.

Could somebody refresh my memory about Dick Young’s part of Seaver going to Cinci?
