OT: took in a showing of Peter Jackson's WWI documentary 'They Shall Not Grow Old'

I saw it yesterday as well. I picked up tickets for my parents as well as my visiting brother who is in the film industry. We were amazed at the whole production and the 30 min. documentary covering the work to make the film was equally outstanding. I really hope they decide to do future screenings.

Which has completed its scheduled theatrical run but made sufficient money that (I suspect) you'll have another opportunity to catch it if you haven't.

And IMHO given the opportunity you should catch it, because it's a truly amazing piece.
Same. And loved it, although I didn’t stay for the extra st the end. Regretted it after the fact.

Read last night that it’s being scheduled for re-release in major markets in February.

Just curious if you saw it in 3-D or standard format? And if you think it had a significant impact on the viewing in experience?

I saw it in 3D. It was remarkable. It really made the experience come to life - at times it was like you were watching the war take place from a few feet away. I felt at times like I was there watching the war but somehow removed from it, like I was behind a wall of glass or some other such barrier. It’s hard to explain.

I live in MD and every theatre I checked was sold out for every show time. Hope that means they bring it back for at least one more tour.

Thanks for the post.

If you get a chance - see it. If you have the option - see it in 3D. With ad popular as it’s been I would think it will either make another theatrical run or go to on demand, Netflix, Amazon, maybe even PBS in the near future.

Was in 2 theaters in Reading. One theater sold out both showings. Managed to get a ticket at the IMAX. Not shown in 3D but an amazing experience nevertheless.

Every movie is garbage then they put out a good one and it's a limited engagement. No wonder I've only seen star wars and blade runner in the last few years. And Dunkirk which was disappointing and louder than the Who in 1975.

I think it will but you’ll miss out on the 3D experience, which really made the footage come to life.
Totally agree. Very remarkable experience seeing it on a large screen and 3D. I'm usually not a big fan of 3D effect in movies, but this was done well and obviously no gimmicky filming to overemphasize the 3D. It just gives it a depth and perspective that makes it seem even more real. I took my kids (22 & 18) and they both really liked it. I liked and understand the rationale for only using the interviews with former soldiers as the narration, but it does lose some of the perspective on the particular events if you don't already know the history. For example, there is fairly well-known footage of a company of the Lancashire Fusiliers sitting in a sunken road just before attacking the German lines on the first day of the Somme:

As Jackson points out in the making of piece that followed the movie, many of those men were going to die in the next 30 minutes or so. Even if you already know that bit of history, it's such a difference in the connection you feel with those soldiers when you see them clearly in color and often in close-up - as they were able to zoom in on individuals and groups, which is hard to do with grainy, over or underexposed newsreel-type footage (you see a couple of seconds of it beginning at 1:48 in the trailer in the OP).

Speaking of the "making of" piece, definitely worth seeing if you go to a future screening or it becomes available. Lots of interesting bits about the production and the material, such as Jackson apparently has a personal collection of enormous old artillery pieces!!

How did you hear about it? I only heard about it yesterday, the day of the showing, when they interviewed the director on DC Fox 5 and they mentioned it was already sold out arount here.

I saw it posted on this board after someone saw it on Dec 17. I got lucky that a theater in my area sold out two shows yesterday and added two more.

Dunkirk was bad, wasn't it. Was so hard to follow and the "score" played loudly then entire film. If you didn't know the story ahead of time it wouldn't have made sense at all. Just my humble opinion.

To me it seemed like the setting was a strange dreamscape that was much too small. Like everything that happened happened on a beach the size of a football field. With the Wehrmacht one block away but no 88s screaming down. Just a weird film. And it was blazing loud. The Blade Runner 2049 preview was piercingly loud. It was too much. And I'm a nut who listens to music WAY too loud every day.

This guy says that if it’s too loud, you’re too old.

I wasn't a huge fan of Dunkirk and I like war movies. Just didn't do much for me. I would say it was average. I look at that as a movie that could have been really good if it had a little more going for it as it just wasn't that exciting to me in the end.

Agree. Dunkirk's plane video was awesome. I also enjoyed the bombs landing on the beaches. Opening scene was pretty good. Other than that, not a ton of greatness.

Took in a 3D showing last night. Extremely well done. As others stated, @ times you felt you were right there.

Brave men, enduring those conditions (mud, cold, dysentery, rats, meager rations, etc) in the trenches, running headlong into enemy machine gun and artillery fire. Those who made it home, find an unappreciative civilian population, who didn't want give them jobs.

The youth, so many young men under the legal age of 19 to serve who lied about their ages. To hear the honesty in their voices of the realities and fears of trench warfare.

The coloration really showed the youth as well as the emotions of going into their first battles.

Well with the time to sit, listen and see!!

Just saw this incredible film. My God. It was brutal, riveting....brilliant in every way. My wife covered her eyes a number of times but I could not turn away. Anything I say will not do it justice. If you have an opportunity to see it, don't pass it up. See it in a theater if you can to get the full effect, and stay to watch the extra half hour of how it was done. Absolutely one of the best films I have ever seen.

I went to see the movie as well. I saw it in 3D........although I'm not sure my eyes work with 3D. The movie certainly makes you take stock of what courage truly is, while realizing how comfortable our life is today. The movie, to me, showed how resilient mankind can be ......the way so many accepted what was in front of them and continued to push forward. Seeing and hearing about the artillery and what the soldiers experiences were like with the Germans they encountered were highlights for me.

I was in the Army but never saw combat. I've talked with those who have been under fire and they speak of that special bond that joins them to the others in their unit. Seeing this film helps bring home what they are talking about. Facing death with another truly does make you brothers.

My favorite uncle was at D-Day. The National Guard unit from Warren, PA suffered 80+% casualties in WWII. This is why I tear up singing our National Anthem at football games. I think of these mostly boys, bleeding and dieing. There is no greater love than to lay down your life for another. We are because they were.

Remember that it's a documentary, so it doesn't pull at the heartstrings very much, but it's a fascinating look at life for British infantrymen on the Western Front. And the 30-minute description at the movie's end by director Peter Jackson on how they restored the film is worthwhile, too.

I didn't even pay much attention to the finer points of the film restoration and colorization because I was so engrossed in the stories of the Western Front veterans.

Although I am not a fan of most of Peter Jackson's films (LOTR series & Kong = bad), I would very much like to see this.
