OT: Travel & Food ideas and advice

Veggies ain't food. Veggies are what food eats.

I'm no vegan=I'm craving a ribeye now, but I'm over 60 and don't wear corrective lenses-not even cheaters and my mom's side was filled macular degeneration.

Most of them got it slowly-but my Great Uncle-who survived Tarawa and Hiroshima clean up, got up one morning and couldn't see.

To see that man crushed from his loss of independence scared the hell out of me-I talked to my doc and he recommended lots of green leafy stuff like a gorilla. Next doc said add fish oil. I have cut back on spinach because of oxalates.

Everything in moderation.

Also, no BP or diabetes meds.

Now if they'd just get me back under 230...

Costco pizza slices in Macungie, you cheapskate.

Macungie is a little SW of Allentown. A township with a poat office, not a town.

Excellent Mexican restaurant there -- Casa Catrina. Much better than the standard Gringo-ized Mex. Would do well in a border state. This would be my choice. Gst the ceviche tostadas. You're welcome.

Neighboring Emmaus is a decent small town, can find something there. Alternately, a lot of strip mall type stuff on Hamilton Blvd.

EDIT: for those in the western half of the state, Emmaus = eh-MAY-us.

Get a new doctor -- preferably one who doesn't think a gorilla is green and leafy.

Well this Bear Creek Mountain resort wasn't cheap so I'd like to save a buck somehow. Lol

Ok ...just served the salad at the wedding. The house dressing was good. Maybe there's hope that the main course will be good. Ha

If the meal turned out to be good, there's still Costco hot dogs or pizza for breakfast. (Also, that Costco has possibly the cheapest gas in the state.)

Though the Mexican place has brunch, and it's probably better/cheaper than the hotel.

what no mashed potatoes?
Blaze is a nice big T-Bone and PJ Duke a Porterhouse. How much meat can you eat. Those two days the craving. Now if you want a week balanced meal, you could use a nice stuffed baked patato and some Broccoli. Sure, let's upgrade Bo and Jax to those.

Ever been to Don Shula's?

They have a 42 ounce prime Tomahawk.

We should have a new rule for travel discussions. If you ask for help/suggestions and receive some feedback, you must let us know how the trip went and what you enjoyed, so that others may benefit.
Hopefully I'm giving some good feedback. Lol. Wedding was nice tho. The food not so great. I'll fill you in on my Costco trip in the morning. Lol.

Received a Solo Stove (Pizza) Pi oven (propane) as a gift; (nice gift).
Have now baked pizzas 3 times, getting better each time. That was not difficult as the first try was a big failure. I'm now using a little bit of corn meal on the bamboo peeler, and that was a big help. Anyone have tips/suggestions or go to recipes they'd like to share?
Anyone tried the frozen pizza dough available at Aldi's? I've just used the dry mix packs for dough thus far and they are pretty easy. Thanks in advance.

I have an Ooni pizza oven so it's not quite the same but I have used the aldi dough a couple times. It's good for store bought but making my own is definitely better. I cold proof my dough for 72 hours so the aldi is nice for last minute if I didn't plan ahead and need something quick.

Trader Joe's has very good dough and pizza sauce. Use semolina to keep the dough from sticking to the peel. It like the dough is riding on little ball bearings and the pizza slides off the peel with the toppings intact. Oh, get an infrared thermometer so that you know what the temperature is in your oven. I usually cook at right around 900F

BTW, it's 8 am on 11/13 here in Kyoto, and so what if it's 14 hrs ahead, WTH is he waiting for?
Enjoy Japan! Recently discovered some very attractive flight prices, and have been thinking about pulling the trigger.... PS--can you talk to Ono about extending his stay 3 years or so?

Thanks! I'll have lots of notes when I return (after Thanksgiving) but for now:

DO IT!

Japan is awesome, and the yen is hovering at an historic low vs the dollar.

But: Fly into Tokyo Haneda, or either Osaka airport. Don't fly into Narita unless it's such a ridiculous airfare difference to make up for that hassle.

Narita is a no-go under almost any circumstance. It's horrible. Enjoy your stay.

I was recently in Kyoto. I recommend you get over to the Aritsugu knife shop and get a new kitchen knife. How often do you get to shop in a knife store that opened in 1560?

My youngest son just returned from a 2-week trip to Japan. Not really work related, just a vacation. His Japanese is very limited, and he did say that he was really ready to come home and that he missed being able to converse freely with anyone that he saw, but he loved it and is already talking about a return trip for next year. He went with a co-worker who is Japanese, but was only with him for a handful of days, so he spent most of his time on his own and still enjoyed it a lot.

My son just returned and said that he did purchase a knife or knives, but I'm not sure where he got them.
