OT: WaWa vs The Field

Maybe Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives should do a convenience store special.
They have been to a number of gas stations that serve food. Not convenience stores, though they may have started out that way. Typically immigrants who bought a gas station and sold some of their native food, and had to expand into a full-blown restaurant due to popularity.

We also have Rudy’s Country Store, which is a full-blown BBQ restaurant that also happens to have gas pumps. It’s actually one of the better BBQ places around here. Here's the one in Allen, Texas, home of one of the GOAT wrestlers:
Rudy’s

Now Rudy’s is a some good eats! I used to travel to Texas for work and made sure I have a few BBQ sandwiches served with white bread and pickles.
Rudy's is basically the Olive Garden of Texas BBQ. It's everywhere, it's reasonably good, and you know what to expect. Better exists in most locations, but if you can't find (or don't have the time/energy to find) better, you'll still get a good meal.

The added twist with Texas BBQ: often the better places serve limited quantities per day, and close when they sell out. So dinner may not be an option -- and if you don't get there early enough for lunch, they can sell out while you're waiting in line to get in. Rudy's is a good standby.

With threads now discussing Bigfoot, pennies, Texas food choices, dead bears, etc. I'm now wondering why the OP of this thread felt it necessary to point out that this one was OT.

Kwik Trip in MN has a great hot food bar.

Caesy's has fantastic gas station pizza.

My town has 2 of each... Just under 6000 people lol.

I'm glad this topic came up. As an out-of-towner who never lived in PA but who's family lives in Central PA, when I come into town, I want a great hoagie. Sadly, Troy's in State College closed. That was my favorite spot for their Italian. But I'm very limited in my knowledge and experiences. I don't know much of anything about where else to go, as much of the family has dispersed, and the ones that do remain say Jersey Mike's, which I already got in Chicago. So where else should I go when in town?? Wegman's? Sheetz??

Jersey Mike's is grossly overpriced. Wegman's is a far better deal--despite how badly downhill (in general) the Wegman's in State College has gone since opening.

Whenever I hear the Yinzer Sheetz crowd arguing with the “Wudder” WaWa crowd I steer clear because it is a clear indication of two groups of people who have given up on life and will fight to the death, if need be, over the superior gas station food.

Can't beat the free tire air at Sheetz!!!

The Danny's Favorite at Wegman's is an awesome sub. The Wegman's oil on it is a must. I had one 3 weeks ago and ate the whole damn large sub in one sitting. I was in a food coma the rest of the night.

Not that I actually care but without context this post is right out of no where. I assume you are responding to a specific post but you didn;t quote it and I have no desire to spend the time going thru the whole thread to find it, assuming said post is even in this thread. :rolleyes:o_O

Not familiar with the sub shops in State College but wished I could help. Sheetz is ok for a cheap sub but you sound like you're looking for something more so I wouldnt recommend them.
Just swing down to lock haven we will take care of you. Plenty of places with great subs around here. Or hoagies if that's what you want to call them lol.

Oh the shame in this post! ;) Actually, I’m impressed that so many of you are coming out of the closet as gas station food eaters (GSFEs). I started to look for a GSFE support group to share with my friends here, but apparently the GSFE stigma has significantly abated in recent years and gas stations are making legitimate inroads  in the fast food market.

I even found articles providing helpful info about gas station nutrition for traveling athletes:
https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Taekwondo/Features/2015/April/09/Traveling-Athletes-and-Gas-Station-Nutrition

Some people claim you can lose weight following a “gas station food” diet (maybe Cenzo should consider this before he balloons back up to 250+):

We don’t have WaWa, Sheetz, or Rutter’s in Texas. At least not that I’ve seen. We do have Buc-ee’s, which is definitely much, much more than a gas station. It’s huge by gas station standards and has all kinds of fresh, prepared, and packaged foods, along with tons of jerky, fudge, snacks, drinks, outdoor gear, and Texas themed souvenirs. I know people that plan meals at Buc-ee's.

So basically a sheetz

It was in the OP. OP said WaWA is like Paris Hilton and Iowa, famous for being famous. As if Iowa accomplished nothing and became famous.

My Sheetz story goes back almost thirty years. It was mentioned in earlier posts about about coffee and beef jerky. That is my story.

Mother in law rented a place for a couple years in Virginia Beach or Outerbanks area. I would leave Western Pennsylvania for the vacation around midnight and drive through the night with the wife and young kids.

On this one trip, when I hit northern Virginia, I needed gas and saw a brand new Sheetz. Didn't know Sheetz expanded that far. I never drink coffee as I always was a tea drinker. As such, drinking coffee and not being use to it would upset my stomach. Having a weaker stomach, lack of sleep also upsets my system and stomach. After getting gasoline, I went in the store to get coffee. Prior to that, my eldest son around 10 years old awoken and wanted to also go in the store. We were on vacation, sure. Inside he decided he wanted some beef jerky. At first I said no, but hell, go ahead beef jerky at 3:30 am, we are on vacation, sure. My mistake was getting some jerky for myself. Hell the coffee (strike 2) will help with lack of sleep ( strike 1) and the jerky ( strike 3) will help me be alert. I was in great shape, life was good. That was until about 10 miles north of Richmond, heading down on 95. I very rarely use public facilities and never ever ever use a rest stop bathroom however I never felt that bad in my life. I didnt slow down pulling into the rest stop as I now knew how the operators at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukushima felt just moments before the shit hit the fan.

Well I made it. I want to belatedly thank the Department of Transportation in Virginia.
I then also realized that my family loved me as after 35 minutes in the rest stop, they were still lovingly waiting in the car and did not leave me. I felt that love only for a moment until I realized I had the car keys with me. After that event, nothing could have been worse for the remainder of the trip, not even staying with the in laws for a week.

You got that right. Certain stations consider the air as a profit center. One place in town costs $1.50 in quarters to fill your air. When I stop at Sheetz to get air, I always buy gas too, or order something inside. I figure they deserve it for providing that public service.

Worked at Rutter's Farm Store as a youth, nearly 50 years ago. They have come a long way. Based in York (I grew up in Hanover), the company had half a dozen or so corner grocery stores in York/Adams counties in the early 70's. Their first store opened in 1968, and I started only a couple years after. Now they are growing fast, and I see them more and more in my travels, the two most obvious for me are Milroy, PA (on 322), and Clark's Ferry, across from the Sheetz, also on 322.

As far as preference though, I have none. Least expensive gas will draw me, as does the free tire air.

@PSUbluTX when at Buc-ee’s please buy the Buc-ee’s brand veggie straws and chips, as well as the new popcorn program kicking off in about 4 months, help a brother out!

My first visit to Buc-ee’s My wife and I went in only needing a bathroom and maybe some coffee, $100 later we left.... though we got some good Christmas gifts.

@pawrestlersintn, per your OT comment, with no wrestling on the radar for quite a while, I agree everything in on topic right now.

I once read a story about the best fried chicken you might never have heard of, Krispy Krunchy in gas stations across the US. The story said some locations will fry anything you bring in, fish, squirrel, whatever. Generally pretty remote locations.

WAWA’s cut fruit is pretty awesome! My brother-in-law, who moved to Arkansas, always stops at WaWa when he comes to visit down at my parents in Delaware, he loves the coffee!

And now, OT to the original post, has anyone ever had a Fluff burger or a Screamer from Tony’s Lunch in Girardville? I need to try them sometime. I have family in the area that say they are great, along with the french fries.

From a strictly food standpoint:

Rutters
Wawa
Sheetz

And I grew up in western, Pa. Sheetz food is trash.

I work for a foodservice manufacturer and I've called on both Wawa and Sheetz for fifteen years. The big difference between the two when it comes to food is that Sheetz has fryers. Wawa only has convection ovens. So if you are looking for a hoagie, go to Wawa. If you are looking for some deep fried goodness, like French fries and mozzarella sticks, go to Sheetz.

Unfortunately, state college doesn’t have a mandatory go-to sandwich shop. RU Hungry is a good stop for subs. We also like Brothers... and Champs has better subs than those posted as well.

MacLanahan’s has always been my go to sandwich/sub joint.

Some recognize Iowa as having 23 championships, some don’t. I know I know... what the NCAA recognizes is the only opinion that matters.

So wait... all those free “MacLananhan’s Power Play” free subs I’ve been passing up was a mistake? I’ve never had. Now I’m looking forward to next hockey season.

Wow that brings back memories. I'm related to some copenhavers from the York and Hanover area. My grandmother lived in queen street for years until that are became too bad to live at her age.

To be fair... I never said any of these had great food... or even good food. They are what they are, gas station food. I was bored outta my mind and started a thread on the first thing that came to my mind. It was this, or the Jonas Brothers (I have a 13yo daughter, so don’t judge).

Gray, you're at 69 posts, not bad. Tell your daughter that as a second career Stagehand, I worked the Jonas Brothers and my job was setting up and tearing down their dressing room. Was going to work the Styles concert but as he's coming in July, my assumption is it could be up in the air, hope I'm wrong.

I got my girlfriends daughter 4 tix for the Harry Styles concert in Pittsburgh for Christmas. It's been a running joke between myself and my girlfriends ex on who is gonna have to take her (and a friend) since shes only 14. I lost since I'm the one that bought the tix and hes been throwing digs at me ever since.
