Which decade was your favorite for music?
I think the 70's saw a refinement of rock, but it also saw the influence of many other types of music into rock and pop music. There was also some truly awful music made during this time, to be honest.
I don't see as much innovation or musicianship now as I did then. A lot of what I hear today seems pretty regurgutative by comparison.

Kind of agree but from about '75 on there was some really good and innovative stuff happening. It just took a while to get to the "main stream".

Rock was about the combination of many unique things:
  • solid state technology
  • cheap reproductions of music
  • stereo
  • worldwide broadcasts
  • Emergence of TV
  • Vietnam War
  • Synthetic Drugs
  • The Pill (leading to more free "love")
The blues of the 50's lead to pop rock using solid state technology in the 60's. So my second choice would be the 60's. But that all was refined with the Moog, distortions, wawa pedals and all of that in the 70's. It ran its course until people lost innovations and we moved to big hair, boy bands and wrap. Seems the first of it was Alice Cooper who really blurred entertainment with music and that led to the dancing and stage shows that accompanied boy bands, big hair in pure entertainers (less artists).

60s by far. Soul Music. The changing of rock. Birth of the stones and Beatles. Real avant garde pop music. The birth of reggae. Amazing garage music.

70s is the worst though. Generic watered down garbage. AM gold crap. Disco. Over production. Sales not soul. The ONLY thing the 70s has going for it, was the birth of Punk rock. Which were a reaction to all of the garbage being produced. Also some good glam music from the 70s as well.

For me, I loved the 70s music ... of course in the 70s I was in my prime music listening years which degenerated into my "country era" followed by my "talk radio era" followed by my "oldies era" followed by my "second talk radio era". Trying to find my "country oldies groove" and fear that it ain't happening.

If you could pick the best 10 year span, it would be 64-74 or thereabouts (imo).

yep..you've got all the bigs peaking in that timeframe: Beatles, Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, Beach Boys, Zeppelin, Boston, Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Black Sabbath, CCR, Doors, Leonard Skynard, ZZ Top, Grateful Dead, Deep Purple, Rush....

70's by far. The era of great guitar players and awesome riffs. My 14 year old son is an emerging guitar player and listens to 70's music almost exclusively.

To criticize any particular era because of the bad music from that era is a mistake in my opinion. Every era has diverse sounds that appeal to diverse audiences. So for me, I took the question as which decade had the best music that I like. I went with the 70s as I think it was the decade where many of my favorites made their best music. I would have the 90s second.
