Out of it for Nixon

He always sort of seemed like a reach to me, I hope we didn't spend too much time on him.

Exactly.
What did CJF really get out of the satelite camps? Not an abundance so far. Hopefully a punter. It's great PR and I believe CJF will get a few great kids from the south as time goes on that will complement his recruiting in the base areas, but the nucleus of our incoming talent will continue to be from PSU's "local" 6 hr drive radius from State College and that's where CJF and his staff will focus. The #1 priority is to DOMINATE THE STATE, and then to kick UM out of NJ......

Yep, think the PSU staff knew for about a week or so now that Nixon was no longer in the running. Last week they started going full court press on Snelson, and then offering 2 other WRs in the past couple of days

Staff will learn the hard way that it's not really worth recruiting Florida at this point. PSU can only make waves in Florida if they are contending for national titles and until then it is a waste of time and resources.

Inclined to agree, but I think the current effort is worth it for two reason: 1) lays a foundation for the futuee; and 2) ya' never know.

I disagree. It takes time to build relationships, particularly in an area where PSU has historically had virtually no presence. The fact that Nixon didn't commit, doesn't mean that Franklin won't be able to persuade a talented player(s) to commit next year or the year after that. You may be correct that there may be a greater chance to get kids from Florida if (hopefully when) PSU contends for BIG and national titles even if he didn't keep working that area in the interim. However, I believe it will be a far easier sales pitch to get those kids then if he keeps working the area in the meantime. Kind of reminds me of Chambers' recruitment of the Philadelphia area; it didn't pay immediate dividends, but you build the relationships first, keep slugging away and eventually it pays off.

Agree - if PSU is going to recruit against OSU and Mich, et al, the staff will have to get more into the South. Looking at the population growth and quality of recruits, the northeast and mid Atlantic states are falling behind - so the South is the place to go.

I guess the South will really rise again.

That's what the last half dozen or so men's basketball coaches thought about Philadelphia, then Pat Chambers came along. I'd say that the distance between Florida and State College is about the same as it is to Columbus. I'm not saying we have the cache to pull in elite Florida talent like we can in PA and mid Atlantic areas today, but it's a process. Once we have relationships with their coaches, and are recruiting the kids for 2 or 3 years, and Penn State gets a few more wins each year, then I think we can compete with other big time northern schools.

Have to plant the seeds though. If it starts with a player or two over a couple of years, it's worth it. Dipping into the satellite camp experiment was not meant to produce instant results. PSU has not been recruiting nationally enough.

Agree. Hiring assistants with southern ties is the only way to go. Hiring these folks from the midwest ain't going to work!

Agree it's all about building relationships and the optics of having kids from Florida interested for months, as well as the demonstrated good faith of CJF having just this one WR offer stand alone until the end. Invest in the future.

PSU never built the kind of history and connections to the Fla market. For years the insular recruiting of PA, NJ and to some degree OH was enough. Now with OSU getting the top recruits in Ohio, Pitt presence in WPA and Ohio and competing in NJ. PSU has to hire coaches with deeper Fla connections. Pitt has a history of recruiting Florida and have many ex players and connections. Also three Pitt coaches have coached in Florida. If you want to recruit there, hire coaches who have connections to the HS coaches and are trusted. Then even at that, you have to work your a** off to get a recruit to come north. Great area but lot of competition for talent.

agree. nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I recall Michael Timpson being from Georgia and I'm sure we've had some impact players from Florida but at the moment my mind is drawing a blank.

Timpson was from Florida, as was Rich McKenzie.

Ole Miss must have one helluva bag man.

And there are other attractions.

Joe once said: "Penn State is NOT for everyone". Not sure why he was interested in PSU given the schools he is now "interested" in. They are all good football schools.

I would be very happy if we got Snelson
Under Armour All-American, and very impressive offer sheet.

Wouldn't be needed right away with the depth we currently have at the WR spot, and would have a year to RS.

I believe he was scheduled for a visit to UMD this weekend? Anyone know if that is still happening?

Don't know about UMD, but I watched his film and here's what I got:
Pros:
Not afraid to go over the middle
Makes difficult catches in traffic, frequently
Hard to bring down when he has the ball
Shifty in the open field, with possibly deceiving speed
Con:
Does not high point the football downfield
Not sure about the competition I saw in those clips
Routes looked very simple only saw seems, fly routes, and drags/slants

And there are other attractions.

That attraction has been there for a long, long time. There is more to this story than just fine looking young women. All of a sudden, Ole Miss is a playa?

Nixon seems like another Polk, which is certainly a good thing for him. As far as "need" goes, PSU is stacked at WR and if we could afford to lose out on one position this cycle, it's definitely WR. I'll gladly take Sneldon but if that doesn't work out I'll roll with Blacknall, Charles, Godwin, Hamilton, Johnson, Polk and Tompkins.

Obviously stacked now, but looking ahead 3 years to 2018 Blacknell and Godwin will be gone, I bet Johnson leaves as soon as he is allowed after 2017, that leaves Charles, Polk and Thompson, the last two in their last year of eligibility and its likely Charles last season too as a RS JR. That means your two deep is filled with RS FR/SO (like Webb and Cauthen from 2017), or FR (like Anderson-Butts from 2018). It would be nice to have a RS SO or JR in there. Not too mention Polk and Thompkins plays a very similar position and you'd want another larger possession receiver in there. Snelson is a perfect fit.

I believe CJF is still looking for a dynamic kick and punt returner. Mainly punts as I believe Sanders will be returning kicks next year. So if Snelson can excel at that he won't redshirt.

Someone on 247 gave us a Crystal Ball pick for Snelson. They predict he'll end up with us basically.

Gotcha. Missed the CB part,
Good news if we land him.
Thanks bmw199.
