PA Turnpike failed to collect $104 million in tolls....

Nothing a little more government control won't fix.

Have at it people....

Nothing new here. Pennsylvania government is incompetent in every department and in every endeavor. The Pa government should consist of the Governor, Lt. Gov., and Legislators. They should be the only government paid employees. The private sector should be hired for every other function.

The 6.7 million unpaid trips is not surprising. That 2.8 million trips that couldn’t be billed due to lack of address or inability to read a plate are more troublesome.

I am not a fan of “big” government here but why not do like Maryland does - you can’t renew a registration if you have any outstanding fines or tolls linked to it. It takes $500 to get over that hump in PA now and they’ll write it off after three years - not many of us spend $170 a year in tolls in PA.

Similar to the driver’s license compact that won’t let you renew your license with unpaid out of state violations, a toll compact could be added to it to prevent registration renewals from out of state.

LIttle surprised if that is note the case. Does Maryland have Pay by Plate? I know it has EZ Pass.

I think Florida started the Pay by Plate process - curious how much money they estimate losing every year.

or how about the most obvious. get rid of toll roads, you pay huge amount of people to administer and take tolls, etc...that provide no benefit. you also adversely effect people who live near a toll road as their means of transportation. So if I live near the turnpike i have to pay money but live near I80 or I81 then I don't have to pay money. That is what gas tax is for, it taxes how much you drive.

Speaking of tolls, I got a toll violation notice in the mail yesterday for not paying a Newark, Delaware toll back in June. The funny thing is is that I use EZPass, but the toll must not have picked-up my EZPass when I went through the toll. The toll violation itself is $4.00 (the cost of the toll), but they are assessing me an additional $50 worth of administrative costs, for a total toll violation notice of $54. Does anybody know how I can fight this toll violation so that I only pay the $4.00 toll charge via my EZPass?

there used to be a form you could fill out and send in showing you have an EZPass that just not have worked for whatever reason and they waived the fee.

$100 million? Pfffttt...

Couch cushion money for a well-run state like Pennsylvania.

Get your EZ Pass account and copy of your credit card statement showing payment made and send it to them. I did that years ago and got a letter saying they would rescind the additional toll charge and fees.

Better get the state troopers to start writing more tickets to make up for it.

OK, but the PA Turnpike was built between 1940 and 1956, well before the majority of the adjoining properties were developed. Further, the PA Turnpike generally has secondary and tertiary roads that support it and local traffic.

And, if you moved near the turnpike and planned on using it for commute, wouldn't you already know it's a toll road? It's not like it's some big surprise.

So, not sure what you mean when people are adversely affected if the Turnpike was there before they moved to that location, that it has always been a toll road and that secondary and tertiary roads exist to support local traffic.

W/ our trucks and crews and us, this happens a lot w/ SunPass and that's how we handle it.

Does Florida have the same issue with tolls not being paid? They have Pay by Plate also correct?
For some roads. Turnpike is SunPass - no pay by plate. Sawgrass Expressway is SunPass/EZ Pass/pay by plate

They're to busy looking for DWIs. Donuts with icing. I can drive eight miles down Rt 15 and back and see 30 traffic violations. Speeding, tailgating, cruising the left lane, changing lanes through an intersection but never a police car.

Well they got my money. Last month was in PA. Got on the TP, looked for ticket, no ticket. Was concerned when exiting i would be charged for the entire TP. Exited, no toll booth, no ticket taker. On and off TP several times during my PA trip. Finally called TP commission fearing I would be billed huge amounts. Was told no, they had pictures and would send a bill to my home. Received bill today, much less than i thought. Paid so PA and I are even.

You think these people have legally registered vehicles?

It's like the old joke about speeding.

Want to stop speeding? Measure time between toll booths. Fine everyone who speeds.

That will cut about 95 percent of speeding as everyone will conform immediately.

They won't though. Because the police want the income that comes from the tickets.

reminds me of the tax collector Berkheimer Associates. I've seen some of my clients get whacked for the $10 percapita tax not being paid for. they charge a $25 administrative fee plus penalty and interest. if you don't pay that they will send a wage attachment letter to your employer and force the employer to deduct it from your pay check and remit it to them.

I've got some old license plates lying around. Nice to know how to beat the system.

I doubt that they get more than 1 percent of the speeders.

That happened to me about 3-4 years ago at the Northbound Newark, DE toll plaza. The Ez pass worked southbound. I called and was on hold FOREVER only to be told the only way to appeal the fine was by using the DE Ezpass website which I did. My appeal got denied. Good luck

Yeah but what i Said is it eliminates 95 percent of speeding.

Most people are speeding at 5 to 15 over as there is no consequence.

95% of them will stop if measured.

The other 5 percent are jokers.

Most of the truckers have GPS units that alert a call center when the truck exceeds the speed limit. Many of the consumer insurance companies give you a discount for "safe driving" which in includes speeding. Now the govt is looking at taxation on mileage driven. Not a leap to see that all cars will have GPS to monitor speed, miles, tailgating, rapid acceleration and the rest.

I had a trucker try to run me off the road two years ago. i called the number on this side of the truck and he, in real-time, told me exactly what the guy had done and read it back to me to verify. At one point he said "holly scnikies, he was doing over 90mph and changing several lanes at once." He assured me the driver was going to be fired that afternoon (it wasn't the first complaint). He told me their corporate insurance looks at reports and adjusts the insurance fee based on the fleet performance. I gave him my number but never heard back. today, on the interstates here, the trucks are lined up doing 55 mph on the highways when they used to be doing 80.

I remember ready that Philly has a crazy high rate of unregistered cars. Like 30%. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that an unregistered car can just cruise thru the transponder readers and toll by plate lanes for "free".

Shit, they already don't write enough tickets to support themselves and instead siphon billions off the second highest gas tax in the country!

Maybe they can get back to stunts like this. (pretty sure this was in PA)

Yeah well electric vehicle owners aren’t paying that tax. If some PA politicians had their way I-80would be a toll road.
