Penn State Basketball Big Man Miles Goodman Enters Transfer Portal

Another one out the door. I still say go outside the CONUS for prospects. Goodman was injured, showed very little when he played and now he wants out. Adios.![]()

I know that he was a 4 star and injured to start the season but l agree l did not see high 4 star talent when he played. It's so disappointing that players today for the most part have zero patience and leave at the first sign of adversityAnother one out the door. I still say go outside the CONUS for prospects. Yep...They've been coddled their entire life. I can't blame them to some extent. Why grind away at the bottom end of the Power conference teams when you can make the post season at a mid-major when the gap between the haves and have nots is small. Other than making an NBA roster (or playing overseas) March Madness is the prize.I know that he was a 4 star and injured to start the season but l agree l did not see high 4 star talent when he played. That is far from a definite.Hopefully that means Neideehauser is staying?
He got pushed around quite a bit trying to play against Big Ten post players. I hate to see him leave as I still think there is an upside to him, but it is starting to get concerning to see one by one players enter the portal.Another one out the door. I still say go outside the CONUS for prospects. Goodman was injured, showed very little when he played and now he wants out. Adios.
And that really worries me. Losing any other player now starts to put a damper on next season. Right now we have a 7 footer coming in so it most likely will be a wash with Miles moving on, but it is disappointing after a very disappointing year. That is far from a definite.
We have to keep Niederhauser. No other option and Rhoades knows this. Then build around him and the highly recruited guard who is coming in. We need a really good 3 pt shooter. Also we need the whole team to play better defense. Ace was defensive player of the year yet routinely we gave up 75 plus points. We have to be much better than that because we will win on toughness and defense not talent. That is far from a definite.
Carter was from Mississippi, and played there. Stewart did play his final two high school years in California, but he is from the Baltimore area. That may enable Rhoades to keep him. Felt sorry for Miles as you said his injury really hurt him, but he was pushed around very easily and didn't show much. Him and Nzeh never really panned out.Part of me thinks back to our old football issues of keeping players from a distance in State College. We've had some luck with FL, TX and Cali- but lost a lot of guys well before The Portal.
These basketball players have probably been nomads their teen years. Goodman from Seattle, Stewart from Mississippi both end up in California for high school.
In the past a kid from Washington state who somehow landed in University Park transferring out wouldn't have been surprising. We have had to go beyond our geography to try and find talent.
Goodman's injury didn't help- but his stat line isn't what he expected. Kids who perform leave for more $, and kids who don't leave for greener pastures.
Oh well.
Good luck to him.
It will be a killer if we lose the 4th. He is a solid 2 man, and I think he will add the 3 point shooting we need. Losing Hudson Ward I think is more of a blessing thana problem. I don't think he would have helped us next year, and it will give us an open spot to bring in some more experience.3 out of the 4 recruits from last yr are gone.
Another one out the door. I still say go outside the CONUS for prospects. Goodman was injured, showed very little when he played and now he wants out. Adios.
No reason to think that, not yet at least. He has produced some big wins in the two years, and the demise of the team this year was mostly due to injuries, as they had far more than most teams. You will probably see a record amount of kids becoming free agents this year, so losing a few won't be a surprise. Miles was highly rated, but so was Kebba Njie, and he never panned out. Carey Booth was another highly rated pst player, and he hasn't shown anything in college as of yet. Miles may realize that he just isn't up to Big Ten post play and that could be the reason he is going, I don't know. So far we have a top point guard coming in to replace Carter, and a 7 footer from Camp Hill coming in also.Coach may be way in over his head.
Coach may be way in over his head.
Couple ways to look at this including Rhodes having a very frank and direct talk with everyone on the team.. no one is safe.. the bar has to be raised… whether we look into the portal.. look overseas.. whatever.. with the record and performance of this past season.. everyone’s “ job” should be in doubt IMO…![]()

In this case I don't see it being money as I don't see why any other school would pay him more with the stats he put up, even if they are small. I have a feeling that he got pushed around too much. Not too sure he is cut out for Big Ten. Reminds me a lot of Kebba Njie. Highly ranked center out of high school but never amounted to anything in college.Hate to see Coach Rhoades lose talented players. But Goodman needs some serious weight room work in order to hold his own against the better B10 big men. Is it just money that causes the crazy transfer activity or a lack a maturity, or both....
Don't think cleaning house is the way to go. He needs to keep his core group here so he doesn't have to start from scratch. Konan, Dilione, Rice, Stewart are going to be key elements for next season. Lose any more of them and it will be hard to recover. What we have lost so far is replaceable without completely rebuilding.Couple ways to look at this including Rhodes having a very frank and direct talk with everyone on the team.. no one is safe.. the bar has to be raised… whether we look into the portal.. look overseas.. whatever.. with the record and performance of this past season.. everyone’s “ job” should be in doubt IMO…
That only works if you bring in young players and are capable of keeping them together. If he can keep the 8 scholarships there now together, then bring in 5 solid Jr or Sr we could still stand a chance of having a competitive team next year.If you are going that route then recruit a team. Bring them in as a group.

Agree. PSU needs people who are built for the rigors of B1G play. They are out there, might be a bit raw but you can't teach "height/girth" and agressiveness as Rhoades recently said he needed. The Center @ George Mason (mid major) is an example. Dude is in 6'8"-6'9" 245-250 pound range and was not afraid to mix it up. Might have been raw finese wise out of HS but improved. Surround them with a few perimeter shooters and let them rebound and defend doing their work inside. If this is the case, then why is PSU bringing in players who phycially are unable to compete against Big 10 competition? Does PSU ever bring in big players who are physical specimens? It always seems like we bring in kids who look like they've never lifted a weight or had a good meal in their life.
Goodman was a true freshman and he was injured for the first half of the year. I don't think you can hold his stats against him. Hopefully this was more about the potential he showed in practice. In this case I don't see it being money as I don't see why any other school would pay him more with the stats he put up, even if they are small. RMU's big man just entered the portal; he would be a good addition. He played very well against Bama.Agree. PSU needs people who are built for the rigors of B1G play. That's a rhetorical question, because the option of bringing in undersized frosh who physically can't compete, regardless if they have some latent talent, clearly hasn't worked. I really believe that you should recruit for guards and wing players, and use the portal or the international option to bring in physically mature, adult post players, like Illinois and Michigan did. God, even Northwestern hs these types of players.Do you have a list of better options?
along with the fact these freshman...likely will only play..2 years and leave...funny..my son was at an ID Camp recently for soccer..a D2 Top Tier program..300+ kids from top academies in the country attended..at the end of the camp..though brutal to hear..the Coach was very frank..told the boys..its unlikely..any of you will make this roster or be recruited for a number of reasons 1) you are competing against 21-22 even 23 year olds in the transfer portal coming from other programs ..D1 , overseas...etc..its a different World.2) I'd rather get a seasoned player who can come in right away and compete vs being on the bench....there is no more building Teams through freshman recruits...( football may be an exception)...but a skinny talented frosh playing in the Big10. ? ...again maybe 2 years max for the kid...That's a rhetorical question, because the option of bringing in undersized frosh who physically can't compete, regardless if they have some latent talent, clearly hasn't worked. I have no interest in seeing scrawney frosh get used and abused, when they actually play, against teams like MSU season after season after season. Then, after getting used and abused, they become despondent and disgruntled and leave after one season.

There are many experienced players at lower level programs who could play in the Big 10 and more than hold their own, even if they would be considered three star players or whatever. This is especially true if they have to go up against undeveloped/and or underdeveloped teenagers who may be more highly ranked. I don't expect an Akeem or Patrick Ewing to come here from the portal, but PSU definitely could bring in battle hardned, physically mature players to grind it out in Big 10 games. The failed option was a 4* who can develop. The next realistic option is a 3* who is even less developed.
A more developed 4* who is game ready is a 5* who is NOT even considering psu.

I appreciate your optimism, and you sound like you follow PSU basketball way more than I do. My opinion of coach is based on the fact that this is his 1st time in the big leagues. He is very happy to have the job as it is a huge step up for him. Penn St is hoping this guy can win at the big-time level. Key word is hope. I don't think he can. He has no track record of success at this level. Are there any top recruits who will want to play for him? What's the sell? Coach says "I won at VCU". Prospect responds "What's that?" Penn St needs to hire someone who has won at a big-time school, either as a head coach or assistant or a former NBA coach. They have something to sell.No reason to think that, not yet at least. Back during January and February, I mentioned Richard Pitino as a possible replacement because of his previous head coaching experience at Minnesota and the great job that he did at New Mexico. Well, yesterday, he took the Xavier job. Based on this decision, I'd have to believe that he would've have had interest in taking a job in the Big 10 if he had been offered.I appreciate your optimism, and you sound like you follow PSU basketball way more than I do.
