This is happening in many sports ... college baseball had their roster spots reduced (but scholarships increased). Of course, many/most programs don't have the funding to take advantage of the increase scholarships, so that potential benefit to the student-athlete is largely wasted ... but they are negatively affected by the roster limits. The result is that college coaches, being the molders of young men and advocates for higher education that they are (end sarcasm), have decided that they're only there to win, and development isn't just secondary - it's not something they want to do at all ... so now the young kids they would formerly take in and develop, have to go lesser D1, D2, D3, Juco or NAIA at first and develop there ... at which point those coaches may finally look at them and bring them on board to help them win.along with the fact these freshman...likely will only play..2 years and leave...funny..my son was at an ID Camp recently for soccer..a D2 Top Tier program..300+ kids from top academies in the country attended..at the end of the camp..though brutal to hear..the Coach was very frank..told the boys..its unlikely..any of you will make this roster or be recruited for a number of reasons 1) you are competing against 21-22 even 23 year olds in the transfer portal coming from other programs ..D1 , overseas...etc..its a different World.2) I'd rather get a seasoned player who can come in right away and compete vs being on the bench....there is no more building Teams through freshman recruits...( football may be an exception)...but a skinny talented frosh playing in the Big10. ? ...again maybe 2 years max for the kid...
It's the complete antithesis of what college is supposed to be about, but it's what the common fan lusts after ... and then complains about when they get it.
