Basketball Penn State Basketball Big Man Miles Goodman Enters Transfer Portal

along with the fact these freshman...likely will only play..2 years and leave...funny..my son was at an ID Camp recently for soccer..a D2 Top Tier program..300+ kids from top academies in the country attended..at the end of the camp..though brutal to hear..the Coach was very frank..told the boys..its unlikely..any of you will make this roster or be recruited for a number of reasons 1) you are competing against 21-22 even 23 year olds in the transfer portal coming from other programs ..D1 , overseas...etc..its a different World.2) I'd rather get a seasoned player who can come in right away and compete vs being on the bench....there is no more building Teams through freshman recruits...( football may be an exception)...but a skinny talented frosh playing in the Big10. ? ...again maybe 2 years max for the kid...
This is happening in many sports ... college baseball had their roster spots reduced (but scholarships increased). Of course, many/most programs don't have the funding to take advantage of the increase scholarships, so that potential benefit to the student-athlete is largely wasted ... but they are negatively affected by the roster limits. The result is that college coaches, being the molders of young men and advocates for higher education that they are (end sarcasm), have decided that they're only there to win, and development isn't just secondary - it's not something they want to do at all ... so now the young kids they would formerly take in and develop, have to go lesser D1, D2, D3, Juco or NAIA at first and develop there ... at which point those coaches may finally look at them and bring them on board to help them win.

It's the complete antithesis of what college is supposed to be about, but it's what the common fan lusts after ... and then complains about when they get it.

Back during January and February, I mentioned Richard Pitino as a possible replacement because of his previous head coaching experience at Minnesota and the great job that he did at New Mexico. Well, yesterday, he took the Xavier job. Based on this decision, I'd have to believe that he would've have interest in taking a job in the Big 10 if he had been offered.

Also, just since last week, IU, Iowa and Minnesota all have hired new head coaches who have done good to very good jobs at WVU, Drake and Colorado State respectively; things aren't going to gey any easier in the Big 10.
true but in the NIL age there are lots of teams who are great one year and bad the next due to bad chemistry. I dont think its a given that any team in the conference wont have a down year due to it. UMD could really go bad if Willard goes to another school

If Willard leaves, I fully expect Maryland to be among the dregs of the Big 10 next season because Queen already has intimated that he'll follow him.

Queen will be a lottery pick this year, he's not playing for Willard next year no matter where he goes. Or I will say that it would be the biggest surprise in a long time if he doesnt go. His 'people' in Baltimore want that NBA $ and cache.

The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Hold on there! That grass may be loco weed.

I appreciate your optimism, and you sound like you follow PSU basketball way more than I do. My opinion of coach is based on the fact that this is his 1st time in the big leagues. He is very happy to have the job as it is a huge step up for him. Penn St is hoping this guy can win at the big-time level. Key word is hope. I don't think he can. He has no track record of success at this level. Are there any top recruits who will want to play for him? What's the sell? Coach says "I won at VCU". Prospect responds "What's that?" Penn St needs to hire someone who has won at a big-time school, either as a head coach or assistant or a former NBA coach. They have something to sell.
He is bringing in the 29th best player in the country next year, Kayden Mingo, who is part of the 28th best class in the country. He brought in more 4* recruits in the portal than Penn State has ever had, so yes there are a number of top recruits who want to play for him. Ace Baldwin could have played with just about any team if he wanted to, but chose to come back and play for Rhoades. It is a small example, but considering he is only here for two years it is impressive. We will see if he can bring in any talent now.

Goodman was a true freshman and he was injured for the first half of the year. I don't think you can hold his stats against him. Hopefully this was more about the potential he showed in practice.
He was hurt, but in the time he played he seemed completely lost and over matched. To me it was a sign that he just wasn't cut out for the Big Ten. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

I am not convinced any of those guys are an upgrade over Rhoades. DeVries could be but not Pitino Jr or the guy from Drake now Iowa's new head coach. Remember Pitino Jr had a shot in the B10 and got fired from Minny.

Don't get the wrong, Rhoades needs to show significant improvement next season as in a Dance berth. If not, then I think he still has a job (unless the team looked poor throughout the season) but he has to make the Dance in year 4, no other option at that point.

Has Mingo requested his release from PSU?

I believe Goodman will be a better than average P5 big man, after he is healthy and does a good bit of work in the weight room. To me he looked to have nice talent and skills but was just over matched strength wise. Maybe he was over rated as a recruit, but he looks like the type of player that Rhoades could develop and be a very good B10 starter. Hard to find ready to play Bigs and even harder to get them to PSU so Rhoades will need guys from the portal or will have to develop them, more than likely.

But Rhoades has proven to be able to develop talent. He did a nice job with Konan over the last year, a player without much production in low level games that by the end of the season had stretches of dominance in B10 games and has an actual choice to continue in college or try the NBA.

Yep, many post guys are now 22-24 years old with NIL and portal years. No one should expect a 'big' to be ready as a freshman unless they are a 5 star

Who remembers the days when very few freshman played and instead developed their skills in hopes of making a major contribution as juniors and seniors?

I'm sure most are seeking better options to pursue their education.
I have to ask, how many are there? It has to be over or close to half. So you've got to redo your roster every single year?

Kirby Smart, GA, said yesterday that agents are contacting kids left and right to lure them away from GA and to a higher NIL opportunity.

The system is totally FUBAR.

Getting to this same idea in HS sports. Kids (more their parents) think they should be on varsity and playing as freshmen. There are some who can but there are more and more who can't that think they should. Learn how to make a left handed layup before telling me you should be on varsity.....

PS will never spend the money. When it comes to Basketball PS always goes Bargain Basement Shopping. I have no hope because there is zero evidence that gives me hope. Having hope is great but I've been hoping against hope for too many years when it comes to basketball.

The many that can play in the b10 are the guys that everyone else wants too.

The under the radar guys coming out of high school have a higher % of busts. There are over 1000+ kids playing at mid majors. How many do you think can actually go up a level? If PSU targets those under the radar guys when they are still in HS then PSU will probably have about the same % of busts as the mid majors. It also takes some of those kids a few years to develop.

PS. Hasn't PSU ALREADY brought in players from lower level programs? You make it sound like PSU has not tried that plan.
As they say, it's time for PS to go big in basketball or go home.

I will hold the judgement on Miles. He could be another Njie or Booth, Njie never did amount to anything, and Booth will be heading for his 3rd team in 3 years with nothing to show for it. Miles does need to put on some weight and muscle. Will be interesting to see where he ends up and how well he does.
Konan is giving the NBA a shot, but I think he might find that he is just not yet ready for the NBA. He does seem to have all the tools to play at the next level, but I think he might find another year of college might help to increase his position in the draft. I do hope so, as he said he would return to Penn State if he doesn't make it.
