Penn State Depth Chart officially released

Thanks for posting. There is a lot to like here.

Don't see Adam Breneman anywhere; is he out with an injury, or just not in line for playing time?

Palmer/Mahon/Mangiro/Gaia/Nelson

Hamilton, Godwin and Thompkins 'starting' at WR

We are really thin at LB

Our Kick returners are 222lbs each?!

Where's Breneman? Surprised that Wilkerson is ahead of Carter. The weakside and strongside linebackers seem mixed up. Is there a guy who was a linebacker until a week ago returning kicks? Isn't that a no-no?

Interesting...

I don't see Brenneman listed anywhere at TE?
Also, Barkley is 4th string RB. I wonder whether this is because he hasn't picked up the pass protection stuff or maybe to motivate him?

Biggest surprise to me is that Matt Zanellato is still on the team. I thought he was gone.

Did Brenneman take a Medical Redshirt last season? Perhaps he's taking another Redshirt this season (subject to NCAA paperwork and approval). Only thing I can think of.

Could move Cabrinda to MLB on Farmer back to OLB

Yeah, that HAS to be the reason. Lazy mope needs to be motivated.

Greater emphasis on TE blocking. CJF is serious about running game.

It's ok when ur 222 LB former LB runs 4.4

Time to think he is 4th team on a depth chart of 3 deep max.....

Warner was 4th team when his first game began and 2nd team when the first game ended.....

Breneman's absence from the line-up has to be a mistake, or he is injured.

No, he could be 4th team which does not show up on 3 deep max depth chart. CJF said he's somewhat rusty from the year off.

Update: although CJF would not get into details it seems Brenemen has some type of medical or other issue that he and his family are dealing with and that the timeline for him to get back is not known. CJF said that if there were other TE injuries going forward that one of the true freshmen TE's may have to play (i.e. go green)

AB is hurt. Hoping to be back soon is the word. No doubt more on AB at the presser today.

Interesting observations:
  1. Only nine senior eligibility players on the entire list.
  2. Only four senior eligibility players as starters (1 offense, 4 defense). Of course that isn't counting Hack.
  3. Mark Allen weighs 181 lbs as a RB, but 184 lbs as a PR. Must wear some extra pads for punt returns?!
  4. Glad to see our local kid (Tyler Yazujian) still the long snapper. My daughter went to Spring-Ford HS with him and said all he ever wanted was to play football at PSU.

No Breneman, Carter 3rd string is what jumps out at me initially at TE.
CJF Talked up Wilkerson last week....so no surprise he may have passed KC (who really had a very disappointing 2014 - with the one shining moment being the bowl game) I hope KC has a nice productive year for his finale....but its going to be competitive getting snaps (if everyone stays healthy)

Could move Cabrinda to MLB on Farmer back to OLB

PSU - like a lot of teams now - doesn't really play a lot of traditional MLB.

It is really more like 2 "box" linebackers (in our case Cabinda and Wartman) who stack behind the line, and one "field" backer.....who adjusts based on formation/down/distance etc (Bell)

The 2 box guys are relatively interchangable

I was surprised that Geno Lewis wasn't listed as a starter and that Gaia/Dowrey were listed at RG instead of the guy from Standford who I think they had listed as a backup LG behind Mahon. I certainly hope Gaia/Dowrey have improved from last year b/c both of those guys were terrible last season. Pressure up the middle of the pocket killed us last year.

If Hack did decide to stay, I'm convinced the offense would be reminding us at times of '94 next year. The DL worries me a bit for next year though. I guess we should play this year before we worry about next.

Not to hijack this thread but I really do NOT believe it is a forgone conclusion he's leaving. I think he stays and chases college football history.

I HOPE you are right, but if he is a top 10 pick he is gone and its a no brainer for him. We do finally have some depth at QB next year and beyond so we would be OK.

FWIW - Im not sure if Dowrey was ever fully healthy last year.

He's a guy I want to keep a close eye on....he may be the "most improved" candidate for the offensive line. He's one of the few guys who looks like a POTENTIAL run-game mauler (I don't see mangiro, gaia or some of the others a potential "maulers") We - obviously - need someone in the middle who can actually root out a big, fat-assed DT to give the inside run game a chance.

Didn't Gaia have a ridiculously high rep count on the 225lb bench. Like NFL combine high, I know it wasn't as many as Barney but it was still impressive. I think he has much higher potential.

Would not surprise me to see a lot of Wilkerson in the run game. He seems to be the best blocker of the TE group. Gotta believe the Off Guards have a short leash and if they fail then Reihner will see time quickly.

Def End concerns me some, are Nassib and Sickles ready to bring it and control the edge?

Could be.

Personally, I'm a lot less concerned about weightlifting numbers than about the ability to get that low leverage and power a big boy out of the hole. From the little he was able to play, Dowery seemed (to me) to have that knack.....kinda like a great big strong hog, who can get in low and gain leverage. The other guys (and, granted, none of them had much experience) didn't seem to have that knack.

If you try to take on one of those big boys chest-to-chest, you just ain't gonna move 'em (know matter what you do in the gym)...you gotta' be able to get the big lower body power engaged up and under the defense. We RARELY (ie - almost never) saw that last year....that's why we typically had - what - about 60 yards per game rushing last year?. Hopefully the experience from 2014 helps ALL of the guys up front to some degree.

Tailback is 4 deep.

Because they usually get a few carries for 4 running backs. They also must plan to play 3 deep at CB. And CJF said when he moved Farmer back to Safety that he needs 5 total Safety's to play this year and he has 5 listed on the DC. But at CB, there have been reports that D. Worley has had a nice camp, coming back from an injury from H.S. that caused him to redshirt last year. But CB is a 3 deep position that looks to have 6 CB's ahead of Worley, so Worley is not listed. If CJF wanted to list a 4 deep for TE"s, he would do so regardless of Breneman's injury status, as there are other TE's that he could list (walkon's). If he needed 4 TE's and Breneman was injured he would more seriously consider playing one of the two true freshman TE's, and then list one of them at 4th team. But it seems CJF only plans to play 3 TE's each week, baring injuries.
