Football Penn State Football Spring Roster Update - Offense

Yep, player weights can be overblown as a reason for optimism or concern.....but

Great to see Chop up to 253 from his reported 239 2022 playing weight

Townley doesn't seem to have added any bulk and at 6'6" 267 will look more like a DE than a DT

Beamon back down in the 250's as a starting DT? Must no have heard about Franklin's goal to get bigger up front to try and stop UM's yearly ground game pounding

Carter at 249? Didn't he play around 230 last season? He was a freshman star at Will due to his explosive first step and closing speed. I'm looking for him to be back in the 230's by the WVU game.

Wylie in his 2nd season after reportedly arriving at PSU around 200 is at 217. Still pretty slim for a Will or Mike LB.

Rojas up to 214 after reported arriving under 200. Good progress to end up at Will eventually

Along the Oline, good to see Shelton up to 300 as he reportedly was light at 285 last season but very effective at that weight.

Loane at 352, WOW. Franklin said he never saw a player carry their weight like Loane did in the 330's (?) when he arrived. Must be the dancing bear at this size.....

Achumba seems to get left out of the conversation about starting Guards, but wasn't he about to be a starter before his injuries? And he is one big dude now and probably returned for a reason.....

Flowers has been the forgotten man within the talk about competition for PT at Safety, and looked more like a WR last season. But at 196 he may get into the fray this Spring.

Dinkins getting into the 240's along with improvement from the coaching he is getting should improve his blocking and get him on the field at TE even more. He may be the downfield threat at TE to replace Johnson in 2024.

At 6'6" 269 the clock is ticking on Barnwell's tenure as a TE

Saunders still seems pretty slight for a B10 WR at 172, but if he can get open and catch footballs ..... Hamler was no bigger .....

OK, forget all that and find out who can actually play football at a high level. ;)

I assume we'll see a full breakdown of changes by the staff here but that's a nice rundown.

The O-line looks massive right now. Seems like the current weights are designed to put on mass which helps to gain strength in the weight room. Once the season gets closer, the players start to cut the bad weight while hopefully retaining most of the strength gains over the winter and spring.

Earlier this week Strength and Conditioning Coach talk about Saunders being too big......and they had to remake his body. Sounded like he lost some fat and added muscle Still small at 172, but the comments are that his body looks much different. I have high hopes for him at WR..........

Beamon kills the teams without strong inside blockers with his speed.....up against tOSU, UM and even MSU he struggles if the guard is close to his speed and carrying 50 extra pounds......Was hoping for Beamon to be 275 going into next year.........

Wow OL is enormous.....average seems to be about 6'4' 320 LBS........
PSU has a bunch of 6 ft tall 190 lb. cornerbacks and safeties...... very impressive group from a size perspective.

Surprises:
Evans WR at 6 ft 190 lb..... is thicker than I remember him being...
We have some impressive size at DE.....
LB is bigger than we have been for a while.....if we roll out King, Carter, and Jacobs at starters we will have 3 lbs weighing on average 245 lbs.......
Warren and Johnson almost exactly same size 6'6" 255 lbs.....
Singleton to 228 lbs.....dang if still as fast....that is a good sized back with 4.4 speed.........
DT does give some size with a number at 295/300 lbs. would like to see Artis at 315 lbs. play well....the rest are in that 275 - 300 lb range with Beamon quite light at 256 lbs....

Impressive at least on paper.......

Ioane needs to move to DT asap.

Yep, I believe I've read that Saunders admitted to being out of shape and carrying bad weight when he arrived at PSU. So it seems to have taken him over a year to build up the muscle he needs to play WR in the B10. If Saunders could have a break out Spring and Fall camp it would go a long way towards building a surprisingly good 2023 PSU WR corps.

I seem to remember Beamon's weight fluctuating a good bit during his time at PSU. Would seem to be a better plan to gradually get up to 275-280 to play 3 tech at a high level over his time at PSU, but that hasn't been how the roster has cronicled his journey. Lots of time between now and September but it doesn't seem he'll be big enough to line up against the big boys as a DT and play stout run defense...... Maybe if the DT depth develops he can play some DE against the better running teams on PSU's schedule.

The staff backed off the get bigger comment but who cares about facts. They said the UM game was about trust.

What was the OL's excuse that day? Were they too small? Singleton and Allen had 35 yds combined.

The staff's actions are really not about getting bigger. If they have a big player they move him up to the next position where he is small for the position.

Yep. There is no way in hell a 256 pound d lineman can be effective against the Michigan's of the world. Last year it showed and its not going to get better with him out there at 256. That's nor even on par with most FCS teams.

Beamon was blown away at the line of scrimmage all day and Franklin's comment stands.

The coaches themselves backed off the comment. The staff can substitute.

What was the OLs problem? Were they too small? 35 yds combined from the RBs.

On defense we were outnumbered with pulling guards and our LBs were slow to fill holes. Carter helped here a lot for the remainder of the year.
Yep. They pulled like crazy and overloaded the attack point. Our guys were slow to flow, methinks because they were young and lacking confidence in the new Diaz system .

Now a year older, know the system much better, and reacting instinctively instead of thinking….. and they will be fine against Mich

Not Beamon. Not at 250 pounds.

Well all you folks that worried about the light weight PSU offensive line should be thrilled with these weight changes.

I am thrilled with the size of the Oline.......in the Big 10 where everyone gets called maybe once for holding in a game.....get jumbo guys, teach them to hold and the running game improves...... if holding would be called more in line with the rule book, you would want leaner, faster guys.....but in the big 10 holding is encouraged....so go get big O Lineman.

I’m really still wondering about the coaches’ fascination with Beamon on the interior DLine at 256 lbs. I don’t think his performance last year justified their faith in him. Am I missing something?

Singleton's numbers -- Saquon-esque.

Doubt he'll ever have Barkley's elusiveness, but Nick can rack up some serious yardage and TD numbers.

He actually LOST 10 pounds from last year. I don't see how you can play him at DT...needs moved to DE or used only on 3rd and long situations at DT.

Go watch the Texas vs. BYU game that got Diaz fired. It very much looks like our game against Michigan. Diaz has seen this approach before and couldn't adjust. In all likelihood we are looking at a schematic misfit. We'll see this approach early and often this year as every man blocking team will be using it.

Anyone that is thrilled with the weight gain up front has no idea what they are talking about. We run a wide spread gap blocking scheme where four of five linemen are expected to pull get into position to wall off (as opposed to block) defenders on every running play and some pass plays. Size is counter productive.

True but they played the run much better against Utah and Utah runs a similar scheme.

Nelson +30 to 330
Traore +14 to 326
Donkoh +11 to 310
Lone +16 to 352
Achumba +26 to 341

These are some BIG numbers.......

Similar in that they run more than they pass but beyond that? The schemes are very different. Utah is closer to Maryland than Michigan. Michigan uses pure man blocking with a lot of pulling depending on who they play. They go pure smash mouth or they go wide pulling two or three linemen. They did both with a high degree of effectiveness against us. BYU did the same to Texas under Bronco. Utah uses a mostly zone blocking scheme where there is no pulling or wide concepts. These are trends. Expect to see a lot of pulling by teams that use gap or man blocking this year. This includes Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State and Rutgers. Iowa uses a zone/gap hybrid so expect a lot of wide gap.

We'll see this approach early and often this year as every man blocking team will be using it.

Did nobody understand this last year? Do our opponents need a full off season to "utilize the Michigan game plan"?

Or. Michigan executed well until we wore down.

Or. Nobody else can quite do what Michigan can.

Teams sometimes crap the bed. We did in Ann Arbor. Michigan did vs TCU. TCU did in the title game.

Just to confirm, you're looking at 7 to 9 wins regular season for PSU 2023?

Essentially that the team goes backward from 2022?
I think we'll be as good or maybe a little bit better overall but even though the bottom half of the schedule stinks out loud, we play a much harder schedule overall and will lose at least one more game. I think we'll lose to the usual culprits and drop another game or two depending on how much of a rebound Sparty has.

OK, forget all that and find out who can actually play football at a high level. ;)
Beamon at 256? Tf is that? I thought Townley was reportedly bigger as well.

Saw many of the kids at Career night on Wednesday. Great group of guys and very well rounded and easy to talk with.

This team is loaded and reaching for reasons to be critical I would point to inexperience at QB, WR, Safety, Kicking game and still somewhat light at DT. But this might be as loaded a squad as Franklion has had.

I’m not so sure that next year’s schedule is much harder, as you claim. Non-conference, at Auburn is replaced with a home game vs West Virginia….you can argue that might be easier since it’s a home game. Both Auburn and WVU were 5-7 last year. Conference schedule, at Purdue and home vs Minnesota is being replaced with at Illinois and home vs Iowa…..that certainly isn’t much harder. And, the two culprits we typically lose to, Michigan is a home game next year where we’ve had more success winning against, and Ohio State is breaking in a new QB. Sparty will be harder since it’s a road game.

Even at these sizes some of those increases have to include some bad weight. I can see a 300 lber adding 10 to 15 lbs of muscle in a year (20 max) but more than that would either have to include fat or height gain. Now there is always some natural variation with water weight and such but 26 and 30 lbs seems like more than muscle added.
