Football Penn State Football Spring Roster Update - Offense

Even at these sizes some of those increases have to include some bad weight. I can see a 300 lber adding 10 to 15 lbs of muscle in a year (20 max) but more than that would either have to include fat or height gain. Now there is always some natural variation with water weight and such but 26 and 30 lbs seems like more than muscle added.

Do you think 300lb players are all good weight? Do you think the 5 PBJs they eat before bed is all muscle? Why do you think some players lose 80lbs when they retire?

Unless these kids are juicing, it's definite that some of the weight gain isn't going to be pure muscle. Without knowing the stats of how much stronger they got in these 7 weeks, it's tough to gauge what the weight gains mean. If an OL increased his bench by 30 lbs and his squat by 70, the weight gain is fine. You have this window and summer to get these kids stronger. During spring camp and fall camp, you hope to maintain strength while shedding weight. During the season, you just want to stay healthy.

Achumba was injured so he had all year to lift and pump up…..and to eat….so not surprised he gained serious weight. And guys 20 hrs old are still maturing so they can put on good weight.

I assume the training staff keeps close tabs on the guys so I don’t think they just balloon up. But what do I know, these are still young kids so the good life is tempting.

Strength gains and speed/quickness/explosiveness do complete the picture. We don't have that information. Based only on weight gains, some of those listed on the oline did likely add some bad weight as well.

No one is naive enough to think OL are pure muscle as this voltz poster's line of questioning seems to imply. But some of the weight changes for the big boys are definitely eye popping. I suspect a few of those guys give a little poundage back during summer camp.

...and use the Tight Ends on quick hits.
TEs down the seem is beautiful. TE delays work nicely also. Chip and then find an open spot. We have the personnel for this to all be effective. TEs may also be a new QB's comfort blanket as he's getting his feet wet and the WRs are getting on page with him.

I'm guessing teams will load the box to see if Allar is ready and stop our run game. So the sooner those WRs are ready to make the D pay for that, the better everything will be.
