An altered state
Powered by the wrestling team’s sixth NCAA championship in the past seven years, Penn State Athletics has moved up to No. 4 in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings. The Nittany Lions are just eight points out of third place.

In the first winter sports compilation, Penn State climbed from No. 7 to No. 4, having earned its 10th consecutive top 10 fall finish. Penn State and Stanford are the nation’s only institutions to place in the top 10 in the final fall Directors’ Cup standings in each of the past 10 years. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 6 in the first winter compilation of 2015-16.

The ranking doesn't include the men's ice hockey finish (top 8) which should help when that gets added.

Stanford must kick ass in the spring and summer sports.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyone care to blame Sandy? Regarding Stanford, I watched Feherty interview Condolesa Rice on the golf channel Monday night. She didn't take up golf until age 50 and was of course invited to join Augusta National, and has been multi talented her whole life. She is a huge college sports fan. She was a competitive figure skater, a classical pianist, and of course a PHD specializing in Russian studies before becoming Secretary of State. I got the impression that Stanford offers a tremendous atmosphere for their athletes. She spoke about her role in the football playoff committee- it's really hard to find any faults with this woman.

Not in lacrosse this year. We should be picking up 80-90 pts each this spring for the men and women. Including the pts for hockey we should be firmly in second place very shortly. I expect they will be pretty dominant in golf and baseball though.

I figured it was sports like Swimming, Diving, Tennis, Golf, Baseball and Girls Softball, that they just kicked ass in.

Stanford and PSU compete in 30 sports tracked by the Learfield. About 27 of the 30 are the same sports. Stanford does not have either hockey or men's lacrosse. We do not have rowing or water polo. Other than that, pretty much the same. Those who think that Stanford wins by scoring in esoteric sports are not informed.

Schools can score in only 20, ten men's sports and 10 women's sports.

PSU will probably score in 10 of each, however, many of our scores will be scratches in a few sports, such as the 37 points won by swim team.

Stanford will score in 25-26 sports and just discard the lowest scores.

They pretty much kick ass in everything if getting points in an event equates to kicking ass.

If you look at the final rankings, they win a NC or 2 every year and finish top 10, or even top 5 in a lot of sports.

We can sorta hang with them in the fall and winter, but they pull away in the spring.

I met and spoke with her and Lynn Swann ( also a member) at Augusta National a couple years back...they actually were greeting Patrons around Berckman's Place which is a new Luxury VIP Hospitality the Club built just for The Masters.

She is very impressive...

Yea, I was flipping channels.....eating a sandwich...planning on moving on.....and then found her very engaging....smart, has a sense of humor, and just an interesting person all together.....ended up watching the whole interview and enjoying it all.

I've been following this for years. This is usually the peak for PSU and then we drop off a bit in the spring. I know this because I've lost a lunch bet with a Gator alum for like 20 straight years. Just about every year we are ahead going into spring and lose.
Wish we could improve the spring sports.

Did not know that Nit. Thanks

Only one of their shooters is from WV. They do have Ginny Thrasher, an Olympic gold medalist, on the squad.
Interesting Art. Just looked up in Wikipedia and they have 19 team titles and 25 individual titles. Far and away the best ever. Love the sport and just saw that they won again in 2016 on the Learfield stats. Thanks

Thrasher won the first good metal in last summers Olympic Games!Pitt will definitely move up the list after the Spring sports are done. They have the #1 synchronized bubble blowing pair in the country!!!Steel(4.2 40)Curtain and Captain Cindy(Clearly Act)Reilly have blown bubbles a record 257 feet in the air!Mark May said he's never seen two men blow sooo much hot air in his lifetime.Plus Mark said H2P and it's lightening offense.
