Penn State hires Matt Limegrover as new Offensive Line coach

This is a great hire. I like the fact that he has a masters from NW in addition to all his coaching experience. He seems like a high character guy. I'm beginning to think that Franklin's offense is going to be much more run based with a mobile QB as a big part of that system. This will be interesting to watch over the next few years. Glad we are stocked up on running back talent.

They say every (good) coach maintains a list of 2 or 3 viable replacements for every position coach or coordinator job, so that they can reach out quickly when they need to without a protracted search. As detail oriented as Frankin seems to be, I have no doubt he does this.

Large programs hiring guys with higher coaching positions from smaller programs seems to be a theme these days, and I think that's smart. We have a former head coach as OC, and a former OC as OL coach now. I'd imagine this makes it easier for them to work with the coaches above them, since they used to be in those roles and know how it works.

I'm also glad this hire came quickly. My biggest concern was keeping recruiting momentum and by not wasting any time hopefully this will minimize any potential recruiting fallout.

I really like this hire. For as critical I have been of Franklin over the past two years, I have to acknowledge what he's done this off-season to address some glaring coaching problems and to free up some roster spots for kids with better potential.

Now if he would just leave the in-game decisions (fake punts, clock management) up to someone else, I'd feel a lot better.

Franklin has previously stated he always has a list ready. I'd imagine most head coaches do the same.

Why did Clays fire him?

Thumbs up on the hire, I just wonder why Clays let him go? Minny always had a good, solid O line.

Gophers defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys got an annual raise to $600,000, and offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover will make $550,000 under the terms of their new three-year contracts signed this month.

The Star Tribune obtained copies of the new deals Wednesday through a data practices act request. Claeys had been making $346,800, and Limegrover was at $341,800 under their previous contracts.

All nine of Coach Jerry Kill’s assistant coaches received raises, thanks to language in Kill’s new contract that ensures his assistant coaching salary pool will rank in the top six of the Big Ten.

Kill’s seven other assistant coaches each got new two-year deals. Here are the new salaries:

Quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski: $253,000

Defensive backs/special teams coach Jay Sawvel: $253,000

Defensive line coach Jeff Phelps: $230,000

Running backs coach Pat Poore: $230,000

Wide receivers coach Brian Anderson: $230,000

H-backs/tight ends coach Rob Reeves: $230,000

Linebackers coach Mike Sherels: $181,000

Assistant coaches salaries are on the rise throughout the sport. Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi will be paid $904,600 this year. And according to the Washington Post, Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley just got a raise to $625,000.

"Nitt1300,
Now does this mean the sky isn't falling?

Dadgummit! Would someone please make up the board's mind? It's falling w/Shoop leaving; it's not falling w/Pry named DC; it's falling again w/Hand leaving; it's not falling w/Limegrover hired.

I'm 54, terribly out of shape, high BP and on meds, so I can't take this much more. I don't like roller coaster rides at Cedar Point, and this is starting to resemble one.

Are we good now, or with the transfers and players leaving program the sky is still falling?

Holy Hannah! Nitt1300, does this mean we could have sat tight for a few days and not have had to get ourselves worked up?

:D

probably didn't want the old OC around and being available, in case the powers that be decided they picked the wrong coordinator as Kill's replacement.

Because he couldn't fire himself

He shoulda' fired himself after he committed a total abortion....costing his team a win against Michigan.

As far as Limegrover is concerned....after taking over as OC at Minnesota, the Gophers offense improved considerably (despite not having much skill position talent)...last year - without a D1 QB - they regressed, and Claeys fired both Limegrover and their "passing game coordinator".

It's also a good time to be looking for a coach, as the AFCA annual convention is this week in San Antonio. Apparently Franklin and Limegrover had their first interview down in Texas earlier this week, then met with the whole offensive staff yesterday and today.

Per this article:

Claeys, who was Minnesota's defensive coordinator until he succeeded Kill on Oct. 28, parted ways with Limegrover, a colleague since 1999, and Zebrowski, who he has been with since 2010.

"Matt and Jim are both terrific people and coaches, but I have decided to make a change that will better fit my offensive philosophy, which is to have one coordinator calling the plays," Claeys said in a statement.

Claeys made the announcement during a team meeting Sunday night, a day after the Gophers wrapped up a 5-7 regular season with a 31-21 loss to Wisconsin at TCF Bank Stadium.
Seems to be to be a difference of direction / philosophy on offense that the new head coach wanted.
